GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1402 Textbook: Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, by Fall, 2016 Kotz and Treichel, Ninth Edition Section: 20 9:25 10:40, TR FH102 CRN: 62565 Instructor: Dr. Robert E. Belford Office: SCLB 277 Office Hours: T/R 10:40-11:30 Email @ualr.edu ph. (501)569-8824 http://www.ualr.edu/rebelford/chem1402/chem1402.htm CHEM 1402 General Chemistry I Prerequisite: MATH 1302 or higher level class, with a grade of C or greater. Students must also attain the minimum score on a placement examination to qualify for enrollment in CHEM 1402. Students who do not attain the minimum score may enroll in CHEM 1300. Finishing CHEM 1300 does not substitute for meeting the minimum score on the placement examination. The class builds upon a knowledge foundation in chemistry and offers inquiry into topics of scientific measurement, chemical nomenclature, expressing qualitative and quantitative statements about chemical reactions, qualitative atomic theory, electronic and molecular structure models, chemical periodicity, thermo-chemistry, gases, kinetic molecular theory, and nuclear chemistry. The class is designed for chemistry majors and others needing rigorous instruction. It meets ACTS criteria. This course requires 45 hours of lecture and 45 hours of laboratory per semester. Four credit hours. (ACTS Course Number CHEM 1414) CHEM 1402 fulfills four hours of the general education core laboratory science course requirement. Course Objectives and Goals Upon completion of this course you will be able to: 1 Identify key concepts and principles in chemistry such as bonding, structure, reactions and thermodynamics Employ observational and experimental methods to insure safe handling of chemicals Identify examples of the limitations of science and correctly use units of measure. Lecture Exams and Quizzes 2 During this semester exams and quizzes will be given. They will be based on classroom lectures, readings and homework assignments. Graded quizzes will be announced and unannounced and contribute to the total lecture score. Attendance quizzes will just be recorded for attendance, and the student must print their name on these quizzes in a legible manner or they will be considered absent. Grading of course 3 exams + Quizzes 500 points Grading- based on percentage Attendance Quizzes 50 90-100 A Laboratory (2.5 x av) 250 80-89 B Comprehensive Final Exam 200 70-79 C 1000 pts 60-69 D Below 60 F

Required Materials The textbook, lab manual and safety glasses are required for the course. Use of a NONprogrammable scientific calculator with the EE or EXP and LOG functions is required. Use of programmable calculators will NOT be allowed on quizzes or exams. WebSite There are interactive quizzes, old lecture notes and review material on the course website. http://www.ualr.edu/rebelford/chem1402/chem1402.htm This semester I am developing material for this class on the LibreTexts site (formerly ChemWiki), but the material is currently incomplete. We have mapped the table of contents with content from other sites, and sections with an asterick have http://chem.libretexts.org/libretexts/university_of_arkansas_little_rock/chem_1402%3a_general_ch emistry_1 Makeup Policy The final exam score (converted to 100 points) will be substituted for the lowest hourly exam, there are no make-up exams or quizzes. Attendance Policy Your success in this course will require regular attendance and completion of assignments and exams. MISSING MORE THAN THREE LAB SESSIONS WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE FOUR HOUR LECTURE/LAB COURSE. Laboratory Quizzes and Reports 3 The laboratory is central to the study of chemistry and counts as one-fourth of the credit hour and one-fourth of the grade. All experiments will be conducted individually. The lab average will be determined from pre-lab quizzes, lab reports and lab quizzes. Plagiarism Test 4 Students must take responsibility for completing assignments in an ethical manner. To facilitate students in this endeavor, students are required to complete the on-line, mastery-based Indiana Univeristy Plagiarism Test that can be found: athttps://www.indiana.edu/~academy/firstprinciples/certificationtests/index.html. The completion certificate must be submitted to the lecture instructor by August 30 and is worth 10 quiz pts. Students who do not complete this test prior to the end of the semester will receive an incomplete grade for the class, which will default to an F. Lab Safety Case Study 5 Students must develop an understanding of ethical issues involving laboratory safety. In order to demonstrate this understanding and skill, students will be presented a case study that requires decision-making about the environmental impact of a compound.

Students with Disabilities Your success in this class is important to me, and it is the policy and practice of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to create inclusive learning environments consistent with federal and state law. If you have a documented disability (or need to have a disability documented), and need an accommodation, please contact me privately as soon as possible, so that we can discuss with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) how to meet your specific needs and the requirements of the course. The DRC offers resources and coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Reasonable accommodations are established through an interactive process among you, your instructor(s) and the DRC. Thus, if you have a disability, please contact me and/or the DRC, at 501.569.3143 (V/TTY) or 501.683.7629 (VP). For more information, please visit the DRC website.
