4 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Grade level 9-12 th Why Take this course 1. We only have 1 planet. 2. Humans are dependent on the health of the planet for their health. 3. Learn the science and facts about natural disasters, natural resources, ecology, sustainability, agriculture, population growth, the global climate and more. 4. Discuss with classmates our use of natural resources. Get insight in how decisions that effect our environment are made. 5. Be aware of current events at home and around the world that impact environmental health.

5 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Expectations and outcomes Become aware of environmental science and the relationships between man and all the plants, animals and natural resources on Earth Academic expectations: Be an active participant. Most work will be done in class Not intended to prepare you for more rigorous science but, to supply you necessary scientific insights to be a good citizen.

6 Chemistry I Who should take Chemistry I? Grade level th Content This course is designed for students who might be going to college but not necessarily majoring in math or science. Scientific measurement, states of matter, matter and change, atomic structure, the periodic table, ionic and covalent bonding, chemical naming of pure substances, writing formulas, chemical reactions and stoichiometry.

7 Chemistry I Academic expectations. This is a challenging course designed to prepare you for the chemistry concepts found on the state assessment. It will also prepare you for introductory science courses in college. There will be homework most nights. Student is expected to be able to rearrange algebra expressions. Some memorization required.

8 Honors Chemistry I Grade level th Who should take Honors Chemistry? Students planning on College with a major in a science, math, engineering, medicine, pharmacy. Content Structure of matter, energy, atoms, molecules compounds, reactions and the mathematics of chemical amounts

9 Honors Chemistry I Academic expectations. This is a rigorous course designed to prepare you for more chemistry in high school and college. Homework every night Considerable memorization required. Student is expected to be able to rearrange algebra expressions. Example: solve the following equation for, λ C λ = ν λ=wavelength ν=frequency c=speed of light

10 HONORS CHEMISTRY II Who should take this class? Students whose college major requires university chemistry. At FHSU this is Chem College majors include: Pre-Med, Pharmacy, Biology, Geology, Physics, Chemistry, preengineering, Science Teacher Pre-requisite: Chemistry I or Honors Chemistry I Content covered: thermodynamics, ph, oxidationreduction and electro-chemistry, organic nomenclature.

11 Honors Chemistry II Academic expectations: More problem based than Chemistry I Not as much memory work There is more emphasis for the student to be an independent learner. The approach is to prepare the student for college chemistry work and expectations

12 Biology Grade level 10 th Required Core Class Academic expectations General college prep course that requires regular study. More guided practice with more lecture and fewer labs are provided to students than Honors Biology Content: Emphasis on molecular level of biology Biology in the 21 st Century Chemistry of Life Cell Structure and Function Cells and Energy Cell Growth and Division Meiosis and Mendel Extending Mendelian Genetics

Content Plants: trees, grasses, wildflowers Animals: insects, birds, mammals, reptiles, turtles, & amphibians, fish Students will collect plant leaves and flowers Students will prepare study sheets for plant specimens Students will follow protocols to collect data to submit to data bases Students will identify plants and animals found in western Kansas
