Sample Lesson 9: Geometry Grade-Level Band 3 5 Discussion of the Mathematics In this lesson, students will use virtual geoboards to create polygons. The virtual geoboard will compute the area and perimeter of the shapes. Students will learn that different shapes can have the same area or perimeter. Students should have experience computing perimeter and area of plane figures using graph paper, concrete manipulatives, and real world objects prior to this lesson. NCTM Standards Geometry Build and draw geometric objects Use geometric models to solve problems in other areas of mathematics, such as number and measurement Measurement Understand such attributes as length and area and select the appropriate type of unit for measuring each attribute Explore what happens to measurements of a two-dimensional shape such as its perimeter and area when the shape is changed in some way 108

Click on the intersection of Grade Band 3 5 and Geometry. Click on Geoboard. Explain to students that the space between two pegs on a geoboard is one unit. Model how to connect a virtual rubber band between two pegs. Illustrate how to draw the line on geodot paper. Tell students that a square that measures one unit on each side is a square unit. Model how to form a square unit on the virtual geoboard using one rubber band. Click on Measures to show the area and perimeter of the shape. 109

Teacher Tip A shape must be formed by one rubber band for the computer to calculate its dimensions. Model how to draw the square on geodot paper. Hand out the activity sheet to each student, and point out the information that you just discussed in the Getting Started section. Do the Explore section of the activity sheet with the students. Using an LCD projector, call on students to create each of the polygons for the class. Be sure the area and perimeter measures are hidden. Have students give the area and perimeter of each shape that is created and explain their strategies for finding them. Students Work Independently Have students work independently to complete the You Do the Math section of the activity sheet. Guide students to the virtual geoboards website. Give students a few minutes to explore the virtual geoboard, and then have students complete the activities on the activity sheet. Students should record the polygons they create on geodot paper. Follow-Up Discussion Once students have completed the activity sheet, select several students to share their responses on large dot paper. Display student responses for each problem separately so the class can see multiple solutions to the problems. Use the following questions to lead a discussion. Which shapes did you create that had a perimeter of 16 units? What strategies did you use to keep the areas the same while changing the perimeters (problems b, c, and d)? Compare the polygons for problems b, c, and d. What do you notice about the shapes as the perimeters get smaller? (The more compact the polygon is, the fewer sides there are to walk around. ) Student Assessment Can the student create a shape with the given dimensions? Does the student have strategies for changing the perimeter of a shape while the area remains constant? Does the student have strategies for changing the area of a shape while the perimeter remains constant? Can the student explain what area means? What to Expect from Students Many students will use a guess-and-check strategy to solve the problems. This is acceptable and still allows children to see that different shapes can have the same area or perimeter. In discussion, encourage students to explain why different shapes have equal or unequal dimensions. Constructing triangles will present a problem for the students. It is not an indication of failure if students do not solve these problem types. Rather, the triangle problems are included to challenge the thinking of advanced students. Extensions and Connections Ask students to respond to one or more of the following journal prompts: 1. Can you increase the perimeter of a polygon without increasing its area? Why or why not? Yes, because you can join each square unit to the others so that only one of its sides is hidden (not part of the perimeter). 2. I have 6 square tables in my classroom. Only one student can sit at each side of a table. If at least one side of each table must be touching one side of another table, how can I arrange the tables to seat the most students? 3. Given area = 8 square units, find the polygon with the greatest perimeter. How do you know this polygon has the greatest perimeter? A stretched rectangle with length (or width) of 1 unit. 4. How can you find the area of a triangle? A triangle is one-half of a rectangle with the same length and width. 111
