Personal Data, «oil» and poison of the Digital Economy Global Consumer Pulse - 2013
Another track is being explored
MesInfos project What might happen if the organisations that hold personal data shared it willingly with the individuals concerned?
For what purpose?
What benefits can be expected? For the customers Convenience, control, projection and empowerment (the opportunity to make ones own choices) Getting out of a negative value situation, where they have neither knowledge nor control over their data Focus on data use value rather than market value For the organizations Trust and a renewed sense of customer relations Better quality data A better understanding of what customers really want An opportunity to imagine new services
2013-2014 The : Towards MesInfos the Project MesInfos Experiment Gather a core group of companies and organizations in order to explore the value that individuals could derive from being empowered with their own data. Try to align the interests of individuals / organizations / society (data protection) Creatively explore possible new services Experiment w/real users and real data from several universes Work on small and large issues almost at the same time
2013-2014 : The MesInfos Experiment 200+ real customers 7+ real companies handing back real data Banks: Banque Postale, Credit Cooperatif, Société Générale [Account data] Retailers: Les Mousquetaires/Intermarché [Puchase data] Insurance: Axa [Car/Home insurance contracts and related data] Telecom/Internet: Orange [Phone use, Geolocation, IPTV] Google [Takeout] Hopes: Energy, Mobility One platform to host them all Cozycloud/Privowny [Adds Privowny data: navigation, forms ] - Personal Cloud Mobilizing the digital ecosystem to prototype applications The data holders themselves Innovative entrepreneurs, developers, designers, schools and universities The Quantified Self community Analyzing user returns with researchers
Cozy Cloud : the platform
More than 50 concepts of new services
Amazingly rich potential for new services Initial Lessons Learned Corporate I.T. is NOT ready For consumers, "Personal Data" is an abstract concept. For startups, need real-life market perspectives Animation and community management are essential in this kind of experiment
What we learned from the individuals (1/2) A deep awareness that their personal data is collected and used out of their own control «Les entreprises récupèrent plein de données, aujourd hui il n y a peut-être pas trop de trucs malfaisants mais je ne sais pas trop dans un avenir proche, s il n y aura pas des possibilités de profiler les gens sur certains critères.» Testers declare to be interested in a device that would enable them to regain control and to use their data no impact on the ground People don t really use tools to protect themselves or to use the data. An abstract concept + no idea of what to do with their data.
What we learned from the individuals (2/2) The path towards data go through uses and services Make life a bit easier: automatisation, organization, alerts, advices Coaching and "self coaching" (ex. health) Linking with other individuals or organisations Discount vouchers The «individual» is not the only one concerned Family, roomates (which make things more complicated) Most of the uses will be social : comparison, sharing Individuals «Self Efficacy» and data sharing with the organizations A significant impact of the sharing of personal data over trust
What we learned from the data holders : nothing ready to share data with clients A transverse project for the organization : IS, business, marketing, legal... Data has to be described and explained to be useful No example of living secured system to transfer data to the clients The Big question : finding the clients within the IS IS are not conceived to share data «Family», «husband and wife» is often an information missing A few needs on the developers and services providers side Data frequency, latency, history Standardisation and interoperability Enable them to connect with other types of data (open data, etc.)
What we learned from the innovators A new innovation continent is opening Many concepts from the experiment but more to be explored (relationship organization/client, ) The value of data crossings The value of «social» services : comparison, sharing, contribution Mental and technical barriers Hard to to process personal data for the person concerned Hard to cross datasets Consequence : simple prototypes, crossing few data A long-term market The challenge of the interaction between the organizations IS (ex : VRM) and users Entrepreneurs need short-term cycles Disruptive business models still have to be invented
BIG Questions Ahead
When We Did What May-Oct '13 Nov-May 2014 Q2, 2014 Build Panel Build Platform Extract Data Real-life experimentation 4th party design, prototyping and test Apps contest Observation Lessons Learned Outreach Follow-up 2015 Mid/long term issues Projects Animation Beyond the experimentation itself: Collaboration with the international community Working on mid/long term issues: User-related Legal Technical Economic
2014-2015 Towards an autonomous innovation dynamic around Self Data Exploring the Self Data potential, by inventing apps and business models Leading or assisting other experiments to get more users feedbacks Helping stakeholders to adress big challenges (legal, economic, technical, ) Federate and animate the ecosystem, stimulate collaboration and collective projects Putting Self Data subject on the agenda
