The basic element for operationalization of Geohraphical Indications in Mozambique is legislation. The Industrial Property Code in force provides some provisions on GIs but they are not sufficient. Therefore, detailed regulations on registration and protection are needed. Once, the legislation is in force new interventions will be put in place in order to allow use of GIs in the country Drafting regulations in GI sis the basic element of the whole project. Geographical Indications are part of the strategic management activities of the business people and local communities in their efforts to add value to their products based on theis unique characteristics.. Our partner organisation, UTPPRON, is also engaged in a program called Made in Mozambique which is concerned in the enhacement of local products and services. The local associations of producers will benefit a lot from the use of Gis in terms of increased value, price and access to new markets. Page 2 of 7

Drafting regulation models for each Geographical Indication identified. Mapping out potential GIs in the country Dissemination activities on Geographical Indications. PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED : Problèmes à résoudre What is the specific problem which requires solution? Lack of regulations on GIs that will enable the business community its use in order to add value to their products. PURPOSE OF ACTIVITY: But de la proposition Who are the beneficiaries and how will they benefit? How will the results of the activity solve the problem(s)? The first beneficiary will be the whole legal system as will finally have regulations on this important intellectual property right The country in itself will map out all the potential GIs in the country, specific regulations on each GI identified will be provided. Local producers and local communities will have at their disposal legal instruments to add value and protect their products. The IP office will benefit from detailed regulation on procedures to facilitate registration and protection of GIs. Page 4 of 7
