JOINT MEDIA RELEASE PHOTO RELEASE: TERTIARY STUDENTS SPARK OFF IDEAS FOR GREEN COMMUNITY SPACE ATOP CITY SQUARE MALL Singapore Polytechnic team wins top prize in BCA-CDL Green Sparks Competition 2015 /16 21 team submissions received from seven local tertiary institutions Revamped Green Mark scheme as judging criteria a first for this competition series Singapore, 9 April 2016 A team of five students from Singapore Polytechnic emerged champions at the finals of BCA-CDL Green Sparks Competition 2015/16 held on Friday, 8 April 2016 at BCA Academy. Coming in second and third positions were another team from Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic respectively. Jointly organised by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and City Developments Limited (CDL), this year s BCA-CDL Green Sparks Competition challenged participants to conceptualise a sustainable community space for City Square Mall s existing Sky Park at Level 6. 1

Guest-Of-Honour Mr Lee Fook Sun, Chairman of BCA (third from left); Dr John Keung, CEO of BCA(fourth from left); and Ms Esther An, Chief Sustainability Officer of CDL (fourth from right) presented the top prize to the winning team, 05-ARCHI from Singapore Polytechnic. 2

The winning team s Stack d up @ City Square Mall stood out from the entries of the eight finalists with their compelling design that converts the space into an energyefficient, multi-functional facility for family and community bonding activities. The design leverages the existing infrastructure and capitalises on the vantage views of the site. It also incorporates the use of recycled shipping containers into a modular and stacked building system. AUSIEtecture, another team from Singapore Polytechnic won the 2 nd prize for their fusion 2 design, which uses a passive design approach that facilitates natural ventilation through the strategic orientations of their building structure based on the wind directions of the space. A total of 21 teams submitted their concept paper entries earlier in January this year. Teams were judged based on the amount of energy savings, environmental benefits, feasibility, creativity and aesthetic appeal of the design. Teams also had to elaborate how their design features tie in with the components of the new Green Mark 2015 scheme a key judging criteria in this year s competition. Participants hailed from seven local tertiary institutions including Nanyang Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Institute of Technology, as well as Singapore University of Technology and Design - up from five participating institutions in the previous seasons. 3

Eight finalist teams were shortlisted to pitch their design concepts in a booth presentation style to a panel of industry experts. The panel was led by the chief judge Er. Ng Eng Kiong (third from right), Immediate Past President of Singapore Green Building Council. Held for the third time, the BCA-CDL Green Sparks Competition is a biennial national green built environment competition and public-private initiative by BCA and CDL to engage and nurture local tertiary students effort to green Singapore s built environment and to raise awareness of the best green building practices and solutions amongst future practitioners. Launched in 2010, the first BCA-CDL Green Sparks Competition called for participants to submit concept proposals to retrofit Fuji Xerox Towers into an exemplary BCA Green Mark Platinum building, while the second edition saw the conceptualisation of a new generation green show suite for a CDL residential development site. NUS teams were the champions in the first two competitions. Issued by the Building and Construction Authority and City Developments Limited on 9 April 2016 4
