Master of Economics Program for Developing Countries 2016-2018 Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) Part I. About the Program Program Objectives The Master of Economics Program is a two-year English degree program offered by Central University of Finance and Economics. It is designed for government officials as well as the experienced professionals from developing countries and focuses on enhancing cooperation and exchanges between those countries and China. Students are expected to complete the program full time over 2 years. The program aims to - promote students to acquire advanced knowledge of economic theories, gain a better understanding of China s development practices and the current development of this subject. - help students to learn the modern economic theory systematically and therefore to understand more about how to apply sophisticated techniques in analyzing real world issues. - provide students with an opportunity to study China s economic institutions and development from an international perspective and build skills necessary for problem-solving in a globally connected economy. Program Mode / Structure Instruction: 1
The medium of instruction is English. Classes will incorporate a mix of lectures, seminars, case discussions, tutorials, presentations and so on. Upon application, students could also choose some courses taught in Chinese. Program duration Students are expected to complete the program in two years from Sept. 2016 to Jun. 2018. For confirmed date, please refer to the admission letter. Students are required to finish the full time course-work, thesis writing and thesis defense by the end of the academic years. If there are fewer than 8 students, a course will not be delivered. Master Thesis Students are expected to bring specific research questions concerning theoretical coverage and economic analyses to the program, as a part of thesis research preparation. Towards the end of the first semester, a number of faculty members from the school will be invited as potential thesis supervisors, and the school will make arrangement for students to choose their supervisors. The thesis is expected to combine theoretical perspectives, analytical skills and practical experiences of economic issues, and aiming at solving practical problems. Students must pass oral exam for the thesis. Degree Requirements Students are required to successfully complete 30 credit-worth course work and a master thesis and thesis defense within the required time period. After meeting the above requirements and with the approval of University Degree Committee, the master degree of Economics will be awarded. 3
Part II. Application and Admissions Application Prerequisites All applicants must meet the following entrance requirements: 1. Applicants must be non-chinese citizens with a valid passport, abide by laws, decrees and rules, regulations of People s Republic of China and Central University of Finance and Economics; 2. Applicants must have attained a Bachelor s degree or above, with a higher level of English and working experience of three years, under the age of 45, and also meet the professional requirements of the university which applicants applied for; 3. Applicants who are not native English speakers or whose undergraduate education was not in English are required to take an appropriate English Language Proficiency Test and in general achieve a sufficient score, such as: TOEFL 627 or better (Paper Based Test) TOEFL 263 or better in CBT (with at least 5.0 in TWE). TOEFL - ibt 107 or better IELTS 6.5 or better ( with at least 6.5 in Writing) A GRE score is desirable but not required. 4. The candidates must be healthy and must not have any disease or situation listed below: a) Diseases prohibited by Chinese Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Laws and Regulations b) Other severe chronic diseases like high blood pressure, cardio-cerebrovascular disease, diabetes; psychological diseases; or other infectious diseases which may harm public health c) In recovery period after major surgery or acute disease attacks d) Severe physically challenged e) Pregnancy 5. Applicants are not allowed to bring spouse or any relative and friend during the study in China; 4
6. Only applicants recommended by the Embassy of the People s Republic of China will be considered and admitted. How to Apply STEP 1: Recommendation & Fill the Application Form Acquire recommendation from your current organization to the Economic and Commercial Counsellor s Office, Embassy of the People s Republic of China in your own country and get approved. Please fill the Application Form firstly, and then print the complete form out and sign your name and the date on it. STEP 2: Application Materials Submission Applicants are required to submit the application materials listed below to the Economic and Commercial Counsellor s Office of the Chinese Embassy in your own country as well as send the electrify copies to CUFE via email (chinaaid@cufe.edu.cn) or fax (0086-010-62288834). Note: After being accepted, applicants are required to bring the hard copies of all application materials (include all physical examination results) to Training School, Central University of Finance and Economics when they make registration. STEP 3: Online Application After being surely accepted, Applicants are required to visit online application system of Chinese Scholarship Council at http://laihua.csc.edu.cn/. Select the program named MOFCOM (Chinese Government) Scholarship and finish online application. The Agency No. of Central University of Finance and Economics is 10034. Note: Only if you finish this online application, can you finally receive the formal Admission Notification from Central University of Finance and Economics. Application Materials Applicants are required to prepare an application package. Please read the following part carefully to prepare the application materials. Admission The eligibility of all the applicants will be assessed according to the requirements by the Training School, Central University of Finance and Economics.
