Keramix Interior Waterproofing Kit Product and Application Guide
Walls 1. Moisten walls with water using a brush before levelling. 2. If needed, smooth the surface with Kiilto OT Light, TM DF, TT, SR DF or SK Märkätilatasoite. 3. Prime dry and dust free wall with Kiilto Keraprimer (diluted with water 1:1). 4. Prepare Kiilto Keramix in 1:1 (proportioning by weight). Install Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha or TPE-nauha in corners, joints, junctures of different materials and screw heads. Alternatively you can use Kiilto Butyylinauha. Bed reinforcement tape into wet waterproofing membrane and apply a second layer over the tape to ensure proper wetting. 5. Reinforce pipe inlets with pre-fabricated reinforcements or cut off a piece from Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha. 6. Roll Keramix waterproofing to the entire wall area and allow to dry for minimum 1 hour. Note the colour change. 7. Roll a second layer of Keramix and allow to dry for minimum 2 hours (colour change) prior to tiling. Total consumption of Keramix must be 1.5 kg/m² minimum and layer thickness 0.7 mm minimum. 8. Remember to nail support timbers before tiling. 9. Start tiling from the second row of tiles and fix tiles with e.g. Kiilto Superfix DF, Kiilto Saneerauslaasti or Kiilto Kerapid Pikasaneerauslaasti. FLOORS 1. Use Kiilto 60 Pikalattiamassa for casting the floor. Use steel reinforcement. Under floor heating cables can be fixed to the steel reinforcement. 2. Concrete substrate is primed with Kiilto Start Primer (diluted with water 1:4) prior to smoothing. 3. For slopes and installing heating cables in wet areas you can also use Kiilto Lattialämmitystasoite DF or MultiPlan DF. Read separate instructions on smoothing and priming.
4. Prime dry and dust free floor with Kiilto Keraprimer (diluted with water 1:1). 5. Apply Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha or TPEnauha in corners, joints, junctions of different materials as well as screw heads. Alternatively you can use Kiilto Butyylinauha. Bed reinforcement tape into wet Keramix and apply a second layer of Keramix over the tape to ensure proper wetting. 6. Floor drain is waterproofed with selfadherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa. Place Kiilto Kaivolaippa on dry, primed floor surface and press firmly in position. Cut off a hole in it as per floor drain manufacturer s instructions and press the tension ring firmly in position. 7. Apply Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha on the edges of Kiilto Kaivolaippa without reinforcement and brush Keramix over the tape and around the tension ring. 8. Seal the junction between the tension ring and the floor drain with KiiltoFix Masa. Kiilto Kaivolaippa s compatibility with most floor drains types is tested and approved. 9. Roll Keramix waterproofing membrane over the entire floor area and let dry min. 1 h. Note the colour change. 10. Roll a second layer of Keramix and allow to dry min. 2 h (colour change) before tiling. The total consumption of Keramix should be for minimum 1.5 kg/m 2 and layer thickness for minimum 0.7 mm. 11. Let dry and start tiling the floor. Fix tiles with Kiilto Superfix DF, Kiilto Saneerauslaasti, Kiilto HighFlex S2 or Kiilto Kerapid Pikasaneerauslaasti. 12. After the floor tiling has dried, you can fix the lowest wall tile row and start jointing. 13. Start jointing from walls. Apply Kiilto Saumalaasti with a rubber trowel and press it in the joints. Wait for 15-30 minutes and wash away excessive grout with a damp sponge. 14. Use a well-wrung, damp sponge, since too much water may discolour the joints. Wall joints profile can be finished with a thick electric wire. 15. Wipe away any excess grout from corners and seam them as well as pipeline inlets with Kiilto Saniteettisilikoni. Let cure until the next day before using the new bathroom. Keep the underfloor heating system turned off at least 7 days. Bring the system up to its operation temperature gradually in stages over a few days.
Area of application Kiilto Keramix is an under tile waterproofing system for walls and floors in wet areas when using ceramic tiles. It is not recommended for areas constantly under water, such as swimming pools. Keramix is suitable also for outdoor use, e.g. balconies and seasonally unheated spaces. In balconies and other corresponding outdoor applications we do not recommend using primer and all corners, joints and junctions of different materials must be reinforced with Kiilto Butyylinauha. Read separate instructions for waterproofing outdoor applications. Mixed Keramix must be used within approx. 45-60 minutes. Compatible with Kiilto Kerafiber system, e.g. you can use Kiilto Kerafiber for walls and Keramix for floors. Substrate Suitable substrates are concrete, mansonries, cement-based levelling screed or construction board. Ensure that the boards are suitable for wet room use. Ground supported floors must have a barrier layer to prevent the rising damp. The surface must be dry, solid, dust free and even. All impurities that might impair adhesion must be carefully removed. Uneven floors are sanded and/ or smoothed with cement based Kiilto smoothing compound. When renovating floors with underfloor heating, we recommend Kiilto Lattialämmitystasoite over cables and for building falls. Underfloor heating system is installed under the waterproofing as per manufacturer s instructions. Prepare the surface prior to levelling according to separate instructions. Make sure that the construction is suitable for waterproofing and tiling. Reinforcing Corners, pipe inlets, screw heads, junctions and seams of different bases and background materials are reinforced and sealed with Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha. Alternatively you can use Kiilto Butyylinauha. Nurkkavahvikenauha (10 cm and 20 cm) is always bedded into wet Keramix. Apply Keramix over the reinforcements immediately to ensure thorough wetting. In wall-floor junctions the tape is lifted 5 cm up on the wall. For internal and external corners you can use pre-fabricated corner pieces. See that the reinforcements lap each other at least 30 mm. Floor drain is reinforced with the self-adherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa. The compatibility of Kiilto Kaivolaippa with Vieser, Jafo, Merika and Saint- Gobain Aquasafe floor drains has been tested. Tools Power drill with an automatic whisk, roller, brush, plastic trowel and trimming knife. Tools and fresh stains are washed with water. Dry stains can be removed only mechanically. Working conditions Humidity of concrete: new concrete constructions < 90% RH, old concrete constructions < 95% RH. The room and surface temperature must be +10-25 C. Conditions should be stable (no humidity and temperature variations) during the work to avoid dimension alterations in materials. Underfloor heating is turned off 2 days before the work starts. Keep the system turned off for approx. 7 days. Bring the system up to its operation temperature gradually in stages over a few days. Drying of Keramix can be accelerated by efficient ventilation. Keramix consumption Walls and floors need two layers of Keramix at the minimum: 2 x 0.75 kg/m² = thickness of dry Keramix coat 0.7 mm; 10 kg + 10 l = approx. 13 m² and 5 kg + 5 l = approx. 6.5 m². Remove the cement skin and other impurities that might impair the adhesion. Surface must be clean and dustless before applying the primer. Priming floors Kiilto Start Primer: Water-based primer to improve adhesion between the levelling compound and the substrate. M1. Castings, floors Levelling and smoothing floors Kiilto 60: Cement-based, fast setting and drying floor screed for castings and fillings of floors and construction of slopes. M1. Kiilto 70: Cement-based fast setting and drying floor screed for castings and fillings of floors and also for construction of slopes. Also for outdoor use. M1. Kiilto Lattialämmitystasoite DF: Dust reduced, cementbased levelling compound containing reinforcing fibres and flexibility and adhesion improving additives for floors with underfloor heating. Suitable for warm water tubing or electric cables. M1. Kiilto MultiPlan DF: Dust reduced, cement-based, fibre reinforced levelling compound with good levelling properties for floors with underfloor heating. Suitable for warm water tubing or electric cables. M1. Kiilto 97: Cement-based, fine smoothing compound for floors prior to laying a floor covering. M1. Priming the surface prior to waterproofing Kiilto Keraprimer: Water-based primer for concrete, boards and levelling compound surfaces (approved for wet room use) prior to applying Kiilto waterproofing membranes.
