Wireless USB Dongle Drivers Installation Guide Introduction This document guides the user through the process of installing the USB Device Drivers for either the RF (Radio Frequency) or Bluetooth communications devices or dongles that can be used with the bebalance+ software. The driver files used in this guide can be found in the root directory of the installation CD or on the Steeper Group website (www.rslsteeper.com/downloads). Figure 1 bebalance+ The following wireless devices can be used to interface to the bebalance+ software, the latest bebalance+ version is v1.2. The Bluetooth USB Dongle is the latest addition and provides IP based communications. Bluetooth USB Dongle - BLE121LR Red RF USB Dongle AMB2561 Black RF USB Dongle AMB2560 Page 3
Bluetooth USB Dongle - BLE121LR This device is a long range Bluetooth device that creates a virtual comport driver that the software can use to communicate with the bebionic hand (Small only). This Bluetooth device is more powerful than its predecessor allowing for more stable connections over a greater distance. This device was designed by Steeper to overcome the limitations of the other RF devices. Driver Files: Steeper bebalance+ Figure 2 Bluetooth USB Dongle (BLE121LR) Red RF USB Dongle AMB2561 This device is an older device that communicates on a single frequency band and therefore can interfere with other devices that use the similar frequencies. When reading and writing to the bebionic devices only a single device must be powered to avoid communications conflicts. Driver Files: Steeper bebalance+ (new) Standard FTDI Figure 3 Red RF USB Dongle (AMB2561) Black RF USB Dongle AMB2560 This device is even older than the red RF device and has since become obsolete. However we include the guide and drivers for this device as there are still many customers who use this. Driver Files: CP210xVCP Figure 4 Black RF USB Dongle (AMB2560) Page 4
Driver s & Windows Device Manager Tool Each of the USB Dongles listed above creates a virtual comport that the bebalance+ software connects to in order to read and write data to and from the bebionic hands. Before it can communicate, the correct driver files need to be installed so the operating system can communicate with each device. When new hardware/devices are plugged into a computer the operating system should automatically select the best driver to match but sometimes this does not happen. In this instance the driver will need to be installed manually. Below is the Windows Device Manager tool which shows all connected hardware/devices. Below we can see that there are a number of communications devices listed under Ports (COM & LPT). We are only interested here in the Steeper compatible devices (circled in black, amber and red below). You can access the Windows Device Manager through the control panel on the Windows start menu. There are tutorials on the internet for the Operating System being used. A quick Google search will find these easily enough. Figure 5 Windows Device Manager Tool Page 5
Automatic Driver Installation RF USB Dongles When an operating system detects new hardware it usually tries to automatically find and install the device drivers itself depending on the operating system in question. When this fails it is up to the user to install them manually. The following procedure shows what happens when device drivers are installed automatically. The user doesn t have to do anything except insert the device. Figure 6 Red RF USB Dongles (AMB2561) Inserting a Red RF USB Dongle 1) Insert the Red RF USB Dongle into any USB Port. There will/should be an audible and visual notification of a device that has been attached to the system as shown below in figure 7. Here Windows will try to install the drivers automatically. It may take a few minutes for the driver files to be found and installed. It may appear that nothing is happening however if you look at the notification icons in the bottom right corner you will see that one is animating, this indicates that it is still working on finding and installing the driver files. Figure 7 Installing Red RF USB Dongle Drivers (AMB2561) 2) If the device drivers for the red USB Dongle have been installed successfully then another notification will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen informing of the successful installation as shown below in figure 8. The device should now be visible in the Windows Device Manager Tool and in the bebalance+ software. Figure 8 Red RF Dongle Drivers installed successfully The notifications above, figures 7 & 8, show images from the Windows 7 operating system and may appear differently on other operating systems. Page 6
The installation of the Black RF USB Dongle is the same as the Red Dongle except the device name is obviously different. Again follow the procedure below for automatic driver installation. Figure 9 Black RF USB Dongle (AMB2560) Inserting a Black RF USB Dongle 1) Insert the Black RF USB Dongle into any USB Port. There will/should be an audible and visual notification of a device that has been attached to the system as shown below in figure 10. Here Windows will try to install the drivers automatically. It may take a few minutes for the driver files to be found and installed. It may appear that nothing is happening however if you look at the notification icons in the bottom right corner you will see that one is animating, this indicates that it is still working on finding and installing the driver files.
