This includes two full-time coaches, three team chiropractors, two medical trainers, a three-person broadcast team, and a number of Sales, Marketing, and Game Night Operations staff. Head Coach Mark Coletta (right) played four seasons with Plattsburgh State in New York, winning a national title before playing pro hockey in Italy as well as in the CHL in Texas. His coaching record in six seasons with SFU is 102-20-9-5. Assistant Coach Jim Camazzola (left) was an NHL draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks and played in the AHL and NHL before spending a number of seasons playing pro hockey overseas. Camazzola was also named to both the 1992 and 1994 Italian Olympic Hockey Teams. ABOUT THE BCIHL In 2006, SFU joined Trinity Western University, UVIC, UNBC, and UCFV in the formation of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL). The BCIHL has continued to grow by adding new members such as Eastern Washington University, Thompson Rivers University, Okanagan College, and Selkirk College over the years. Each year, the BCIHL playoffs decide a league champion with each round consisting of a three-game playoff series. SFU and UVIC share the lead in league championships with three apiece.
EXHIBITION SCHEDULE SFU Men s Hockey is well known as a leading program in initiating new and exciting exhibition opportunities to showcase top-level University Hockey in Canada and the United States. Over the years, SFU has competed against non-bcihl teams such as the UBC Thunderbirds (CIS), Augustana University (ACAC), Portage College (ACAC), Arizona State University Sun Devils (ACHA D1), Oklahoma University Sooners (ACHA D1), and the BCHL s Coquitlam Express and Merritt Centennials. With the quick growth of the organization, SFU Hockey would again raise the level of competition in 2012. For the first time, SFU would compete against an NCAA Division 1 program in Air Force. While SFU would fall to Air Force by a score of 8-3, it opened the door to NCAA Division 1 competition in Burnaby and would put SFU on the map among the best college teams in North America. In 2013 SFU flew to Boston to compete against NCAA Division 1 opponents Sacred Heart University and College of the Holy Cross. SFU would also host Princeton University, and #4 ranked University of North Dakota later that season. THE UNIVERSITY HOCKEY CLASSIC Each September, SFU Hockey meets UBC in the annual University Hockey Classic pre-season exhibition matchup. The event takes aim at building on the historic cross-town rivalry between the two schools, a rivarly that extends from hockey into other sports such as football and even academic programs. The University Hockey Classic began in 2011 with over 1600 passionate fans on hand to witness the SFU team defeat UBC in a two-game series.
THE GREAT NORTHWEST SHOWCASE In December of 2012, SFU Hockey established the Great Northwest Showcase, an annual event hosted in Burnaby to showcase top-level college hockey while promoting education as an important part of an athlete s career. Last year s showcase would see the Princeton University Tigers and NCAA powerhouse University of North Dakota face off against SFU and UBC at Copeland Arena. The exciting event featured over 15 NHL draft picks, saw UBC defeat both NCAA rivals, and saw SFU fall 4-3 to UND in an exciting headline game. Three months later, #4 ranked UND would go on to make the NCAA Frozen Four. The teams competing in the 2015 event are yet to be announced, but whoever they are it is sure to be a special event for SFU Hockey and the City of Burnaby. In one of the defining moments of Graeme Gordon s University Hockey Career, the SFU netminder stops Florida Panthers 2nd Round Draft Pick Rocco Grimaldi on a penalty shot late in the game with the score tied 1-1. Gordon would make 51 saves in a 4-3 loss to University of North Dakota during the 2014 GNS, his final game with the Clan.
