18 January 216 11 hrs 7/216 In 214, the total amount of waste generated decreased by 35.9 per cent over 213. Solid Waste Management: 214 In 214, the total amount of solid waste generated amounted to 1.4 million, down by 35.9 per cent over the previous. The main agent being a decrease of 46. per cent in the generation of non-hazardous mineral waste, which was partially offset by increases of 68.1 and 7.4 per cent for hazardous and other non-hazardous waste respectively (Table 1). Similarly, waste treatment also fell by 35.3 per cent over the same period, mainly due to a steep decrease in the management of waste that was treated as backfi lling (75.3 per cent) and disposal at sea (34.8 per cent) (Table 2). Waste disposed at the Għallis landfi ll went up by 3. per cent, mainly due to an increase of 12,652 or 8.5 per cent in household and similar waste. On the other hand, a decrease of 9.3 per cent was recorded for sorting residues (Table 3). Such developments can be partly attributed to a decrease in the waste treated at the Sant Antnin waste treatment plant. In fact, in 214, waste output from this plant was cutback by 9,22 (14.1 per cent). The highest drop was in sorting residues (organic material sorted from municipal waste) output to the anaerobic digestion plant (28.3 per cent) followed by sorting residues output to landfi ll (15.2 per cent) (Table 4). Total waste incinerated at the Marsa thermal treatment facility decreased by 465, down by 7.1 per cent over the previous. This drop can be largely attributed to lower amounts of animal and mixed food waste (8.7 per cent) which represents 77.4 per cent of the waste treated at this facility (Table 5). During the under review waste output from private pre-treatment facilities ammounted to 9,639 of which 92.6 per cent were exported for recycling and recovery (Table 6). Inert waste treatment in 214 was characterised by a decrease of 44.1 per cent in treated amounts. Reductions were recorded for all waste categories and for all treatment types except for the recycling of other mineral waste which went up by 114,861 or 4.7 per cent (Table 7). Households showed a greater preference for the Grey/green bag collection over Bring-in sites for the disposal of recyclable waste. Methodological Notes 1. 2. 3. Data on sludges and dredging spoils is presented in wet weight. 4. Waste generation figures in Table 1 are derived from data about the waste inputs into waste management facilities (double counting is eliminated) with the exception of 21 when the data about private pre-treatment facilities was still missing. In order to address this data gap, data about waste exports which originate from private facilities was used. This data was sourced from the trans-frontier shipments of the waste register which is maintained by MEPA. 5. 6. 7. Totals for waste generation (Table 1) and treatment (Table 2) do not equal each other due to storage of waste at certain waste treatment sites. 8. Table 6 presents data about waste outputs from pre-treatment facilities that are operated by the private sector and have a valid waste management permit issued by MEPA. The waste types accepted vary according to the permit conditions of each facility. Figures included in this news release are not comparable to those included in previous waste management news releases due to methodological changes. All data for 214 is to be considered as provisional. Waste items in Tables 1 and 3-7, are classified according to the Statistical European Waste Classification (EWC-Stat. Version 4). This classification has been published in the Waste Statistics Regulation 215/22 (WStatR), and is a substance-oriented nomenclature used to report waste generation and treatment data to Eurostat. Countries such as Malta that collect data according to the European Waste Catalogue can convert the data into EWC-Stat waste categories by means of the table of equivalence which is published in Annex 3 of the WStatR. In Table 2, data is classified according to waste treatment categories that are in line with stipulations set for the reporting of WStatR data to Eurostat. The only exception is pre-treatment which does not feature in Eurostat's data collection. This has been included due to a significant proportion of waste which is treated in Malta is exported for final treatment after pre-treatment in facilities managed both by WasteServ and the private sector. Differences that occur between the 212 data which is presented in this news release and data that is available on the Eurostat website are due to updates in the data sources which have taken place since January 215, when the latest version of the WStatR data was transmitted to Eurostat. Data in Table 7 covers quarry sites which are operated both by the private sector and by WasteServ Malta Ltd. In 212 MEPA revised the permit conditions of these facilities so that material disposed in these facilities could be classified as backfilling. This explains why in 212 disposal in quarries ceased and backfilling in quarries started being recorded. 1. Definitions: Inert mineral waste managed in quarry sites: Waste which is mainly made up of stones, concrete, bricks, tiles and ceramics from construction and demolition. It also includes clean geological material from excavation works. Dredging spoils: Mineral waste that originates from port maintenance activities and is made up of sediments excavated from the seabed. Bring-in sites: Collection depots for clean source segregated recyclable materials. Four types of materials are collected: glass, metals, plastic and paper/cardboard. Civic amenity sites: Collection depots for the separate disposal of household bulky waste and recyclables. Up to 214 there were five sites operated by WasteServ Malta Ltd. Green/Grey Bag Collection from Households: Door-to-door collection of mixed paper, metals and plastics from households on pre-determined weekdays. As from 214 door-to-door collection of glass is also taking place in certain localities. Collected waste items are then sorted by material at the Sant Antnin waste treatment plant and in private pre-treatment facilities. 11.
