Nursery Math Assessment Name: Age: Class: The Counting Board Building the Stair Puts away blocks 1-10 when chosen randomly (by looking at the size of the block) Puts away blocks 1-10 sequentially (+1 sequence) When blocks are placed away from the table, can go across the room and return with appropriate block. (visual and auditory memory) Skills: Sequences quantities under 10. Visualizes size relationships. Responds to and uses positional vocabulary (next, after). Demonstrates eye-hand coordination, discrimination, incrd spatial awareness. Builds a staircase in different boxes (sees +1 relationship w/o puzzle) Points to step and says up, up, up (one-to-one correspondence) Finds a block that is the same size as the missing block (sees size relationships and completes the sequence) Skills: Compares sizes, completes sequences, has one-to-one correspondence. Demonstrates eye-hand coordination. Filling the boxes When one block of a pair is put into a box, finds the missing partner to complete the row Skills: Visually measures size of missing addend. Pattern boards Can match cube pattern to 1-6 boards (sees patterns) Can place 1-6 boards in sequence (sees + 1 relationship) Builds the patterns 1-6 (reproduce patterns) If given less cubes, can tell how many more are needed Skills: Subitizes, sees +1, -1 relationships, builds quantities of 1-6 from memory Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 1

Objects Put one object on, next to, or under a block. Skills: Can follow verbal directions that include positional vocabulary. Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 2

Pre K-4-5 Math Assessment Name: Age: Class: Counting Board Knows the name of each block and where it fits Puts away, stands up or finds the block that comes after a given block Names the block that comes before a given block Names the block that comes between two given blocks Can go across the room and get the block by name (visual and auditory memory) Skills: Visualizes and sequences quantities under 10. Uses number names and positional vocabulary to describe the sizes and relationships. Building the Stair Filling the boxes Builds a staircase in the 10 Box naming the blocks (sees + 1 relationship) Points to each step and says the number (one-to-one correspondence) Names the missing block (sees size relationships and completes the pattern) Skills: Compares sizes, completes patterns, has one-to-one correspondence, counts to 10. Fills in and names the other block in the 10- box (sees missing addend) Names 2 blocks that go together to make 10 (addition combinations) When 10-box is filled with 9 combinations, names the missing pair When 10-box is complete with block pairs and covered, names combination that come next Skills: Adds 2 blocks that make 10. Visually measures size of missing addend. Sees +1, -1 relationships and makes predictions. Sees relationships between the addends, Completes the missing piece. Sees many combinations for one number. Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 3

Pattern boards Recognizes, names and sequences patterns to 1-6 (subitizes, sees + 1 relationship) Builds the patterns 1-6 (reproduce quantities) Recognizes, name and sequence patterns 7-10 If given less cubes, can tell how many more are needed Skills: Subitizes, sees +1, -1 relationships, builds quantities of 1-6 from memory. Adds one without recounting. Note: To subitize, to perceive the number of objects at a glance without counting. Objects When asked to sort objects, can organize according to size, shape and color* Creates, repeats and extends simple AB patterns * Skills: Organizes and names things that are alike and different. Creates, repeats and extends patterns. Single Cubes Answer which block is first, second, third Put one one top of, under, above, below, on, next to, on, off a block or between 2 blocks Skills: Can follow verbal directions that include positional vocabulary. *For this activity you can use any different sized, shaped and colored objects. Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 4

Kindergarten Math Assessment Name: Age: Class: Counting Board Building the Stair Filling the 10 Box Names each number symbol 1-10 and matches it with the block in sequence Can go across the room and get the block that matches the symbol (visual and auditory memory) Names the numeral or block that comes after a given numeral or block Names the numeral or block that comes before a given numeral or block Names and identifies the number between 2 numerals or blocks Skills: Visualizes and sequences quantities under 10. Uses number names, and positional vocabulary to describe the sizes and relationships. Builds a staircase in the 10 Box naming the blocks (sees + 1 relationship) Points to each step and says the number (one-to-one correspondence) Points to each step and counts back by one Names the missing block (sees relationships and completes the pattern) Skills: Compares sizes, completes patterns, has one-to-one correspondence, counts to 10. When 10-box is filled with 9 combinations, names the missing pair When 10-box is complete with block pairs and covered, names the combination that come next Given a subtraction story with 10 as the subtrahend and one block is taken away, can name the block that is left. Builds and equation using numerals, plus, minus and equal sign Solves an equation with a missing addend 7 + = 10 Understands the commutative property (a + b = b + a) Fills other number boxes and names the block combinations for that box Skills: Adds 2 blocks that make 10 and records the number sentence. Visually measures size of missing addend. Sees +1, -1 relationships and makes predictions. Sees relationships between the addends. Completes the missing piece. Subtracts. Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 5

Pattern Boards Builds and names the patterns 1-10 (subitizes and reproduces quantities) Matches the numeral for each pattern 1-10 (sees patterns) Places 1-10 boards in sequence (sees + 1, -1 relationship) Identifies a board as odd or even Given two groups of blocks, names the total for each individual quantity, adds them and finds the board with the total Tells a subtraction story and models it with the appropriate pattern board Given a subtraction story, can use a pattern board to model it and find the answer Uses number symbols, operation signs and equal sign to write an equation Skills: Subitizes. Sees +1, -1 relationships. Builds quantities of 1-10 from memory. Identifies odd and even numbers. Models and tells subtraction stories. Adds and subtracts 1 without recounting. Counts by 2. Objects Counts unit cubes by two to 10 Add one to a quantity w/o counting the first quantity again (I have 5, if I put on one more, how many do I have?) Subtract one from a quantity w/o recounting the quantity again (I have 4, if I take one away, how many do I have?) Skills: Counts by 2. Adds and subtracts 1 to a random arrangement without recounting initial quantity Quantities over 10 and 100 Chart Counts 20 unit cubes (1-to-1, fluency, keeping track) Names 2 digit numbers on the 100-chart (naming 2 digit numbers) Skills: Counts quantities over 10 and reads double-digit numbers. Temple Ary for Stern Math LLC 6

Objects Sorts shape blocks according to size, shape and color Creates, repeats and extends simple patterns such as AB or ABC Skills: Organizes and names things that are alike and different. Creates, repeats and extends patterns. Single Cubes Answer which block is first, second, third Put a block one top of, under, above, below, on, next to, on, off a block or between 2 blocks Skills: Can follow verbal directions that include positional vocabulary. Calendar and Shapes Know the days of the week Names and describes simple shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle) Skills: Memorizes common words and sequences. Information and Graphs Draws a tally to represent an event Given a bar graph, tells the most, the least, the same and how much more a bar is than another (when it is 1 or 2 away) Skills: Tracks information, uses comparison vocabulary and solves comparison word problems.
