Animal Husbandry Sector largely unorganized. 86.5% livestock are in the hand of marginal, small and semi-medium operational holdings (area less than 4 ha). So, limited the scope for introduction of technology innovations and interventions. 75 % cattle low productive local indigenous Presently, 75 % Egg production coming from backyard poultry. Shortage of Feed & Fodder for the Livestock of the State.

Annual shortfall of milk is 1.26 million tones, Egg-4644 million and 378 thousand tones of meat. Insufficient organized infrastructure in terms of automated and hygienic Livestock Products Processing Units. Insufficient organized Marketing facilities. only 2% of total Milk production is being marketed by organized sector. The state requires 16.9 million litres of milk daily. Only Kolkata and nearby suburb has a demand of 2.4 million litres per day. Supply of milk from organized sector throughout the state is nearly 1.2 million litres per day

Organized Livestock Farming Establish industries on processing and marketing of liquid milk and milk products in potential areas by way of procuring milk from the potential milk producing areas of the State. Establishment of automated and hygienic Meat Processing Units. Establishment of leather industry from assured supplies of environmentally processed hides.

Organized poultry farming in specific areas of Large scale poultry layer units Breeding farms Broiler meat processing units Egg powder plants Hatchery units Feed Plants

Recurrence of disease epidemics like bird flu adversely affecting investments in poultry sector. Occurrence of natural calamities like floods and consequent livestock & production losses. Other major producing states have competitive advantage and continue to dominate the markets especially for milk and poultry products.

Changes in socio-economic conditions, with younger generation from farming community preferring urban employment in place of Animal Husbandry. Environment Pollution from unscientific Animal Husbandry Practices.
