FORMATION & PROMOTION OF SELF HELP GROUPS (SHGs): The Director of Extension Education, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara in collaboration with State Institute of Rural Development(SIRD) motivated the educated unemployment youth and farm women and formed 215 nos. of Self Help group in different district of Kamrup, Darrang, Morigaon. Accordingly the selected members of thee various self help group so created from the village of Bozara Bhomlahati, Dumnichowki, Sipajhar, bourdolguri, Patarkuchi and Gariaghuli were imparted training on scientific management of milch cattle, Piggery, chicken including broiler and duck for self employment and income generation of the rural mass. It is to be mentioned that the State Institute of Rural Development under the Swarne Jayanti Sow-Rojgar Yajana scheme, has been selected the beneficiaries out of the trained members of the self help groups and distributed inputs milch cattle, day old chicks (Broiler/Layer), ducklings and pigs for starting their respective farm unit. It is worth mentioning here that under the leadership of Associated Director of Extension Education and the Extension Specialists of this Directorate from Khanapara campus visited the various farm unit time to time and provided the technical support on scientific Management of livestock & Poultry for increased productivity of milk, meat and eggs in those villages. Under the guidance of this Directorate, the cross-bred duck Chera Chambi from Kerala were introduced in Sibsagar and Darrang districts to study their productive performance in Agro-climatic condition of Assam.
13. IMPACT OF THE EXTENSION PROGRAMME: I) Calf mortality in the villages covered under the extension/programme has been reduced to a great extent. II) Majority of the farmers were convinced about the beneficial effects of vaccination and modern veterinary treatment III) Incidence of FMD in the villages has been reduced. IV) More and more people have come forward for adoption of modern technology like artificial insemination. V) The farmers were convinced about the better productive performance of exotic animals like Hampshire pigs, Jersey crossbred cows, Chera Chambi ducks, farmers are approaching the University for supply of Hampshire pigs. VI) Cultivation of high yielding varieties of fodder crops has been started in the Dairy Farm unit holder of the Kamrup and Darrang districts and Dairy Farm Unit of SGHs. 14. ESTABLISHMENT OF DEMONSTRATION UNIT: A demonstration unit was established in 2007 for imparting practical training and demonstration on integrated farming system financed by Govt. of India under Central Sector Scheme for benefit of the farmers and unemployed youth. unit. The unit presently has a small dairy, a fodder, a duck, a broiler and a goatery
