VOLUME 3 BACHELOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (HONS) NEWSLETTER WELCOME TO OUR BIG FAMILY Professor BURAK HO Beste Esra I am thrilled to join Lingnan University and I look forward to working together with students and colleagues. I was born and raised in Istanbul and I lived there until I went to college in the United States. I received my PhD in Sociology from Stanford University and my Bachelor s Degree in Sociology and Economics from Cornell University. Broadly speaking, my research interests are in the areas of income inequality, distributive justice and public opinion. My current research examines American values related to income inequality and focuses on how Americans are reacting to the high levels of inequality at the top of the income distribution. I am looking forward to extending my research to include Hong Kong and mainland China in the coming months. I currently teach Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Research Methods, and Work and Occupation. In addition to writing in sociology I also enjoy writing short fiction. I look forward to seeing you on campus! Dr. SIAH Poh-chua I am a social psychologist. I have lived in Taiwan for 6 years for my postgraduate and undergraduate studies, and the U.K. for another 5 years for my PhD study. My research interest is mainly in the psychological aspects among Chinese Malaysians, since this is an area that seldom be explored by social psychologists. It is nice to have a chance to visit Lingnan for 10 months, since I have learned that Lingnan is a university that emphasizes liberal arts I believe this visitation will enhance my understanding on the impacts that a university can provide to the community, especially from the social science approach. Welcome 1

STAFF ACHIEVEMENTS Distinguished New Book Award 2014 The new book by Professor Tam Wai Keung, Legal Mobilization under Authoritarianism: The Case of Post-Colonial Hong Kong (Cambridge University Press, 2013), has received Honorable Mention from the Committee for the Distinguished Book Award for 2014 of the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association. According to the Committee for the Distinguished Book Award, Prof. Tam's book "...is deeply researched, persuasively argued and lucidly written. In its focus on campaigns of strategic litigation and legal mobilization, this book addresses what are arguably two of the most important areas of study in Sociology of Law since WWII...This work moves creatively beyond recent ground breaking work by Tom Ginsburg and others to add important new insights into the role played by law under authoritarian regimes." Research Excellence Awards Scheme, 2013-14 Congratulation to Professsor Yeung Wai-lan, Vicki, who has been given Honourable Mention under the Research Excellence Awards Scheme. The Scheme was established to give recognition and encouragement to academic staff members who have demonstrated a high standard of research with a proven track record in publication within a specified period. I am grateful to have been awarded the Honorable Mention in REAS. The award encourages me to continue my passion in doing scientific research. My research adopts the experimental approach to examine the role of communication, human mind and behavior in maintaining and building of societies and cultures. Recently, I have also conducted research in consumer psychology. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Prof. Siu Oi-ling for her nomination. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to Prof. Siu for her encouragement and support. I would like to share the honor with her. I also want to thank the selection panel and the external reviewers for their recognition of my research work. P.2 Staff Achievement 2

THE BEST SENIOR THESIS AWARDS In order to encourage final year students to write quality Senior Theses, the Programme Office offers the Best Senior Thesis Award each year. On 20 th October 2014, the Programme Office presented the prizes to the three winners: Miss Man Kwan Ki, Miss. Chan Pik Ying and Mr. Luk Ki Chun. The students parents, supervisors, friends, and faculty members shared their joy and congratulated them for their outstanding performance Chan Pik Ying Writing up a thesis is never easy, from preparing the research proposal, conducting experiments, analyzing the data, and continuing writing and correcting it for a year long, the whole process could be a real challenge. In this year-long project, with the guidance of my supervisor, I get to know what research is really like, and was able to apply knowledge that I have learnt in lecture rooms Luk Ki Chun I am glad to have my final year thesis finished and won the award of Best Senior Thesis Award in 2013-2014. As everyone may agree, it is not an easy task to carry out an independent research work because of several requirements in doing a good thesis. First and foremost, your work must make significant contribution to the academic world. The way to do it is to either collect original data or to apply existing theoretical models in the literature to case studies. All these would involve extensive literature review and in-depth understandings of the issue you are going to study. Students Achievement 11 P.11

LUNCH WITH DELEGATES FROM DUKE-KUSHAN UNIVERSITY It was a great honor to be invited to a lunch meeting held on the 14 th of October with the delegation from the Duke-Kushan University along with a couple other students of Lingnan University. It was a very friendly and relaxed environment to interact with the visitors, sharing my Lingnan life and experiences with them. It was a great chance for me to even hear from the visitors about their experiences. I got to learn and hear about many interesting things including the culture and lifestyle differences. I really enjoyed the meeting especially since it was in such a casual setting in which everyone was talking openly. Ms. KHANZADA Romaisa Student Activities 12 P.12
