1 The University of Hong Kong Department of Sociology BACHELOR OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE (Part-time) CURRICULUM ( ) INTRODUCTION The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) is offered by the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. The programme caters for both the experienced practitioner and those seeking a career in the field of criminal justice or related fields. For practitioners it offers the benefit of tertiary level training and an opportunity to develop a broader knowledge of the core disciplines in criminal justice. It also prepares students for entry to criminal justice careers or postgraduate work by providing a comprehensive understanding of the social, legal, and scientific aspects of the administration of criminal justice. AIMS The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) is designed for students who wish to obtain an academic qualification in the field of criminal justice. Upon completion of the programme, students shall be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the patterns of crime accurately analyse major controversial issues in the administration of the criminal justice system - 1 -

2 apply the analytical skills and global conceptual knowledge to professional career in criminal justice or other related fields BCJ COURSE STRUCTURE The BCJ curriculum consists of a series of courses at basic, intermediate and advanced levels which introduce and explore in-depth the various aspects of criminal justice in addition to the general humanities and social sciences courses. The programme is supported by highly qualified academic staff in the Faculty of Social Sciences and experienced criminal justice practitioners with higher degrees. The programme which normally extends over 4 academic years provides candidates with the flexibility of completing their studies with a maximum period of 6 academic years. Students are required to complete not less than 180 and not more than 198 credits from the curriculum. CREDIT EXEMPTIONS Students holding criminal justice and/or related qualifications may apply for exemption on the condition that they fulfil the Bachelor of Criminal justice admission requirements. The amount of advanced credits to be granted shall be determined by the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on a case-by-case basis. Students who are granted advanced credits may be required to complete a certain specified number of basic-level courses before they are allowed to enrol in intermediate-level or advanced-level courses. AWARD The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) is an honours degree awarded by the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. ASSESSMENT Students are assessed on the basis of coursework assignments, examinations, and participation in workshops and seminars. Each 3-credit and 6-credit course leads to one written examination paper which will be one or two hours in length respectively. The final grade of each course is determined by examination performance and coursework assessment in the ratio of 60:40, unless otherwise specified. They are also required to complete and present a dissertation or 2 Criminal Justice courses in - 4 -

5 their final year of study. COURSE FEE The programme fee is HK$34,500 per year which includes study materials, lectures, tutorials, workshops, academic writing sessions and examinations. The part-time BCJ students will enjoy the same facilities as the full time students such as library, sports centre, computer centre, medical service and other general student support.
