BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY Centenary Year International BHU Alumni Meet (IBAM-2015) & Seminar on "Science & Religion: Mahamana's Vision" 23-24,November 2015 Organized by : Alumni Cell, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi -221005
International BHU Alumni Meet (IBAM 2015) & Seminar Banaras Hindu University is a tribute to the vast vision, indomitable spirit and unflagging zeal of our founding father Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji. It is a monument to his selfless service in the cause of Indian education. A great patriot, an eminent educationist, a silvertongued orator, an eminent lawyer, a social reformer, a torch-bearer of the downtrodden, and above all a great nation builder, Malaviyaji lived for us and the future generations. His vision is embedded in the unique architectural layout of BHU, a magnificent silhouette against the Gangetic sky at dawn with gothic pillars. Mahamana dreamt of creating an ideal scheme of education which would serve the cause of nation building, rise above narrow sectarian interests, combine the best in western scientific methods with all that is good and great in Indian culture and promote a broad liberation of mind and religious spirit. Every student who passes through the portals of this great institution carries these seeds of the timeless vision of Mahamana with him/her. Our alumni had over the years ardently desired a common platform where they could come together, renew links with their alma mater and reflect on how they can best spread the lofty ideals of Mahamana. Several Alumni Meets (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012) have been organised at BHU. The vision of Alumni Meet has been to engage and encourage alumni to stay connected to their alma mater, spread its vision and contribute to its success. Our alumni are the ambassadors of BHU and are dedicated to the welfare of the university, the preservation of traditions of excellence in education and service, and human advancement with a zeal to serve the nation and the global community. International Seminar Science and Religion : Mahamana's Vision" Concept Note Science and religion or spirituality seem to traverse separate spheres. While science experiments with matter, spirituality experiments with the individual person, the self. The entire attempt of science rests with matter, whereas the entire endeavour of spirituality is with the individual. Science aims to bring the matter to where truth is unravelled, spirituality posits the individual to a state where he/she can be able to see the Truth. Apparently, science does not necessarily aim to transform the individual; it believes that as the man is, truth can be known and can be had in its unchanged state. Science believes if we understand matter, we can discover truth. Spirituality emphasizes if the individual transforms himself/herself, he/she will experience truth. Quest for science is quest for matter, quest for spirituality is quest for conscience. At a deeper level, with the spiritual evolution of mankind, a new awakening emerges that science and spirituality are complementary; there is sharing and coordination between the two. Sages like S. Radhakrishnan have understood the ultimate reality that the world is an ordered whole, with an unbroken continuity, a complete unity from the changes in the atom to the movements of history.
International BHU Alumni Meet (IBAM 2015) & Seminar Nature is one large whole constituted with matter, life, mind and value which intermingle and coexist. The atom and its surroundings, the organism and its environment, the self and not-self, the individual and society are expressions of a unity which they yearn to seek. Thus, in existence and experience science and religion are informed by the same unity. Albert Einstein, who understood this mystery behind the existence and experience, believed, religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals itself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, is God. The visionary founder of the Banaras Hindu University Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya brought about this amalgamation of science and spirituality in his creation of the university, thus becoming the harbinger of the futuristic education in the country. He believed that there is a need for sensitive spiritual heart along with a rational reasoning scientific mind. Heart and mind both are essential for human beings; similarly, spiritual conscience requires scientific temper. If human conscience is enriched and enlightened, scientific discoveries will have human face and will work for the good of mankind. Similarly, endowed with scientific temper, spiritual quest will be free from all biases and superstitions. Science thus, contributes to spiritualization of our understanding of life. The seminar sub-themes may include: 1. Conceptual Considerations 2. Sage Scientist and Scientist Sage 3. Questing Spirit 4. Science, Religion and Sustainability 5. Creativity, Religion and Technology 6. Religion and Innovations in Science 7. Science and Religion Invent Tomorrow 8. Science, Religion and Humanism 9. Science and Religion: Towards the Absolute 10.
