BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport National Award
What are BTEC Nationals? They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. Provide progression opportunities within the same or related areas of study within universities and other institutions. They attract UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications within education institutions within the UK.
How the students will study the course The students will cover seven units over a two year period. For each unit the learners are required to carry out assessments which are internally assessed against a grading criteria. Due to the nature of the course only those students that are prepared to carry out detailed coursework should take the qualification. In order to pass each unit the learner will need to carry out a number of assignments to demonstrate they can meet all the learning outcomes for the unit.
BTEC Past Success 2012 All students gained an (A*) Distinction* 2013 group of 7 we had 3 x Distinction* 2 x Distinction and 2 x Merit 2014 group of 10 we had 2 leave after Yr 12 with certificates and the rest gained the qualification with Distinctions and Merits On average students achieved 2 grades higher in their BTEC award than they did in their A Level subjects Some achieved 4 grades higher University places accepted include; University of Surrey Business & Retail Management University of Kent Psychology University of Plymouth Architecture University of Bath Sport, Health & Fitness St Marys University College, Twickenham Physical and Sport Education University of Portsmouth Sport and Exercise Science
What sort of things will we learn in each unit? Unit 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport : The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.
Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness This unit provides an opportunity for learners to explore the body s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.
Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport The aim of this unit is to make the learner explicitly aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry. Key factors that influence health and safety in sport. Risk assessment Plan a safe sporting activity How to maintain the safety of others in sport
Unit 4: Fitness Training and Programming The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to plan fitness training sessions and design fitness training programmes. Understand the fitness requirements of different sporting activities. Understand the different methods of physical fitness training Plan a fitness training programme Monitor and evaluate a fitness training programme
Unit 5: Sports Coaching The aim of this unit is to develop a learners understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions. Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring Understand a range of laboratory based and field based fitness tests. Unit 8: Practical Team Sports The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation. Assess own performance Assess others performance
BTEC National Award in Sport The course is to be run over 2 years and on gaining the Subsidiary Diploma it is equivalent to 1 A2 qualification. If the student choose to leave the subject after Yr 12 as long 30 credits have been achieved it is possible to gain a Certificate in the subject equivalent to an AS qualification Qualifications given are that of Pass, Merit and Distinction. At the end of the award a pass is equivalent to a grade E at A2, a merit is equivalent to a grade C and a distinction equivalent to a grade A/A*
BTEC National Award in Sport Additionally the student s have the opportunity to do the equivelent of a BTEC and a half! This is a 90 credit course which means at the end the student can get the equivalent of a A2 + AS which is good for their UCAS points. The course is to be run over 2 years and on gaining the award they get a Diploma in Sport and exercise.
Credit value Every unit and qualification in the framework will have a credit value. The credit value of a unit specifies the number of credits that will be awarded to a learner who has achieved the learning outcomes of the unit..
Units and Credit value The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport is a 60-credit and 360- guided-learning-hour (GLH) Qualification that consists of units both mandatory and specialist that provide for a combined total of 60 credits.
