Introduction FontExplorer X is a server supported software product family for Font Management. It ensures font consistency to all users across the network, and unifies the organizational aspects of your different workflows. In short, all users will see the same fonts in the same familiar way. FontExplorer X can also act as a sophisticated license compliance manager. It allows you to search, track, edit, reclaim and generate custom license reports of your Font assets. FontExplorer X Pro comes with a whole host of font discovery and diagnostic tools. These tools will allow you to review your fonts design and functionality all in great detail. The integrated print feature allows you to create your own custom catalog (Macintosh version only). The purpose of this guide is to provide easy to use, step-by-step instructions for a typical FontExplorer X Server and FontExplorer X Pro client installation. 1

Installation Prerequisites Before installing FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server, it is recommended that you download the following: FontExplorer X Pro and FontExplorer X Server Installation files: Download these files from www.fontexplorerx.com/download or from the links provided to you in an e-mail from your technical consultant. FontExplorer X Pro and FontExplorer X Server license files which were provided to you in an e-mail or download link. Microsoft.Net framework v3.5 SP1 (For Windows installation): You can download and install v3.5 SP1 (or later SP) of Microsoft.Net from: http://www.microsoft.com/net/ download. If a later version of.net is installed, v3.5 must be additionally installed. A higher version number does not replace v3.5. 2

FontExplorer X Server Installation Installing FontExplorer X Server (Macintosh) FontExplorer X Server can be installed on an Apple Macintosh computer by following the instructions given below: Requirements For hardware and OS requirements, see the Read Me file contained in your downloaded software package. Installation Procedure 1. Open the downloaded FontExplorerXServer folder and double-click on the.zip file contained in the folder Mac Server. 2. Double-click on the FontExplorer X Server.pkg file to start the installer. 3. In the Introduction screen, click on the Continue button. 4. Read the content on the Read Me screen to learn more about the installation procedure in detail. Click on Continue. 5. Read the software license agreement and click on the Continue button. 6. In the following dialog, click on the Agree button if you accept the terms of the software license agreement. 7. In the Installation Type screen, click on the Install button to install FontExplorer X Server. 8. Click on the Close button to exit the installer. The FontExplorer X Server preference panel will automatically be launched. 9. If the FontExplorer X Server panel does not open automatically, open the System Preferences and click on the FontExplorer X Server icon. Software license agreement dialog 10. In the bottom section of the FontExplorer X Server window, the server status will show Not running. In order to start the server a license file must first be installed. 11. To add a license, click on the Server License tab. 12. Click on the Select button to open the file selection dialog. Here, select the FontExplorer X Server license file that has been provided to you and click on the Open button. 13. You should now see the license information in Server (Mac) preference pane the Server License tab. Select the Start Server at System startup option. This will ensure that the FontExplorer X Server service will restart after any machine re-start. For manual server/ client connection configurations, uncheck the option to enable Bonjour. Manual Server/client network connection is configured in the client. (See step 2 on page 11 for Macintosh client and step 2 on page 15 for Windows Client) 14. Click on the Start button in the bottom right corner of the window to start the server. 4

15. In the bottom portion of the pane you should see that the server now shows the status Running. FontExplorer X Pro clients, once installed, will be able to connect to the server via IP address or server name. Connection via server name is only supported by FontExplorer X Pro for Mac. FontExplorer X Pro Windows clients will use the server s IP address to connect. Installing FontExplorer X Server (Windows) FontExplorer X Server can be installed on a Windows based computer by following the instructions given below: Requirements For hardware and OS requirements, see the Read Me file contained in your downloaded software package. Installation Procedure 1. Open the downloaded FontExplorerX Server folder and double-click on the setup.zip file contained in the folder Win Server. 2. Double-click the FontExplorer X Server s installation file to start the installation wizard. Depending on the version of Windows operating system you are using, you may be required to authenticate the application in order to install FontExplorer X Server. 3. In the language selection dialog box, select the language for FontExplorer X Server installation wizard and click on the OK button. 5

4. After the installation wizard has completed the preparation for the installation procedure, click on the Next button. 5. In the license agreement screen, click on the I accept the terms in the license agreement if you accept the agreement and click on the Next button. 6. In the customer information screen, enter your username and the name of your organization. Press the Next button to continue. 7. In the Setup type screen, choose between complete setup or custom setup. a. Complete: Choosing a complete setup will install all the components of the FontExplorer X Server application but will not install Bonjour (Bonjour provides automatic discovery of the FontExplorer X Server on your local area network). b. Custom: Choosing a custom setup will allow you to additionally install Bonjour as an optional component for FontExplorer X Server. If you are going Setup type screen to manually connect to your server via IP or DNS (Mac client only), then we recommend that you choose the Complete setup option. 8. After selecting a setup type, click on the Next button to continue. 9. Click the Install button in the Ready to install the program screen to begin installation. 10. After the installation, the InstallShield Wizard Completed screen will be shown. Click on the Finish button to exit the installer. If you wish FontExplorer X Server to automatically start, select the Launch FontExplorer X Server checkbox. Otherwise manually launch the server from the Windows Start menu. 11. Open the FontExplorer X Server control panel. You can open the control panel by going to Start > Programs > FontExplorer X Server Panel > or right click the FontExplorer X Server icon in the system tray > Open FontExplorer X Server Panel. Installation wizard completed 12. In the bottom section of the FontExplorer X Server window, the server status will show Not running. In order to start the server a license file must first be installed. To add a license, click on the Server License tab on the top. 13. Click on the Select button to open the file selection dialog. Here, select the FontExplorer X Server license file provided to you. Click on the Open button. 14. You should see license information in the Server License tab. Click on the Start button in the bottom right corner of the panel to start the server. 15. In the bottom portion of the pane you should see that the server now shows the status as Server (Windows) control panel Running. FontExplorer X Pro clients, once installed, will be able to connect to the server via IP address. Connection via server name is only supported by FontExplorer X Pro for Mac. FontExplorer X Pro Windows clients will use the server s IP address to connect. 7

FontExplorer X Pro Installation Installing FontExplorer X Pro (Macintosh) FontExplorer X Pro can be installed on a Macintosh computer by following the instructions given below: Requirements For hardware and OS requirements, see the Read Me file contained in your downloaded software package. Installation Procedure 1. Download the latest version of FontExplorer X Pro from the link that is provided and save the.dmg file to a convenient location. 2. Double-click the FontExplorer X Pro s.dmg file, this will open the FontExplorer X Pro License Agreement. 3. If you agree with the license terms, click on the Agree button to open the disk image. 4. In the disk image, drag the FontExplorer X Pro icon onto the Applications Folder icon. 5. After the installation, you will be able to open FontExplorer X Pro from the Applications folder. If you are starting FontExplorer X Pro for the first time, the setup assistant will guide you through the setup process. Installer 8

6. Read the instructions on the Introduction screen and click on the Continue button. 7. In the License Agreement screen, read the license and select I hereby agree to the license agreement check box if you agree to the terms of the software agreement. 8. Click on the Continue button to continue to the Organize Font Files screen. 9. To safeguard against accidental font deletions, it is recommended that you use the Organize Font Files feature with the Copy fonts to a new location option. To do so, select the Organize Font Files check box and choose Copy fonts to a new location. You can also change the font files copy location by clicking on the Change button. 10. Click on the Continue button to go to the Import Fonts screen. Organize font files screen 11. In the Import Fonts screen, FontExplorer X Pro locates all the fonts installed locally in the system. You can add more fonts by specifying specific fonts folders. Use the + button on the bottom left corner to add font folders from which the fonts will be imported into FontExplorer X Pro. 12. After adding the font folders, press the Import button to start the font import process. 13. In the Plug-Ins screen, you can install FontExplorer X Pro plug-ins based on the applications you have. Press the Install button to install a plug-in. 14. Click on the Continue button to go to the Updates screen. 15. Ensure that the Check for update at startup check box is selected. Click on the Continue button. If you choose the Move fonts to a new location option and then later delete the fonts from FontExplorer X Pro, the original font files will be deleted. If you do not have a backup, the fonts will be lost. Server administrators are responsible for loading fonts onto the server. It is advised that they maintain a backup of the font data as a fail-safe against data loss through accidental font deletions. 9

16. In the Conclusion screen, make sure to select the Clean caches check box. Click on the Clean button to clean the font caches. 17. It is required that you restart your computer after deleting the font caches. Click on the Restart button to restart your computer. 18. After the restart, when you launch FontExplorer X Pro, you will be asked for your product license. 19. Click on the Add License button to open the Client License Selection dialog. Conclusion screen Alternatively, you can also go to the menu > FontExplorer X Pro > Client License This will open the FontExplorer X Pro License dialog box. Here, click on the Select License File button to open the Client License Selection dialog. 20. In the Client License Selection dialog, go to the location where the client license file is stored and select it. 21. Click on the Open button. License dialog 22. FontExplorer X Pro should now have a valid license with your details. It is good practice to regularly clean the System Font and Application font caches as a preventive measure against corrupted font caches. 10

Connecting with a FontExplorer X Server Follow the instructions given below to connect with a FontExplorer X Server: 1. Open FontExplorer X Pro. 2. If you do not have Bonjour installed, go to the Server menu and click on the Manually Connect option. Alternatively, you can also press Command + K on your keyboard. 3. In the window that appears, enter the IP address or name of a machine that has FontExplorer X Server running. Manually connect to the server 4. You will see the server appear in the Source list. Click on the server s name to log in via the Summary & Login tab. 5. In the Login section, enter a username and password to connect to the machine. (Username = admin; Password = admin) 6. You are now ready to begin configuring FontExplorer X Server according to your requirements. For more detailed information please see the user guide. 7. Click on the Log out button to disconnect from the server. Connected to a server 11

Installing FontExplorer X Pro (Windows) FontExplorer X Pro can be installed on a Windows based computer by following the instructions given below: Requirements For hardware and OS requirements, see the Read Me file contained in your downloaded software package. Installation Procedure 1. Download the latest version of FontExplorer X Pro from the link that is provided and save the installation file (.exe) to a convenient location. 2. Double-click the FontExplorer X Pro s installation file to start the installation wizard. 3. In the language selection dialog box, select the language for FontExplorer X Pro installer and click on the OK button. 4. After the installation wizard has completed the preparation for the installation procedure, click on the Next button to enter customer information. 5. In the customer information screen, enter your username and the name of your organization. Press the Next button to continue. InstallShield Wizard 12

6. In the setup type screen, choose between complete setup or custom setup. After selecting a setup type, click on the Next button to continue. a. Complete: Choosing a complete setup will install all the components of the FontExplorer X Pro application but will not install Bonjour (Bonjour provides automatic discovery of the FontExplorer X Server on your local area network). b. Custom: Choosing a custom setup will allow you to additionally install Bonjour as an optional component for FontExplorer X Server. If you are going to manually connect to your server via IP, then we recommend that you choose the Complete Setup option. Setup type screen 7. Click on the Install button in the Ready to install the program screen to begin the installation. Depending on the version of windows operating system you are using, authentication may be required to install FontExplorer X Pro. 8. After the installation, in the Installation Wizard Completed screen, click on the Finish button to exit the installer. If you wish FontExplorer X Pro to automatically start, select the Launch FontExplorer X Pro checkbox. Otherwise manually launch the application from the Windows Start menu. 9. Start FontExplorer X Pro for the first time. FontExplorer X Pro will start automatically if the Launch FontExplorer X Pro check box is selected at the last step of the FontExplorer X Pro installation wizard. 10. On the first start, FontExplorer X Pro will ask for a valid user license. In the dialog box, click on the Add License button to add a valid license file. Alternatively, you can also go to Menu option > Client License to view add a license. 11. In the file dialog box, select the license file and click on the Open button. 12. In the Introduction screen, click on the Continue button to view the license agreement. 13. Select the I hereby agree to the license agreement check box if you agree with the terms of the software license agreement. Click on the Continue button. 14. applications. Click on the Set Folder button beside a desired application to select its Plug-in folder to install the plug-in. Click on the Continue button. 19. Click on the Continue button in the Updates screen. 20. Click on the Finish button to close the startup wizard and start FontExplorer X Pro. Connecting with a FontExplorer X Server Follow the instructions given below to connect with a FontExplorer X Server: 1. Open FontExplorer X Pro. 2. If you do not have Bonjour installed, go to the Server menu and click on the Manually Connect button. 3. In the popup that appears, enter the IP address of a machine that has FontExplorer X Server running. Manually connect to the server 4. You will see the server appear in the Source list. Click on the server s name to log in from the Summary & Login tab. 5. In the Login section, enter a username and password to connect to the machine. (Username = admin; Password = admin) 6.
