MESSAGE FROM JACQUES ROGGE, IOC PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues, Protecting the health of the athletes is one of the priorities for the International Olympic Committee. As risk is inherent to the practice of sport, scientific research is important to ensure their safety in the short- as well as the long-term. There is therefore a need for improved prevention and management. This is why the fourth edition of the Olympic Symposia and Workshop on Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy being organised in Vancouver by our Medical Commission, is placed under the main theme Prevention and Treatment of Head Injuries in Sport, thus demonstrating that this concern is very high up on the agenda. Our wish is to offer to all NOC team doctors and physiotherapists the most recent methods and knowledge to provide the most effective medical advice and to ensure the best possible care for their athletes. As a former team doctor myself, I know how important it is to be informed of the latest scientific work and medical practices, so that these can be used to serve the athlete in the best way possible. With its 3 symposia on Prevention and Management of Head Injuries in Sport, the Athletes Passport and the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neck Injuries in Sport, as well as its practical workshop on Kinesio Taping and Muscle Performance, this program is intended to bring together the fields of science, research and hands-on medical and physiotherapeutic practice. I sincerely hope you will find time during your busy schedule at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games to attend our Symposia and Workshop, which I am sure will be interesting, useful and worthwhile. I look forward to your contribution to this very important step towards safer sports participation. symposium-depliant-1.indd 2 15.12.09 08:54
