WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION YMCA Courses for the Community A great way to learn a new skill it could change your life! It s never too late to learn something new. The courses are targeted at the local community and the surrounding area. The tutors teach to a high standard, finding time for personal attention and inspiring students to develop. All courses are leisure courses, with the emphasis on learning in an enjoyable and supportive environment and with paper work kept to a minimum. We hope you will be enthused by the following courses and keen to come along to a class or two. In addition to the community courses, the schools are also used during the evenings and at weekends by local organisations, such as 1610 Leisure, SASP and more. We are keen to share the facilities and involve everyone in the local community in the life of Robert Blake/Elmwood School and Chilton Trinity. If you would like more details of some of the activities that take place at the school sites in the evenings please contact our Bookings Co-ordinator on the details provided below. HOW TO BOOK ONTO A COMMUNITY COURSE/S Please contact YMCA Somerset Coast on 01278 726004 or email info@ymca-sc.org At your first session you will be informed about the course content and what you will need to bring for the next weeks. For the first session please bring a notepad and pen to take notes no payment will be required for this first session. PAYMENTS FOR COURSES You will be asked to pay for each and every session that you attend. Payment will be taken on the evening of your course by your tutor. All of the money you pay goes directly into ensuring that we provide the best courses and tutors we can and ensuring the courses meet your needs GRADUATION At the end of term we will be holding a graduation evening for all of the participants in this terms programme. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance and have the opportunity to find out and sample some of what has been going on with the other courses. Please come along and take part in this fun and sociable night. There will also be an opportunity to get an early bird booking for next terms courses. The Graduation evening date and time will be confirmed during the course. CANCELLATION POLICY If a course is cancelled, students will be given as much notice as possible. If you have changed your mind and no longer want to attend the course please inform the YMCA Somerset Coast as soon as possible on 01278 726004. COOKING & BAKING TUTORS: LEONIE & SEAN Leonie and Sean Allen would love to invite you along to their fantastic cookery classes; they both have great backgrounds with cooking and baking. Over the duration of the course you will be developing your cookery and bakery skills where you will begin to have the confidence to put meals together yourself and not feel the need to be tied down to a recipe. In some of their ingredients lists you will find they haven't given exact amount of spices etc to bring, this is because you will be expected to taste and begin to develop your understanding on what seasoning is needed and where. This is a fun course for those wishing to gain confidence with cooking. The chef holds curry courses around Somerset, normally charging 135 for the 6 week course. CREATIVE WRITING: NOVELS TUTOR: CAROYLN LEWIS Guidance will be given on all aspects of novel writing: how to write believable characters, how to handle a plot, how to write authentic dialogue. The course will also cover how to present a completed manuscript to agents and publishers. With the electricity you produce you can do many things like Charging; Lighting; Irrigation and Powering your Van, Shed and/or Home! We will teach you where to get ALL the materials needed, and where you can find some of them for FREE, so that you can go and make more 12V panels for your projects at home. In this practical training course you will learn: The electrical basics: current, voltage, resistance, power, series and parallel circuits. How to build DIY solar PV panels. How to test, understand and connect together your solar panels. Time permitting, how to test, understand and use 12V batteries with your panels, and how to power appliances. A little bit of stress can be beneficial to us but too much and our emotional and physical health can start to suffer. Our Looking after Yourself course will help you to understand the negative effects of stress on your mind and body and will provide self-help techniques which will support you to manage your own stress levels now and in the future. Cooking on a budget? Fed up with the same old meals? This is an ideal course for busy people and students! Beginners and more experienced home cooks will all learn new tips and techniques. Whether you are cooking for one or a family, you will learn a range of Quick Fix recipes and cooking methods for easy, nutritious suppers that can be prepared in 30 minutes. Each week, you will choose two recipes and bring ingredients to make two popular dishes to enjoy at home. All ingredients will be readily available locally, including seasonal produce and store cupboard ingredients. Special diets can be accommodated please advise at the time of enrolment.
