6 Portugal, Women & Winemaking aicep Portugal Global 7 WINES OF PORTUGAL A WORLD OF CHOICES It is hard to find a region of Portugal where there aren t vineyards. and diversity of Portuguese wines is completed. In the North of Portugal, we can find vineyards in the shape of verdant floodplains or walled terraces that surround majestic rivers. In the South of Portugal, the bright green vine leaves contrast with the roughness of the cork forests. Near the coast, vines grow fearlessly from the sand, withstanding the salty winds and the morning mist. On a mountain that rises from the Atlantic Ocean, vineyards grow in a maze-like web of stone walls, absorbing the warmth released by the black basalt. An amazing amount of 250 indigenous grape varieties are born from this diversity of landscapes, thus producing wines of supreme originality. Every year, 14 wine regions blend their native grape varieties and produce countless wines that have excitingly different flavours. To all this we add microclimates, different soils and unique winemaking traditions and the unexpected quality Endless reds, rosés, whites, Vinho Verde, Muscatel, Port Wine, sparkling wines, Madeira wine It is safe to say that there is a great Portuguese wine for every palate. After centuries of refining the art, Portuguese winemaking is currently experiencing a new golden age. Alongside ancient agricultural co-operatives and large companies one of them considered the best wine producer in the world countless small estates are now producing their own distinctive wines. A new, highly trained generation of winemakers is mixing secular winemaking traditions with science and innovation, building a modern paradigm in Portuguese winemaking which is applauded by the rest of the world. We have internationally awarded wines, high profile wines that gained the respect of demanding critics and the attention of specialized magazines. Now, Portuguese wines are waiting to be discovered. By you.

8 Portugal, Women & Winemaking aicep Portugal Global 9 PORTUGAL, WOMEN & WINEMAKING The Embassy of Portugal, with the Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency and the Cultural and Tourism departments in Copenhagen, is promoting the Portugal, Women & Winemaking event. Portugal, Women & Winemaking in Copenhagen is both a Conference (on May 10) and a Wine Tasting Event (on May 11) to celebrate the importance of Portuguese women winemakers, cellar owners and oenologists. The catalyst for the event is the hosting by the city of Copenhagen of the United Nations Women Deliver Conference from 16 19 May 2016. This is the world s largest global conference gathering world leaders, advocates, policymakers, journalists, young people, researchers and leaders to discuss all issues concerning women s health, rights and well-being. The event Portugal, Women & Winemaking will bring together some of the most interesting and go-getting Portuguese women winemakers to highlight how women can achieve an important and growing role even in a traditionally men dominated sector like wine making. In Portugal there have been a large number of women in charge of wineries from the xix century. Now there is a new generation of Portuguese women winemakers who are mixing the most up-to-date winemaking techniques with traditional Portuguese grape varieties. The event can be a great prelude for the Women Deliver conference, while also promoting Portuguese wine excellence in Denmark and Scandinavia through a feminine point-of-view, bringing together very successful oenologists and also women running large-scale wineries, in some cases on a multigenerational family business model. On the 10th of May the Portuguese women winemakers will be ready to discuss their experiences during a brief debate on the different challenges for women in Portugal and Denmark, which might inspire some student works at the University, particularly in the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies department. Rui Macieira, Ambassador Embassy of Portugal Toldbodgade, 31, 1.th. 1253 Copenhagen Did you know? A total of 228 Portuguese wines were awarded on 15th Mundus Vini Edition, a wine competition that was held in Germany February 2016. The China Wine & Spirits Awards 2016 awarded 104 Portuguese Wines Decanter World Wine Awards, 2015 614 medals and awards. Portuguese wines have been recognized by international critics and, throughout 2014, were honored with 3535 awards in prestigious international competitions. Here are some examples: In 2014, 3 Portuguese Wines were in the Top 10 wines of the Wine Spectator Top 10. In August 2014, USA Today website readers named Alentejo for best wine region to visit in the world. A total of 325 Portuguese wines were awarded in the 2014 edition of International Wines & Spirits Competition Northern Hemisphere wines.

14 Portugal, Women & Winemaking aicep Portugal Global 15 CONCEITO VINHOS HERDADE DO ESPORÃO CONCEITO WINES is a family business with headquarters in Cedovim, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, an international project centred in the Douro Valley. The acquisition of the 83 hectares of vineyards around Vale da Teja started in the 1940s, but the first bottling occurred only with the 2005 vintage. The local climate is particularly cold, with high altitude, between 450m and 600m, and has both granitic and schistose soils. Oenologist RITA MARQUES, with education in Douro and Bordeaux and professional experience in Douro, California, Bordeaux, New Zealand and South Africa, performs the winemaking of all the wines. Esporão was born in Alentejo from an unconditional will to craft the best wines. That motivation is at the core of everything we do now broadened to more products and regions. The company s project now also extends to Quinta dos Murças, an estate in the Douro region that produces wines with terroir and the same guarantee of quality. In each territory, nature inspires us and helps us to do the best. For this reason, we respect and protect it. We believe that Esporão must serve society and not the other way around. We thus seek a responsible way to develop our activity. 22 Portugal, Women & Winemaking aicep Portugal Global 23 QUINTA DO PINTO QUINTA DO VALE MEÃO Cardoso Pinto family owned boutique winery, in Alenquer, Lisbon wine region. We have a collection of 19 grapes, planted on gentle slopes of clay limestone soils, with southern exposure, that benefit from the Atlantic influence, due to the 25km distance of the sea. In the winery, fermentation is in concrete tanks and using only indigenous yeast, thus producing Natural wines, authentic wines. This important Douro Estate, planted by Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira on 270 hectares of barren common land purchased in 1877, was the last great achievement of the legendary Lady of the Douro. It is owned by her great-great grandson Francisco Javier de Olazabal, now Chairman of the company, the Executive function being carried out by his Enologist son Francisco Olazabal. The vines cover 90 hectares of the property and are planted in soils of different geological nature: schist, granite and alluvial gravel. This project has been instrumental in defending the interests and living conditions of many small winegrowers who deliver their grapes there, and producting top quality wines thanks to the wisdom and passion of winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida. With a total area of 105 hectares, of which 50 are vineyards, Quinta dos Carvalhais, uses exclusively its own grapes to produce exceptional wines that honour the Dão tradition and reputation, such as the Quinta dos Carvalhais Único, the Quinta dos Carvalhais Reserva, Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita, all the Quinta dos Carvalhais variatals, Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita Tardia, etc. After fifteen years working as a winemaker, Susana Esteban decided to embrace the Adventure (Aventura) of becoming a wine producer. At the end of 2011, she started her personal project. Susana Esteban decided to make wines full of character in a slightly different style of the Alentejo traditional way.
