The archipelago is made up of the following islands, Porto Santo, Desertas (three uninhabited Islands: Deserta Grande, Bugio and Ilhéu Chão) and the Nature Reserve of Selvagens has a land area of 801 km2 and a coastline of 402 km Area (km 2 ): Inhab/Km 2 : Population (N.): 247,568 (2010) The south coast of the island has the largest number of s inhabitants, especially the city of Funchal (40% of total population). 3 Desertas Main Characteristics: Desertas are composed of three islets, Chão, Deserta Grande and Bugio and are located in the southwest of Island With volcanic origin, Desertas have a long rocky and rugged coastline making them almost inaccessible The Nature Reserve has an area of 9,672 ha and includes all islands and islets. The marine area is divided into Partial Reserve in the North, and Complete Reserve in the South Desertas are one of the last strongholds of the Sea Lion. A colony of around 23 animals choose Desertas to live In 1992, Desertas were classified as a Biogenetic Reserve by the Council of Europe, in recognition of its natural and ecological value Selvagens Main Characteristics: Composed of two groups of small islands, Selvagens are located about 163 miles from and represent the extreme south of the Portuguese territory. The most important islets are Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ihéu de Fora It has been a Nature Reserve since 1971 and is one of the oldest in. 4 People Why? Population With 248,000 inhabitants, Funchal has 40% of the total population. Projection (Eurostat) for 2025: 233,000 inhabitants 30% of the total population in are under 25 years old and the ageing and dependency indexes are below the national average. s inhabitants with more than 65 years only represent 13% of total population, while the national average rate for the same age group is 17.9% Resident population increased 0.07% in 2010, above the national average, due to the contribution of the migration component (0.11%).
