Sympodium Interactive Monitor The Sympodium is an interactive monitor which allows you to write (using the pen attached) over anything you display in digital ink, highlight concepts, and take snapshots. Your audience will see your writing instantly as you deliver prepared or impromptu material. The Sympodium connects directly to the lectern computer and acts as both a monitor and interactive tablet. The attached pen can be used instead of a mouse by pressing on the Sympodium Screen. You can still work with the software you re used to such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, or even your Web browser and save all your notes afterwards in.pdf or.jpeg format for example. The Sympodium is connected directly to the lectern PC and uses an application called SMART board to control all interactive functions. You will find the SMART board toolbar located on the left hand side of the desktop. Using SMART board you can do the following: Type using an onscreen keyboard Write or highlight using digital coloured ink Draw shapes & arrows Take a photo of your work or desktop Sympodium Layout. SMART Board Toolbar This floating toolbar appears by default on the left of the screen. You can use the toolbar to access tools such as the onscreen keyboard, spotlight and access SMART Notebook. You can relocate the toolbar using drag and drop from its handle. You can show or hide the toolbar by pressing the Spanner button at the bottom of the sympodium (see Function Tools page 7) As well as using the Pen Tools you can use this toolbar to access more tools. The toolbar is shown by default. You can remove and bring back this toolbar by pressing the Spanner button at the bottom of the monitor (Alternatively, you can click on the icon in your system tray Floating Tools). and select Hide Floating Tools or Show You can also move the toolbar holding your left mouse button in and dragging (or pressing and dragging with your pen) the toolbar using the Move Handle. To minimise of maximise click on (or press with the pen) the Maximise/Minimise arrows. To select/change the function of your pen press the relevant icon with your pen. Select (mouse mode) Black Ink Red Ink Highlighter Eraser Right Click Maximise/Minimise Move Handle SMART Notebook Software Onscreen Keyboard Undo last action Customise Toolbar The SMART software integrates with many popular third-party programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software. If integrated within a program, whatever you write or draw on the interactive product becomes a component of the file. Pen Tools General Use You can use the pen to write on the screen in any application, however it integrates best with Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Shows (see Annotating in PowerPoint page ). In lecture theatres, the pen is generally situated at the rear of the monitor. In all other teaching rooms it is sited to the side of the monitor. 6 The Pen is located either at the back or to the side of the Sympodium Monitor The Pen Tools are located at the top centre of the monitor Choose the colour Ink you wish to use by pressing the associated button Press and drag the pen on the monitor to draw or write on the screen Switch the pen back to a mouse by pressing the Mouse Cursor Pen Tools button. Erase your drawing - You can use the eraser tool to erase part of your drawing. To do this press the erase tool button and press on the screen and move the pen. See the pen tools page for the application you are using for information on how to clear the whole screen or save your annotations. Pen Tools - Annotating in PowerPoint You can use the pen to write on the screen in any application, however it integrates best with Microsoft PowerPoint. When using in PowerPoint you can add a blank slide for ad hoc explanations as well as save your annotations as part of the slides. Open the file you wish to view within PowerPoint Start the slide show Choose the colour Ink you wish to use Press and drag the pen on the monitor to draw or write on the presentation Use the navigation toolbar to move to the previous, next slide, insert a blank slide or end slideshow 6 Erase your drawing: To erase part of the drawing you can turn your pen into an eraser by pressing the eraser button 7 Erase all annotations on slide: Change your pen back to a mouse, and press once on the screen. (You can bring this back using the undo arrow on the floating toolbar SMART Board Toolbar, see page.) 8 Save your drawings at the end of the slide show you are asked if you wish to add your drawings to the slides. If you choose yes all annotations are added as drawing objects. Pen Tools - Microsoft Word and Excel You can use the pen to write on the screen in any application, Microsoft applications have a toolbar called SMART Aware which enables you to use the pen tool and save your annotations and drawings within Microsoft Word or Excel Open the file you need in Word, Excel etc Choose the colour Ink you wish to use. Press and drag the pen on the monitor to draw or write on the screen. Switch back to mouse when finished writing. Erase part of your drawing: Turn your pen into an eraser by pressing the eraser button. Erase all: Turn your pen back to a mouse and press with pen on a blank area of the screen. You can use the SMART aware toolbar to add your drawing as text or as an image. (If the toolbar isn t showing press one of the ink buttons in the pen tools). 6 The first button will add your writing as a drawing object, the second as text. Once this has been done you can save and treat as any other word document or spreadsheet. 7 To Save: Either: Add the drawings to your document using the SMART Aware Toolbar or take a screen shot (see using Screen Capture Page 8). 6 Insert as Image Insert as Text Screen Capture For Your Reference To undo removal of drawing, use the undo arrow on the SMART Board toolbar. SMART Board Toolbar - Customising The SMART Toolbar can be customised to show the tools you are likely to need for your presentation. This includes tools such as a pointer. This allows you to add many pointers to the screen so for example, you can choose which points are the most important or relevant etc. You also have a spotlight to highlight an area of the screen or a screen shade for slow reveals. Before starting this ensure the SMART Board Toolbar is showing (press the Spanner button if not). To add more tools to the toolbar press Customise Toolbar button on the SMART Board Toolbar. The Customise Floating Tools window appears. Using the pen as a mouse press and drag the tool(s) you wish to add from the window to the toolbar. (You can also remove icons from the toolbar by dragging them off the toolbar). The new tool will appear on the SMART Board Toolbar. Using the Screen Shade Customise the SMART Board Toolbar and add the Screen Shade to the SMART board Toolbar Touch the screen shade icon. This will cover the whole of your screen. You can reveal the top, bottom, right or left of your screen by pressing and dragging the relevant dotted handle. For example, press the handle at the top centre of the screen and keeping your pen against the screen move the pen downwards. Function Tools These six buttons in the bottom centre of the monitor give you access to the tools such as right click, SMART Notebook, SMART keyboard, Screen Capture Toolbar and the SMART Board Toolbar. SMART Keyboard SMART Notebook Spanner Button Right Click: Makes next pen press a right click Screen Capture Right Click: Makes next pen press a right click On Screen Keyboard Pressing this button shows the SMART Keyboard window. You can use the SMART Keyboard to type text using your pen. Keyboard Views You can display the SMART Keyboard in the following views: Classic displays a standard QWERTY keyboard layout. Number Pad displays numbers and symbols for math calculations and equations. Write converts text written onto the keyboard with the pen to typed characters. Shortcut displays keyboard shortcuts. Screen Capture The Screen Capture toolbar appears on top of active programs and Web browsers. It enables you to take a screen capture of an image in any window and automatically insert it on a page in to SMART Notebook for you to export as an image, PDF or PowerPoint Slide. You can open the screen capture toolbar by pressing the Function Tools Screen Before starting: Open the SMART Notebook Software. By default, each screen capture you take appears on a new page in SMART Notebook. Press the Screen Capture Button to open the Screen Capture Toolbar To take a screen capture of an area Press Area Capture in the Screen Capture toolbar. The cursor changes to cross hairs. Press and drag the cross hairs on the screen to define the area you want to capture. To take a screen capture of a window Press Window Capture in the Screen Capture toolbar. Select the window that you want to appear in the screen capture. To take a screen capture of the entire screen Press Full Screen Capture the Screen Capture toolbar. in To take a screen capture of a freehand area Press Freehand Capture in the Capture toolbar. The cursor changes to cross hairs. Press and drag the cross hairs on the screen to define the area you want to capture. Switch back to SMART Notebook. Your screen shot appears on the first page.
