Little Gaddesden School Grammar, spelling and punctuation workshop

Grammar, spelling and punctuation (SPAG) are key areas in the teaching of English. We aim to improve writing through improving sentence construction.

At all levels, there is emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as vocabulary development. There is a focus on reading for pleasure with all children encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum. This is important to help develop vocabulary.

Writing Transcription spelling and handwriting + Composition Vocabulary, Grammar and punctuation

The New Curriculum is now in place! From September 2014- Years 1,3,4, and 5. SATs for Years 2 and 6 are under the old system for this year. 2016 New SATs arrangements testing the New Curriculum.

New Tests Key Stage 1 Remains as teacher assessment informed by the tests. Year1 The phonics element of the new English programme of study for reading will be assessed using the phonics screening check. Year2 Writing will not be assessed separately at the end of Key Stage 1 but there will be an additional test in spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The test will consist of three components. Paper 1: 20 minutes A short written task based on a stimulus and prompt. This is designed to assess sentence structure and sentence grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Paper 2: 20 minutes made up of two sections. The first section will be a set of contextual, or themed, questions. The second section will be a set of short answer, stand-alone questions. Paper 3: 15 minutes A spelling task. This will use pictures and/or dictated sentences as prompts. All pupils at the end of key stage 1 will be expected to take all three papers.

Key Stage 2 Year 6 Writing will be teacher assessed through a portfolio of work. There will be no external marking but writing will be moderated internally and externally. GPS test to assess grammar, punctuation, language strategies and spelling. Marked externally.

The test will consist of two components Paper 1: 45 minutes Most questions will be short answer questions. Others may take the form of table or sentence completion or error correction. Paper 2: 15 minutes A Spelling task. This will use dictated sentences as prompts.

How will the results be reported? A new system of standardised scores is to be introduced where 100 is the expected level. No more information is currently available.

How has the curriculum changed? Each year group is expected to know more! As well as embedding the teaching of GPS in English units we are also teaching it as a discrete subject.

What will the tests look like?

How can I help my child? Use a thesaurus to find a synonym to extend your child s vocabulary. Children love new words. Use the thesaurus in microsoft word when children are typing homework. Correct spelling when you see mistakes repeated and stick any tricky words up around the house. Ask questions when reading with your child. Stick to areas you are confident with. Can you find me 4 verbs? Or could you change that verb to the past tense? Can you find a synonym(same meaning) word for eat? Support with learning spelling. Keep practising their spellings (10 minutes a day)
