Purpose This qualification is designed for those people who are in the automotive steering, suspension and alignment section of the Motor industry. Holders of this certificate will be able to carry out automotive administration, diagnose and rectify faults in vehicle steering and suspension systems, rectify tyre, wheel, and driveline faults. They will also be able to align vehicle bodies and repair damaged axles and be able to weld using the oxyacetylene and MIG systems. They will also have knowledge of the current legislation associated with the trade. Holders of the heavy commercial vehicle optional strand, as well as being credited with the car and light commercial vehicle standards, are able to diagnose and rectify faults in heavy road transport suspension and steering systems and repair vehicle chassis. Replacement Information This qualification, the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Brake Service Engineering) [Ref: 0096], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Servicing) [Ref: 0138], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Radiator Repair) [Ref: 0188], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Exhaust Servicing) [Ref: 0372], and the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Tyre Servicing) with optional strands in Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Tyres, Agricultural Equipment Tyres, Off-The-Road Equipment Tyres, Industrial Tyres, and Steering and Suspension [Ref: 0373] have been replaced by the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Vehicle Servicing) with strands in Brake and Clutch, Exhaust Systems, Radiator Repair, Steering and Suspension, Tyres, Underbody and General Service, and Vehicle Security, and with an optional strand in Heavy Vehicle Steering and Suspension [Ref: 1420]. Special Notes Many of the listed unit standards have prerequisites which are in the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Automotive Trades) [Ref: 0017], therefore it is recommended that this certificate be obtained initially or equivalent knowledge and skills are confirmed by the.

Although most training will be carried out on the job through the use of training manuals and record of achievement books, combinations of unit standards or individual unit standards may be offered by accredited polytechnics and private training establishments. Application for recognition of prior learning should be made to the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation and accredited training providers. Credits are not automatic and normally an assessment of ability is required. NQF Ref 0246 Version 4 Page 6 of 8 Previous versions of the qualification Version 3 was issued in order to extend the period of registration to December 2003, to allow time to implement a full review of the qualification. This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below. Credit for Exempt from 2323 15475, 15478, 15479, 15480 Version 2 was issued to take account of the review of Motor Industry and Communication Skills standards. Standard 2323 expired and was replaced by 15475, 15478, 15479 and 15480 in the Heavy Commercial Vehicles Optional Strand (see table above). This, together with the addition of standard 15476, increased the credit total of the strand from 36 to 52. Other changes in the Compulsory section involved removing two standards and updating the prerequisites. The credit total for the qualification decreased from 111 to 107.
