Studying at Coolings School of Horticulture... Starting in May 2014 An Introduction to Garden Design (8 Weeks) Tutor: Alex Lindsay BA Hons, GD Dip Starts Thursday Evenings, 1 May, 6.30pm -9pm Cost: 175 This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and theories of garden design, and is perfect for gardeners who wish to have greater design skills for planning their own gardens. Throughout the eight weeks students will learn how to apply their ideas to paper. The course also includes lectures on designing with plants, using landscape materials and the history of garden design. Applicants are advised to have their own lightweight tabletop drawing board and some drawing materials. These are not essential at the start of the course and advice will be given as to appropriate materials. Short Courses (4 Week) Tutor: Neil Bone Tuesday Evenings, 6.30pm - 9pm Cost: 89 Propagation of Indoor Plants - Starts 27 May In this interesting and informed class you will learn how to care and cultivate a range of indoor plants, including their propagation and maintenance, in a fun, interesting and relaxed classroom environment. Twilight Gardening - Starts 23 September This interesting and informative garden style will turn your garden into a real living room, by using a range of luminescent, incandescent and reflective plants and foliage. You will learn about the designing of this gardening style including care, propagation and maintenance.

Garden Horizons: Plants, Scents and Senses (1 year) (A Leisure Learning Course) Tutor: Tessa Allen Starts Thursday 18 September, 9.30am -12.30pm or 1-4 pm. Cost: 585 New and exclusive to Coolings! Suitable for beginners or practising gardeners, this exciting and informative course covers a fascinating range of topics to delight all of your senses. Topics include edible plants, scent throughout the year and plant identification, as well as enjoying the sights and sounds of the wonderful gardens you will visit. Plants have not developed purely for our pleasure; be amazed to learn how insects see flowers, and that plants have feelings too! This course includes 10 full day visits to gardens and places of horticultural interest. The days of the visits will run from 9am - 4pm. The price includes all coach trips, but not entry to the gardens. Visits will include: Kew gardens, Anglesey Abbey, The Savill Garden and Sheffield Park. Garden Horizons - From Past to Present : A global look at plants (1 year) (A Leisure Learning Course) Tutor: Neil Bone Starts Friday 19 September mornings for 30 weeks Cost: 585 Exclusive to Coolings: written especially for Coolings customers! Suitable for beginners or practising gardeners, this exciting and informative course covers a fascinating range of topics: from historical origins of our vegetables and fruit, appreciating native trees, to current innovative designers and the latest growing methods used in the horticultural industry. This course includes 10 full day visits to gardens and places of horticultural interest. The days of the visits will run from 9 am - 4 pm. The price includes all coach trips, but not entry to the gardens. Visits will include: Beth Chatto s garden, Hatfield House gardens, Loseley, Wisley RHS gardens and Winkworth arboretum Topics to be covered include: Weekly plant identification forum Practical sessions on plant propagation Origin of our fruit and vegetable crops Designers and gardens of the 21st Century How plants defend themselves against pest and disease problems

How to be a Successful Gardener (1 Year) Tutor: Neil Bone Starts Saturday Mornings 20 September. Cost: 125 per module or 499 for all 5 modules This is a more practical, hands on, course than the RHS and is designed for people who have an interest in gardening and want to learn more. Divided into five modules, each of six weeks, the course covers everything from the basics of how to garden right up to some of the more controversial issues such as GM modification and pesticide use. Modules are three hours a week and are offered as individual courses so it will be possible to choose a module that you have a particular interest in or take all five modules over 30 weeks There will also be a practical element to each module to give real-life experience of most of the topics covered. The modules will cover: The basics of how to garden Gardening and your health Wildlife and gardening Growing your own vegetables The future of gardening Tessa Allen Neil Bone Starting in September 2014

RHS Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture Level 2 (2 Years) Tutor: Tessa Allen Starts Monday evening 22 September 6.30pm to 9pm Or Tuesday daytime 23 September 9.30am -12.30pm or 1-4pm. Cost: 499 per year (30 weeks) Just 3 hours a week, over 30 weeks, can gain you this nationally recognised award. We do recommend that you take the exams, but we do have a few students who decide to enjoy this purely as a leisure course. Both theory and practical elements of gardening are taught. This course is suitable for all keen gardeners regardless of experience. Topics to be covered include: Year 1 - Propagation Plant structure and growth Soil management Pest and disease problems Year 2 - Garden design Plant establishment and maintenance Greenhouse management Vegetable and fruit growing Each class includes: Plant identification Theory, with full well-written hand outs provided Practical demonstration Tea break with tea/coffee and biscuits provided

Coolings Diploma in Garden Design (2 Years) Tutor: Alex Lindsay BA Hons, GD DIP Starts Wednesday daytime 24 September 9.30am -12.30pm Cost: 585 This course covers similar content to the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Garden Design, but takes a more vocational hands on approach to equip students with experience and confidence. This course is the perfect combination of creative design and advanced plant and design knowledge and is the perfect foundation for a career as a garden designer. Applicants are advised to have their own drawing board and some drawing materials. These are not essential at the start of the course and advice will be given as to the appropriate materials. Short Courses (8 Weeks) Tutor: Tessa Allen Wednesday evenings, 6.30pm to 9pm Cost: 149 Autumn: Trees, Shrubs and Climbers; choosing, planting and maintenance Starts October 1 to November 26 2014 Spring: Borders and Pots; using and maintaining annuals and herbaceous perennials Starts January 21 to March 18 2015 Summer: Propagation; seeds and cuttings Starts April 29 to June 24 2015 Each of these courses will include lots of practical demonstrations, plenty of chances to ask questions and, where possible, for you to have a go. Gain the skills you need to become a more confident gardener.

One Day Lectures With Alex Lindsay Garden Design Lecturer Wednesdays 2pm to 4pm, Cost: 10 per person. How to Add Structure and Interest to Your Planting - 3 September The lecture will explore many planting styles and help inspire you with some ideas for your own garden. Ideas for Large Gardens - 10 September Whether you have just taken on a large site or have struggled with an existing one, this lecture will help cope with the challenge of where to start, and introduce some inspiring ideas. From Modernism to the Present Day - 17 September A brief history of those gardens and garden designers around the world that have inspired and changed the way we design our gardens. A Beginners Guide to Bonsai Tutor: Serge Tasic 1 or 5 Day Course From end April to end October daytime on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays (Please call to arrange exact dates) Cost: 1 day course 70 or 5 day course 299 Exclusive to Coolings! Many consider Bonsai to be a difficult art which requires knowledge and experience which takes years to learn. Our entertaining and gifted lecturer Serge Tasic will take you through a remarkable journey which will break through the myths of Bonsai and show you how simple it is to create beautiful plants in only five short days. Each student will have their own tree (only on the 5 day course) to work on and transform into their very own bonsai. Students will be required to buy some tools and other peripherals for the course and advice will be given on this during the first day.
