Music: Food for Thought How does listening to music or playing a musical instrument change us? Some people believe that music is like food for our minds and is important in helping us learn. Others say that they wouldn t be happy without their music. But does music really make us happy? Can it help us study better?. When our school decided to cut funding to our music program, we wanted to know the answers to these questions. We took 30 students, aged and, from our junior high school and divided them into three groups. Students in Group A were given piano lessons three times a week and students in Group B were given classical music to listen to while they did their homework. Group C were given neither musical lessons nor music to listen to. During the year, the teachers at our school carefully monitored how well the three groups did in their schoolwork and asked their parents to report on their behaviour at home.. The students who were given piano lessons achieved the best results. Out of the 0, eight of them got higher than average marks in their homework and end-of-term tests. Not surprisingly, the group who were given nothing at all didn t do any worse or better at school. However, the students who were given classical music to listen to actually got slightly lower scores on their homework. Perhaps the music distracted them from concentrating, or they preferred rock and roll. 3. We also asked parents to rate their children s level of happiness from one to 0 during the year. Once again, the students given piano lessons did best. Seven of their parents said that they seemed to be happier at home. Two of the parents did not notice any change. One couple said that their child seemed to be more unhappy, perhaps because the piano lessons were stopping him from playing baseball. The parents of the other students didn t notice any significant change in their children s behaviour. 4. One interesting result of the experiment was the effect of the piano lessons on a child s social life. Half of the parents of the children given music lessons noticed that they didn t spend as much time with their friends as before. They were enjoying the lessons so much they preferred to practise music. In contrast, the other two groups of children spent around the same amount of time with their friends. In conclusion, we believe that the results of our experiment show that music lessons are good for students: it makes us happier and helps us learn better. This is deþ nitely food for thought.
