1 The Good Old Days Level: 2º E.S.O. Grammar: Positive and negative descriptive adjectives. The simple past tense of the verb to be. There was / there were. The time. Functions: Describing past habits and routines. Describing places in the past and present. Vocabulary: means of transport. European cities. Phonetics: pronunciation of the /ju:/ sound. Pronunciation and intonation of questions and answers. This unit is about a holiday tour around Europe. The students will see some of the most important European monuments and museums. They will also work with a mix-up between the tour guide and one of the tourists. In the last part of the lesson they will read about some differences between modern times and the good old days. The structure of the unit is as follows: 1. Holiday tour: In this exercise, a character called Alexandra describes her journey around Europe, and the students must listen to the audio and write numbers one to five next to the names of the cities in the order she has visited them. 2. Famous places: Next, students must drag the pictures of the famous places to the names of the cities where they are. 3. Positive and negative: Here students must decide which of the adjectives are positive and which are negative, and drag them into the correct chart. 4. What's the word?: Now students must tidy up the letters given to rewrite the adjectives correctly. As extra help, they will see the initial letters of the words if they press the key icon. 1. The Louvre visit: This is a set of four exercises. a - Reading: First, students must read the text and decide the number of times they can see the past tense forms of the verb to be. b - True or False: Next, students must listen to the dialogue and decide if the statements are True or False. If they choose the wrong answer, the part of the text where they can find the answer will appear highlighted. c - Listening: In this exercise, students must listen to the dialogue and fill in the gaps with the words missing. These are all the past forms of the verb to be in the text.
2 d - Role-play: Finally a role play exercise. By clicking on the microphone icon a sound recorder interface will appear so that students can record their part of the dialogue in their own voice. They can repeat their recordings as many times as they want until they feel satisfied with their productions. When they have finished recording, they can listen to the whole conversation with the other character by clicking the Recap button in the final screen. 2. Where were they?: In this exercise, students must look at the pictures and click on the correct past form of the verb to be and on the correct time. They may click on the Help button to revise on how to tell the time. 3. Where were you?: Here, students must answer the questions about themselves as a guided writer. Once they have finished, they can choose to send their writing to their teacher (clicking on the button) or they can choose to print it (right-clicking on the text). 1. The Good Old Days: This exercise is made up of two parts: first, they must read a text where a character describes what Paris was like many years ago; then there is a second screen where students must listen to the dialogue and drag the words missing to the correct place. 2. A little bit of history: Here students must complete the sentences with there was(n t) and there were(n t) by dragging the expressions into the appropriate box. 3. Say it right: This is a phonetics exercise: students must click on the words to listen to them. Then they can record them imitating the pronunciation. They can record themselves as many times as needed and listen to their recordings later by clicking on the audio icons. 4. Phonetics game: In the last exercise of the unit students must click on the squares and match the words with their phonetic transcription by matching pairs in a traditional memory game. The squares disappear when words and symbols are matched.

Then I was in Berlin for a day. In Berlin the weather was cold. The Berlin Opera was great, and the beer was lovely. Then I was in Rome for four days. The Vatican was wonderful. The city was very nice but the traffic was awful. After Rome I was in Venice for two days. The hotel in Venice was awful but Saint Mark s Square was fantastic! Next, I was in London for three days. The weather in London wasn t very nice but the Underground was great and the people were nice. 1. The Louvre visit: a - Reading: Screen one: Tour Guide: Hello Alexandra. Alexandra: Good morning. Tour Guide: Where were you yesterday? Alexandra: Yesterday? Why? Tour Guide: We were all at the Louvre Museum. You weren t there. Alexandra: But the Louvre is today, right? Tour Guide: No. Today it s the Eiffel Tower. Alexandra: Oh dear. I was in my room all afternoon. Look the tour planner says.. ahh. Yes. You re right. The Louvre was yesterday. Screen two: Tour Guide: Yes. Do you know Mary, Alexandra? She is at your hotel too. Alexandra: Yes. Hi Mary. Was the Louvre good yesterday? Mary: Yes it was great. There was an exhibition of expressionist paintings. There were some fantastic paintings. Alexandra: Mmh. Were there many people? Mary: Oh yes. There were a lot of children. Alexandra: Children? Tour Guide: Yes. Yesterday was Wednesday. In France children get a special price on Wednesday at museums.

There was a documentary about the Eiffel Tower on the TV. Mary: Was the documentary good? Alexandra: Yes. It was wonderful. Tour Guide: OK. Well you can help me explain about the Eiffel Tower today. There weren t any cars on the streets but there were a lot of horses! He says those were the good old days.
