2013 UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Toscana - Italy From Sunday 22 nd to Sunday 29 th September 2013

Toscana, Italy Italy, and particularly the Tuscan Region, welcomes the 2013 UCI Road World Championships. The 2013 UCI Road World Championships routes travel through Florence, Lucca, Pistoia and Montecatini Terme, some of the most beautiful cities in Italy, rich in naturalistic and architectural treasures that helped build the region's decades-long cycling tradition. The organisers aim to pay tribute to the Tuscan cyclists who have written the history of cycling. Especially to Gino Bartali, prior to the celebrations for the centenary of his birth in 2014, and to Franco Ballerini, whose untimely passing left a deep void in the hearts of the Italians; and of course to Alfredo Martini, the honorary president and legendary coach of the national team. Men Elite Road Race : Sunday 29th September The Men Elite road race will cover a distance of 272km, with the start along the imposing medieval walls of Lucca the race will head east towards Firenze. The technically demanding point to point section will take in Montecarlo, famous for its wine & olive oil, as well Montecatini Terme, known for its Thermal Waters. The Route also takes in the breathtaking Tuscan scenery, as well as featuring the renowned climb of San Baronto, length of 5km metres and maximum gradient of 13%. After the climb the race will descend into a flat run into Firenze over the next 40km. Upon completing the 106km, the race will enter the circuit in Firenze. The finish circuit includes Fiesole and features two climbs. The first climb first climb of San Domenico rising above Florence to the hill top village of Fiesole, this 4.3km climb features an average gradient of 5.2% with a maximum of 9%. The second climb on Via Salviati is 600 metres in length with a 10% average grade with a sharp 16% max. The riders will complete 10 laps of the demanding circuit for the total race distance of 272km. Tuscany is a region on the west coast of Italy with an area of about 23,000 square kilometres (8,900 sq mi) and a population of about 3.8 million inhabitants. Tuscany is known for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy and its permanent influence on high culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science. As a result, the region boasts museums (such as the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace).
