Sewer Flow Testing, Smoke Testing and Manhole Inspection March, 2013

Primary Purposes of Study Determine Infiltration and Inflow Collect Field data about this area of the Collection System Start an Inventory of Manholes and other structures.

Study Area was Chickasaw Area of Homer Glen Area starting to see increases in growth Mid- 1970 s construction Can area sustain added growth on top of older infrastructure?

Project Divided into Three phases Flow Monitoring to detect I & I Smoke Testing to show infractions and areas needing remediation Manhole Inspection and Inventory

Phase I: Flow Monitoring Chosen to narrow down problem area. Map (next slide) shows area Flow Monitor 1 all flow will pass this point. Flow monitor 2 will monitor flow from North area into the larger area. Flow totals of monitors compared for analysis

Flow Monitoring set for anticipated wet Spring of 2005. 30 day initial study period Data collected from monitors twice each week. Rain gauge installed in area to monitor rain events. Flow totals of monitors compared to rain events for analysis

Flow Monitor #2 installed

Flow Monitor #2 installed Installed from street level with spring loaded ring inserted into upstream side of pipe. Sensor on ring measures depth of flow and velocity of flow Data collected by a data recorder over a set time period, then downloaded to laptop computer Software allows for data periods to be added in for total flow calculation

Flow Monitor #2 installed

Flow Monitor #1 installed Installed from street level with spring loaded ring inserted into upstream side of pipe. Needed extension on installation tool due to depth. (next slide) Sensor on ring measures depth of flow and velocity of flow This pipe is a 12 pipe.

Flow Monitor installation Had the manhole been much deeper, confined space equipment would have been needed. All precautions would have needed to be taken Always use experienced staff.

Preparing for entry into a manhole

Flow Monitoring Rain gauge used has recorder that uses the same programming as the flow monitors Uses a tipping bucket that records as little as.01 of rain. Easy to line up the timelines of each device for comparison

Flow Monitor Results 05 Spring did not have a lot of rainfall Study was extended another 30 days. One major rainstorm allowed for.91 inches in 24 hours and data showed some correlation of rainfall to increased flows in the Sanitary sewer.

Rain Gauge Results show spike on the 15 th to show start of project. No significant rainfall during time period. Rainfall amounts -- Scant rainfall indicated ------ Total Rainfall of 3.51 inches for 60 days

Flow Monitor Results on site # 2 Depth of flow Flow Velocity GPM Rain in Inches

Flow Monitor Results on site # 1 Depth of flow Flow Velocity GPM Rain in Inches

Flow Monitor Results No conclusive results to show increased flows with rain events on Monitor #2 No time period where rain amounts of over 1 in 24 hour period.

Site # 1 Flow Monitor Results Average flow level of 4.1 Flow Rate of 112 GPM throughout time period Shows Possible infractions of I & I.

Site # 2 Flow Monitor Results Average flow level of.05 Flow Rate of sporadic throughout time period Did not show possible infractions of I & I.

Flow Monitor Results Evidence did show on # 1 Monitor that there was some increase in flow with rain events This prompted further study by using Smoke Testing to locate Problem areas.

Phase II: Smoke Testing Total Length of pipe examined: 26,269 feet Non-Toxic liquid smoke used Neighborhoods notified by water bill mailer and door tagging area 48 hours ahead of testing Fire Department notified each day to prevent false calls

Phase II: Smoke Testing Program designed to check: Inflow from storm drain cross connections Roof Connections Faulty manholes Sewer Pipe problems Foundation Drains

Smoke Testing Procedure: Temporarily block off sewer pipe at lengths not exceeding 1000 feet Introduce smoke into sewer for no longer than 3-5 minute intervals. Photograph infractions and document event

Sewer Flow Monitoring, Smoke Testing, Manhole Inspections and Inventory Conclusions: The Flow Monitoring provided evidence of I & I. The Smoke Testing helped pinpoint the infraction locations The Manhole Inspection and Inventory provided a cost effective way to record the field data.
