12 Root Intrusion Thru 8 Truss Pipe Tap-In Repaired by Cook Brothers by cutting out a section of the Truss and relaying new SDR-26 PVC to manhole and installing a new Wye and reconnecting lateral. Roots came through the weakened Core-Tap Wall only.

21 Road collapse downstream of a Forcemain discharge manhole. This was an 18-inch RCP interceptor that was televised only 8 years earlier with typical corrosion for a 37- year old pipe. 18-inch RCP collapse outside of MH where 2 forcemains discharge.

37 WHAT STARTED OUT WITH 2 SMALL EXCAVATIONS TO RAISE UP THE PIPE, ENDED UP EXPOSING 90%. WE CHANGED THE SIZE OF THE CROSS-MEMBERS & WRAPPED CABLE AROUND THE PILINGS TO HOLD THE PIPE IN PLACE. REPAIRED DECEMBER 2012

54 What You Need To Start Your Manhole Rehabilitation Program As-Built drawings with specific manhole ID numbers Follow your Confined Space Program when entering manholes Digital Camera for documentation Checklist for manhole defects to categorize all aspects of the manhole Develop list of available contractors who can perform rehab where needed Historical data from upstream areas to help prioritize the manhole rehab Hydrogen sulfide levels if corrosion is evident Vendors who can supply you with what products you will need for the repairs Budget an annual amount of repairs and stick to it, be realistic Maintain an annual contact with your local road commission or DPW so you can stave off future problems like buried manholes from road projects Update your records whenever you rehab your system NAASCO has standards for manhole rehab if your facility needs them

58 No adjustment ring or cement used when casting was set, we discovered this one during the last 100-year rain event

59 Sometimes a casting is discovered missing...

60 ... that is until you look in the manhole. This storm manhole was made too wide for the casting and over time erosion allowed it to collapse into itself.

61 These adjustment bricks were discovered leaking during a 100-year storm event.

62 Let s see, mix Portland Cement with sand and gravel, except in this case the forgot the cement.

63 It wasn t enough to use cement blocks from a house that was torn down, but they used broken cement and asphalt for adjustments also.

64 This was the standard design for an external manhole drop pipe connection. Over time it separated and fractured the encased drop pipe.

65 High pressure gas main installed in through a storm manhole. Why? Note corrosion on side of gas piping. This was removed once the gas company became aware of this situation.

90 Manhole underwater in wetlands without inflow dish. We discovered vandals took it out and threw it over the hillside.

92 No-Flow In-Flow Dish in use We installed several hundred in key storm flow areas, as well as major intersection and around gas stations to stop any spilled petroleum products into the sewers. Our record is 3 for 3 on gas spills; and 2 for 2 in wetlands to prevent flooding into our manholes. Inexpensive, easy to install. Average life is about years depending on traffic conditions.
