5 Name Timeline and Timeline Activity 1513 - Juan Ponce de Leon claims the lands of Florida for Spain. 1564 - French Protestants found Fort Caroline in Florida. 1565 - Spanish forces establish St. Augustine, Florida, and massacre the French Protestants living at Fort Caroline. 1585 - The English establish a colony at Roanoke Island in North Carolina. The colonists of Roanoke disappear without a trace. England gives up trying to start a colony there. 1607 - Jamestown, Virginia, England s first successful colony, is established. 1619 - The first representative government in America, called the House of Burgesses, is started at Jamestown, Virginia. The first African slaves arrive in Virginia. 1663 - The King of England establishes the colony of Carolina and makes eight loyal friends its "Lord-Proprietors." 6a Vocabulary List Albemarle Sound - A large estuary area in North Carolina located between the mainland and Outer Banks, fed mainly by the Chowan and Roanoke Rivers. alligator - Reptile with sharp teeth and strong jaws that lives in many swampy areas of the Southeast. America's War for Independence - Same as the Revolutionary War. Atlantic Coastal Plain - A large area of mostly flat land that rises from the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. barge - A large flat-bottomed boat that is towed to transport freight. barrier islands - Low, narrow, sandy islands found along most of the Atlantic Coast, just a short distance from the mainland. bay - A body of water partly surrounded by land that opens into a larger body of water. border - The dividing line between two states or countries. boundary - The outermost limit of a state or country. Cape Canaveral - The place where the United States launches most of its rockets into outer space, located along the Atlantic coast of Florida. Chesapeake Bay - A long arm of the Atlantic Ocean that extends up through Virginia into Maryland and that is fed by many large rivers; the largest estuary system in the U.S. Civil War - A war between the Confederate States, which withdrew from the Union of states, and the other states of the Union (1861-1865). climate - The temperature, rain, snowfall, wind, etc., that are common in a certain region. coast - The land that is next to the sea. coastline - The outermost edge of the land along the coast. coastal plain - A general term for flat, low-lying land arising along a coast. colony - An area that is controlled by a distant country. Confederacy - The 11 southern states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee) that broke away from the United States in 1860-61. continent - One of the seven main land areas on Earth. The seven continents are Asia, North America, South America, Africa, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. coral reef - Unique underwater environments created by animals called corals that are places where many kinds of sea creatures live. delta - A fan-shaped piece of land, usually filled with many water channels found at the mouths of many rivers. Deltas are created from soil that has been carried downstream by the river. elevation - The altitude, or height, of land above sea level. estuary - An environment where salt and fresh water flow together that is loaded with the food materials eaten by shellfish. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary system in the United States. Everglades - A huge, swampy area of southern Florida. eye of the hurricane - A peaceful area in the center of a hurricane. flamingo - A wading bird found in tropical and sub-tropical regions such as southern Florida. Flamingos are extremely long legged, have pinkish or reddish feathers, and long, flexible necks. Florida Keys - A chain of small coral islands just to the south of the Florida peninsula that extend 150 miles to the southwest. Fort Caroline - An outpost in Florida founded by French Protestants in the year 1564, which was then destroyed a year later by Spanish Catholics. Fort Moultrie - The site of a famous Revolutionary War battle and the place where the Civil War began in 1861. It is just across the water from Charleston, South Carolina. Fort Sumter - The Union outpost in Charleston's harbor that was shelled by the rebel troops at Fort Moultrie. geography - The study of the Earth. Geographers map how the Earth's land, waters and political boundaries are arranged, as well as how its forests, animals, human beings, crops, etc., are distributed. Gulf of Mexico - The large body of water that lies to the west of the Florida peninsula. Gulf Coast - The coastal areas along the Gulf of Mexico. hurricane - A huge, powerful, swirling, late summer or autumn storm common in the southeast.

Jamestown - England's first successful colonial settlement founded along the banks of the James River in Virginia in 1607. lowland - An area of land that is lower than a nearby area. mainland - The principle land mass of a continent or any large area of land near a body of water. map - A flat representation of Earth or of a certain place on the Earth. There a many different types of maps. For example, a road map shows roads, cities, towns, and places of interest. A political map can show the borders between countries and states. A physical map can show such things as mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts, swamps, while a population map shows how many people live in certain areas. Mardi Gras - A French term meaning "Fat Tuesday." Mardi Gras is the last day before the Catholic period of fasting called Lent. Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans and throughout the south with feasts, parties, parades, and masquerade balls. Mississippi River - The longest river in the United States. Spanish moss - A plant that lives on trees in the southeast which hangs down from their branches in long strands. Native Americans - The people who lived in North and South America before Europeans arrived. oil-drilling platform - A huge construction made from metal used for drilling the oil located deep below the sea floor. Workers often live on oil-drilling platforms. Outer Banks - The sandy barrier islands off the mainland of North Carolina. palmetto trees - Small palm trees with fanned-shaped leaves commonly found in the southeast. The palmetto has been adopted as the "state tree of South Carolina." Pamlico Sound - A large estuary area in North Carolina fed mostly by the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. peninsula - An elongated piece of land that extends into a body of water. plantation - A large farm. Protestant - Religious group that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. example, the United States is usually divided into five or seven regions. Revolutionary War - America's War for Independence from Great Britain. Roanoke Island - Site of England's first attempt at colonization in North America, located off the mainland of North Carolina. sea level - The average level of the ocean's surface between low and high tide, which is used as a zero-point when measuring land elevation. shellfish - Edible water-dwelling creatures with hard outer parts such as clams, oysters, lobsters, and shrimp. sound - A long, wide body of water connected to a larger body of water. swamp - A lowland area that is covered with water for all or part of the year. tide - Tides occur due to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon and result in predictable daily changes in water level of the oceans. At low tide, the edge or the water is farther out than at high tide. tropical - Refers to hot, moist regions of the earth near the equator. tropics - The hot regions near the equator. wetlands - Swampy areas.
