Wifi Bridge Manual of operation (Hardware V 2.0, Firmware V 1.3) 2
Wifi Bridge Thank you for choosing the Wifi Bridge. The Wifi Bridge makes it possible to control lighting, electric blinds as well as other appliances by any smartphone, tablet and PC. The main features of the Wifi Bridge are: Included in delivery mainly used for configuration, but it can be used for normal operation, too. For easy configuration purposes Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) is supported as well, which connects the device to a network by a press of a button. Note: It is recommended to use WPA2 only mode, not WPA + WPA2. Especially on the FRITZ!Box router WPA + WPA2 mode can cause trouble with the effect that the Bridge cannot connect to the network. The package contains Setup by WPS Wifi Bridge 5V USB A/C adaptor USB cable of 1.8 m length Manual of operation Requirements To use the Wifi Bridge a Light-Manager is required. The Bridge is compatible with the Light-Manager Mini, Pro, Pro+ as well as the Light-Manager Pro and Pro+ for Bang & Olufsen. The Bridge will be placed next to the Light-Manager. The devices connect wirelessly by infrared, a cable is not necessary. The Light-Manager can still be controlled by an infrared remote control. The use of other remote controls, e.g. TV or Hi-Fi equipment, is not affected. Wi-Fi compatibility Wi-Fi protected setup is the easiest and most comfortable way to connect the Wifi Bridge to the network. It requires just a press of a button at the Wi-Fi access point and the Bridge. Please connect the Bridge to the AC adaptor with the included USB cable. After a few seconds the LED of the Bridge will flash 3x in blue which signals that the device is ready for operation. Now press the button of the Bridge. The LED will start blinking which means that it is waiting for the access point going into WPS mode. Now please press the WPS button of your access point. Some models don t have a physical button but a menu point for this purpose in the device s web interface. As soon as the Bridge has received a WPS signal the LED will change color to blue. After about 30 seconds the connection has been established and the LED will glow continuously in blue. (Consecutive connections will take about 2-3 seconds only.) That s it, the process is finished and the Bridge is part of your network. All further configurations like a static IP address or a different port can be done inside Lightman Studio under options -> Wifi Bridge. The bridge works with the Wi-Fi standard 802.11 g (54 Mbit) and supports 802.11 b/g, b/g/n and n/g networks. The encryption types WEP, WPA, WPA2 are supported, as well as open networks. Additionally the Bridge supports Virtual Access Point mode, which is a router-less direct connection between devices. Virtual Access Point mode is 3 4
Setup by Virtual Access Point Another way to do the setup of the Bridge is the virtual access point mode. After startup the Bridge will automatically create its own Wi-Fi network called Wifi Bridge for this purpose. Remove the USB cable from the Bridge Press the button of the Bridge and keep it holding Attach the USB cable to the Bridge Keep holding the button for about 10 seconds until the LED flashes blue a second time Any PC or laptop with a Wi-Fi card can connect to this network. After this is done the Bridge will be listed in Lightman Studio under options -> Wifi Bridge. Now all parameters like SSID (network name), security type and password can be entered and transmitted to the Bridge by pressing the Set button. Shortly afterwards the Bridge should be found by Lightman Studio again, this time with an IP address of your home network. You can monitor this process in the log screen. Tip: The virtual access point mode allows to use the Wifi Bridge without any access point. For this purpose just connect your smartphone or tablet with the Wifi Bridge in virtual access point mode. Only one device at a time can be used this way. The Bridge will be available under the IP address 192.168.100.100. Reset Wifi Bridge to defaults To clear all settings and reset the Bridge to default please perform as follows: Remove the USB cable from the Bridge Press the button of the Bridge and keep it holding Attach the USB cable to the Bridge Keep holding the button for about 2 seconds until the LED flashes blue Uploading the web interface Setup by open network Another method to do the setup of the Wifi Bridge is using an open Wi-Fi network. For this purpose set the security mode of your network to open temporarily. Each time after startup the Bridge searches for an open network and connects to it automatically As soon as this is done the Bridge can be configured with in Lightman Studio under options -> Wifi Bridge. To upload your personal web interface to the Bridge please select the web interface tab within Lightman Studio under options -> Wifi Bridge. A click on the big button will start uploading the data to the bridge. After a few seconds this process is finished and the Bridge is ready to use. Activation of Bang & Olufsen mode By default the Bridge works in standard infrared mode. The B&O mode is enabled automatically as soon as the web interface has been transferred the first time. To manually enable the B&O mode, e.g. to get log screen output from startup, please perform as follows: 5 6
To open the interface it is sufficient to click on the browser button. This starts the default browser and opens up the index page of the web interface. On smartphones and tablets just enter the IP address of the Bridge in the address bar. We recommend adding a bookmark to this site, so you don t have to enter the IP address again. Most devices including Android and ios allow putting a bookmark icon on the desktop. This brings the same level of comfort to the web interface as a traditional app. Dependent on your launcher it is even possible to select the icon for this bookmark. Authentication To increase security of the web interface you can assign a username and password optionally. For this purpose just enter this data on the same tab in Lightman Studio. Finally press the start button again to upload the modified data. From now on the browser will ask for username and password before access to the interface is granted. Most browsers allow saving this data, so you don t have to enter it each time. The log screen To get detailed status information from the Bridge there is the log screen. This will be opened automatically when you select options -> Wifi Bridge within Lightman Studio. The data shown in the log screen is not transferred by network, but by infrared from the Bridge to the Light-Manager. For this purpose the Light-Manager has to be connected to the PC and the Bridge has to be placed near the Manager. With help of the log screen connection problems can be analyzed. Also the current IP address of the Bridge as well as other informations will be shown there. Access over the Internet It is possible to access the Wifi Bridge from virtually all over the world when an Internet connection is available. So you could turn on your coffee machine from the office already for example. In case you should forget this data the Bridge will show it on startup in the log screen. All data including the network security parameters are stored in the Bridge permanently, even after power loss. For this purpose forward port 80 in the settings of your router to the bridge. The target IP address has to be the address of the Wifi Bridge shown in Lightman Studio. For test purposes you can disable Wifi in your smartphone and enter the IP address you got from the ISP. With a little delay the web interface should show up if a GSM or UMTS connection is available. 7 Most DSL lines use dynamic IPs. This means that the IP address will change daily. To keep access to your web interface anyway you will need a so called DynDns account. 8
There are certain providers which offer this service free of cost. A well known provider is www.no-ip.com for example. There you get a URL like myhouse.no-ip.com under which the interface is reachable all time. Another well known provider is www.dyndns.org. Unfortunately they started charging a yearly fee, but the service quality is excellent. Modification of the web interface Shortly more detailed information will be presented in our FAQ how to modify the web interface. Here are some basic information to begin with. The template for the creation of the interface is stored in the /html folder of the Lightman Studio installation. When pressing the start button Lightman Studio loads the template and generates the customized interface based on the currently loaded configuration. The result is stored in the %appdata%/lightman Studio/html_temp folder before it is compressed and uploaded to the Bridge. In contrast to the template the /html_temp folder contains all light scenes, zones and actuators. If you want to modify the interface we recommend to create a copy of the /teml_temp folder after the first upload and store it in a different folder. Now the HTML and CSS files can be altered by the user. Lightman Studio offers the possibility to select a source folder for the web data. Here you select your newly created folder and from now on this will be used when uploading data to the Bridge. Firmware-Update The Wifi Bridge supports firmware updates. It can be expected that more functions will be added to the Bridge in course of time. For this purpose there is the tab firmware update in the Wifi Bridge options of Lightman Studio. In most cases the update can be done over-the-air. In case this process does not work properly, maybe because UDP traffic is restricted in your network, you can attach the Light-Manager and the bridge to the PC. Then the log screen will show detailed information during the update procedure and it should be possible easily to find out where it hangs. ios und Android App There are ios and Android apps available for the Wifi Bridge. In the itunes Store you find the app LiteConnnect. This app is specially made for the Wifi Bridge and is offered for EUR 4.49. For Android there is the app ImperiHome. This can be found in the Google Playstore. ImperiHome is offered for free currently. Information for developers In the web space of the bridge there is a file called config.xml. This includes all zones, light scenes and actuators, together with strings for all commands available for each actuator and light scene. It is sufficient to send a http-request with this string to the Bridge in order to execute a command or to trigger a light scene. So you can easily create your own software resp. app to control the Bridge. More detailed information can be found shortly in the FAQ section of your homepage. 9 10
Trouble shooting Technical data If the Wifi Bridge does not connect to a specific network mostly one of the following reasons are the cause: Supply voltage: 5 Volts 1. The 802.11 g mode has not been activated. Please check if a compatible mode has been selected in your access point (e.g. 802.11 b, b/g, b/g/n or n/g). 2. The access point is set to channel 12 or 13. Please select a channel in the range of 1-11. 3. The network security does not match the settings stored in the Bridge. We recommend using pure WPA2. Power consumption: ca. 0.35 Watts Dimensions: ca. 6 x 6 x 2 cm Wifi types: Infrastructure and ad-hoc Wifi standards: 802.11 g Wifi channels: 1-11 Security: Open, WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPS for easy setup 4. If WPS setup fails please check if Wifi protected setup has been enabled in your access point, and especially if the push button mode is also enabled. 5. If the Wifi Bridge is not found by Lightman Studio although it has been connected to the Wi-fi network successfully, then in most cases this is caused by anti-virus software or the Windows firewall. Please first deactivate the anti-virus software temporarily and afterwards the firewall if necessary during setup. Memory: 2 Megabyte flash memory for the web interface Infrared frequencies: 38 khz and 455 khz (B&O) Supported operating systems of the Lightman Studio software: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and 8 Enjoy the new level of comfort the Wifi Bridge brings to your home in conjunction with the Light-Manager. jbmedia Dreherstrasse 24 42899 Remscheid Germany 11 12
