TOPCONS (Transboundary tool for spatial planning and conservation of the Gulf of Finland) Lead partner: Kotka Maritime Research Association Partners : GTK / Southern Finland Office, Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), University of Helsinki, Metsähallitus (MH) Finland, Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute (RKTL), Interdisciplinary Expert group, St.Petersburg Research center of Russian Academy of science (RAS), Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU), A.P.Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI) Russia St.Petersburg Associates: Committee for nature use, environmental protection and ecological safety of St.Petersburg; Committee of state control of nature use & ecological safety of the government of Leningrad province Total budged: 1 716 755 The aim of the project is to produce a marine spatial planning tool for decision making in an international, national and regional level. New knowledge on spatial geological and biological diversity in the area will, for the first time, be combined with societal aspects including legislative requirements and the values of stakeholders. The resulting interactive planning tool will be easy to operate and it can utilise the most current information available as the nature inventory work processes and the level and type of human activities are continuously changing in the Eastern Gulf of Finland. 6 Keijo Nenonen 22.10.2010
Mining Road Development of a new type of tourist activity scientific and educational tourism based on the monuments of mining and geological profile Lead Partner: Institute of Geology, Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institutionof the Russia Academy of Science Partners: Geological Survey of Finland, Mining museum of Outokumpu, Administration of the Pryazha national municipal district Karelian Regional State Museum Petroskoi, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Karelia and 11 Associated Partners from the Republic of Karelia and Finland Total budget: 797 000 Project duration: 36 months
Why GTK is involved in nature tourism? The Finnish nature is very important factor in nature tourism We can admire nature sites, but often there is lack of information/ knowledge about the origin of site Tourism is important to municipalitys and nature turism companies New possibilities in information technology The best national and local geological competence Good cooperation possibilities in with other partners eg. universities, surveys, Positive feedback from the audience 8
Geology gives to nature tourism Geology is the basis of landscape. Geology gives a experential approach to nature Geology brings with it the concept of time - past and future. Geology is an important key to the natural entities to understand Geology provides a good supplement tourism and educational services. Kuva:Ilkka Laitakari, GTK 9

Activities in the first six month period 21.4.-31.10.2012 Project is going on according the planned schedule. Activity 2 / Task 6 Project work started with preliminary studies and inventory planning. It was continued with collecting and inventing the existing mining historical and also suitable geological data from the project area (North Karelia). The selected mining historical and geo-sites were investigated on field terrain. The sites were documented by notes and photos. The position of the sites were located by GPS and plotted on maps. Also history of the sites were studied by internet web addresses and during the visits. This work is going on 16
Activities in the first six month period 21.4.-31.10.2012 Activity 2 / Task 7 The data and sites were plotted on maps with ArcMap program and stored in named computer files and folders. Data and photos of the selected sites were stored in digital archives. Slide shows about the mining history, sites, and GTK s task in the project was produced for the presentations in seminars and meetings. Activity 6/ Task 30 GTK Mining Road project staff took part in the kick-off seminar of the project in Outokumpu and in the meetings with representatives of leading partner in Kuopio. 17
