2 Sitra = Focus on the future Our task is to promote Finland s economic growth in terms of both quality and quantity stable and balanced development international competitiveness and co-operation Act on Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund (717/1990) An independent societal game changer Sitra is a fund operating directly under the Finnish Parliament. Our operations are funded from our returns on endowment capital and capital investments. As an independent societal actor, we bring together and train experts of various levels, to seek exploitable solutions to systemic challenges, even at international level. Weanticipatechanges and their effects on Finns. We try out new operating models and accelerate business activities aimed at generating sustainable well-being. We impact on societal structures and promote changes that increase well-being.

4 Intent The mining industry and its stakeholders create a FinnishNetwork for Sustainable Miningwith the support of Sitra. The network, built on cooperation and trust, promotes more responsible practices for mines in Finland based on international approaches. Sustainable mining takes into account other economic activities, cultures, society and the environment. Open and balanced dialogue Active and constructive cooperation Tools: indicators, management and evaluation systems Voluntary No lobbying regarding legislation or legal enforcement No statements regarding existing local conflicts of interest

6 Statement of Intent We commit to working together within the Network for Sustainable Mining. The aims of the Network are to: develop an open, balanced and continuous dialogue and co-operation between the mining industry and its stakeholders, and; promote the development of more responsible, sustainable and predictable mining practices in Finland. The Network serves as a forum for discussion and co-operation between the mining industry and its stakeholders. It develops and customizes various tools for application in the Finnish operating environment, in order to enable more responsible and sustainable mining practices. The Network's co-operation activities and operations in general will be based on the following principles, to which we hereby commit: compliance with the law promoting mining practices that are responsible and ecologically, socially and economically sustainable throughout the life cycle of a mine transparent information on mining activities engagement in genuine dialogue with stakeholders, for example to settle any conflicts of interest in advance and take into account the operational needs of other economic activities protection and conservation of biodiversity; management of environmental and social impacts systematic and comprehensive risk management ensuring the well-being of employees and promoting employment protecting cultural heritage respecting the special rights of the Sámi people. Statement of Intenthas been signed by 8 stakeholders (out of 12)

9 Current Status Launched late May with 15 different members Support by Sitra until 7/2015 Four working groups Sitra supports the working groups and has commissioned studies oe.g. mapping of R&D projects related to responsible mining & comparative study of international responsible mining standards Regular meetings Trust is building up and the discussions are good and fruitful Successful first public seminar on 13th of August
