1 USB232CONV Introduction The USB to serial converter USB232CONV is based upon the FT232BM chip by FTDI (http://www.ftdichip.com). With the installed driver you can either operate the converter as a virtual com port (VCOM) or you can directly access the FTDI 232BM chip used in the converter cable (D2XX). The latter way is mainly intended for users who want to access the chip via the delivered program library (Dynamic Link Library or DLL). The new driver architecture combining functionality of D2XX and VCP drivers since version 2.02.00. So you doesn't need two different driver any more if you running an Windows 2000, XP or Vista machine. 1 USB232CONV Introduction 1

2 Virtual COM Port After the installation of the virtual COM port driver the converter can be accessed as a normal COM port. Since the converter is fully compatible to the RS232 standard, all programs, communicating through the serial interface, can be used together with the USB232CONV. Furthermore this converter offers noticably higher transmission rates as usual RS232 interfaces. Additionally it is ESD ±15kV protected and short circuit proof. 2.1 Windows XP Installation of the Virtual COM Port Driver (VCOM) To install the virtual COM port you need administrator rights! If Windows service pack 1 SP1 is installed on your PC you should break an active internet connection before the installation. The reason is: If an active internet connection is available Windows automatically contacts (without you noticing it) the Windows Update Website and installs all available drivers for this converter. With Windows service pack 2 SP2 this procedure is not necessary since the installation assistent asks you where the drivers shall be loaded from. Double click in the system control onto the symbol Network connections and deactivate the connection with a right click. As soon as the driver is installed you can reactivate the internet connection by the same procedure. Plug the cable into any USB port of you PC to start the hardware assistent which will help you installing the new hardware. If SP2 is installed you will be asked if Windows shall search the net for new drivers. Negate this question by clicking onto 'No, not this time'. Click on 'Next'. In the following dialog select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click on 'Next'. For the driver selection mark the entry Search for the best driver in these locations and select Include this location in the search:. Click on the 'Next' button. Enter the letter of your CDROM drive (if you did not yet insert the Driver CD you should do it now). 2 Virtual COM Port 3
2 Virtual COM Port Select the folder CDROM:\driver\win2k_xp_vista\cdm and click onto 'OK'. Afterwards click onto 'Next' to start the installation of the driver from CDROM. Sometimes you get the warning that the driver failed the Windows Logo Test (not WHQL certified). This message can be safely ignored. Click on 'Continue anyway' to finally install the driver. 4 2 Virtual COM Port
2 Virtual COM Port The hardware assistent now copies all necessary drivers from the CDROM to your system. As soon as this procedure is finished you get the message to end the installation. Click on 'Finish' to finally end the installation process. If the hardware assistent starts again after the end of installation (this can sometimes happen, it is a Windows problem) you have to run the procedure once again. Fortunately the assistent keeps the search path so that the second installation process will be quicker since you can mostly answer the questions with 'Proceed' or 'OK'. The converter is finally ready for use when Windows displays the message that the new hardware can now be used. You can check this by clicking on System control and System. Select 'hardware' and 'device manager' to open the device manager. The device manager lists all available and registered devices. The converter is a USB device, therefore you can find it under USB?Controller. Accordingly you also find an entry under 'USB?Controller'. Since it is a simulation of a COM port you can also find it under 'COM and LPT' 2 Virtual COM Port 5
2 Virtual COM Port 2.2 Deinstallation of Windows XP Virtual COM Port Driver To deinstall the COM port driver you have to do the following: Remove the USB to serial converter from your PC (unplug) Open the System control and click on the symbol Software Search for FTDI USB Serial Converter Driver in the software list and click on the 'Change/Remove' button. 3 Direct access using the D2XX mode The operation of the serial data analyser MSB A at the USB port mandatory presumes the use of the D2XX mode. Software developers, who wants to get access to all capabilities of the FT232BM chip, will also be interested by running the USB232CONV in the D2XX direct access mode. Because since version 2.02.00 the VCOM and D2XX mode are covered by the same (combi) driver, you doesn't need an additional driver installation.
