Puławy flourished when Princess Izabela Czartoryska created an important centre of political, intellectual, cultural and artistic life, often called the "Polish Athens", at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. In 1801 the Princess established the first museum in Poland, where she collected valuable national relics. The tradition has been continued by the Czartoryski Museum, open in 2009. It was the oak table, retained until now in the palace in Puławy, on which the Marshal Józef Piłsudski developed a strategy for the Warsaw Battle which ended with victory on 15 August 1920 and which was a breakthrough for the future of Europe. The form of present-day Puławy has been influenced by a decision taken in 1960 on establishing a huge chemical industrial complex.
