Martin AAHRNE PTNSS-2012-SS1-133 Regional swedish biogas production experiences and growth scenarios The paper presents biogas production in Sweden based on the three examples of the plants producing biogas from various types of substances: biogas manufactured from the animal dung at the Katrineholm plant, biogas manufactured from the sewer sediment at the Käppala plant in Stockholm as well as biogas from the food production waste at the VATAB Milijö, Västerås plant. It also shows the numbers of the biogas production plants and biogas enhancement plants bringing its quality up to that of the natural gas in Sweden, together with the references to the manufacturing and processing capacities of those plants. Swedish scenarios for the biogas (bio-methane) production increase in the region of the StockholmCity, have been presented as well as the proposal of the production increase system and biogas application in the region of Biogas Öst. Zaprezentowano liczbę biogazowni i instalacji uszlachetniania biogazu do jakości gazu ziemnego w Szwecji wraz z odniesieniem do mocy wytwórczych i przerobowych tych instalacji. Przedstawiono szwedzkie scenariusze wzrostu produkcji biogazu (biometanu) w regionie Sztokholmu. Zaprezentowano również propozycję systemu zwiększania produkcji i stosowania biogazu w regionie BiogasÖst. COMBUSTION ENGINES, No. 1/2012 (148)

Biogas from manure in Katrineholm, Sweden Swedish Biogas International Katrineholm AB Owned by Swedish Biogas International AB (51 %) and local farmers (49 %) Pant started in September 2010 Estimated amount of processed material is 70,000 metric tonnes/year Predicted to produce 3 million Nm 3 of upgraded biogas per year Predicted to produce 60,000 metric tonnes of bio-fertilizer per year The biogas produced reduces CO 2 emissions with 13,000 metric tonnes/year. www.balticbiogasbus.eu 4
Biogas from sewage slugde Käppala waste water treatment plant in Stockholm The third largest waste water treatment plant in Sweden Two digestion chambers with a total volyme om 18 000 m 3 Produces 6,5 million Nm 3 raw biogas annually Started upgrading 2010 and has signed a long term contract with SL Currently producing biogas enough to fuel 45+ buses The biogas produced reduces CO 2 emissions with 13,000 metric tonnes/year. www.balticbiogasbus.eu 5
Biogas from food waste VAFAB Miljö, Västerås 60 % of all household waste in the region is collected Munucipalities responsible for collecting the waste, VAFAB Miljö AB take care of the collected waste and digest and upgrade the biogas Started to biogas upgrading in 2005 KRAV-certified digestion residue www.balticbiogasbus.eu 6
