1 FROM NEARBY AIRPORTS TO TRIESTE CITY 1.1 TRS TRIESTE RONCHI DEI LEGIONARI It is the nearest airport to Trieste, although not so many companies operate on it. The website is http://www.aeroporto.fvg.it. When landed, the unexpensive choice to reach Trieste is represented by catching the bus: located near the Exit there is an APT blue ticket machine (see Figure 1). Touch the screen to choose the suburban routes and then touch the arrows to choose the TRIESTE aut. roiano - barco destination. The one-way ticket costs 3,50. Figure 1: Trieste Ronchi Airport 3
1 The bus stop is located outside the Exit doors, one hundred meters to the right. The bus, grey and blue coloured, leaves approximately» Tip: choose a seat located on the right side of the coach to enjoy the seasight. every 30 minutes. Please, be careful to catch the 51 Trieste bus (unfortunately, there exists also the 51 Udine bus, but they are not equivalent: their destinations are opposite). After one hour journey along the panoramic road of the Costiera (the coastal road), you arrive to the Trieste bus station, which stands near the Trieste Centrale train station, in Piazza della Libertà ( Freedom Square). A more expensive solution is to catch a taxi (Consorzio Taxi Aeroporto FVG, phone +39 481 778000) to reach the Monfalcone train station and then to wait for the first train directed to Trieste Centrale. 1 1.2 VCE VENICE/VENEZIA TESSERA MARCO POLO After landing in Venice airport, the nicest solution is to reach Venice by bus and enjoy the Santiago Calatrava Constitution Bridge which allows to reach the train station, leaving to Trieste. Just in front of the Venice airport baggage belts, or outside the airport, there are some blue ticket machines (ACTV Biglietteria automatica ) where with 8,00 one can buy the line 5 bus ticket. Alternatively, outside the baggage area one can find the ACTV» Timetable and route: http://www.actv.it/pdf/urban o/u-5.pdf http://www.actv.it/pdf/urban o/mappe/5-um.pdf Biglietteria HelloVenezia. The line 5 bus stop is located outside the main exit and the orange colored coaches start approximately every 15/20 minutes. After a 25 minutes journey, the bus ends its service in Venice, Piazzale Roma. In Venice, after having crossed the Calatrava bridge and found the train station, one should ask for a ticket directed to Trieste Centrale. There are various kind of trains arriving to Trieste: the cheapest are Figure 3: an obliteratrice the regional ones (Regionale); more expensive are the Intercity, the FrecciaBianca and the FrecciaArgento. All of them are operated by Trenitalia company, and it is possible to buy the ticket directly on www.trenitalia.com. To avoid any sort of trouble remember in such a case to print the ticket on an A4 sheet. Otherwise, if you buy a train ticket within the rail station, do not forget to validate it before approaching the train by the obliteratrici (ancient medieval-latin word) located inside the station (see Figure 3). After a two-hour journey you will reach the Trieste station (see Figure 2). 5
1 Other bus to reach the Piazzale Roma square in Venice are operated by the express service of ATVO. One can purchase tickets inside the Venice Marco Polo Airport from the white and blue automatic ticket machine in the arrivals baggage hall, or in the ATVO ticket office in the arrivals hall, box n. 79 and n. 80, or by automatic ticket machines located outside the airport, in the ATVO departure bays: http://www.atvo.it/?lang=en&area=23&menuid=35 Another possible solution is to proceed from airport to Mestre rail station, but the station is not appealing at all. Both ACTV and ATVO offer bus transfer to Mestre: anyway, we do not recommend such a solution. 1.3 VRN Verona Villafranca Valerio Catullo Despite its considerable distance from Trieste, the Verona Villafranca Airport is reached by many companies (website http://www.aeroportoverona.it). The Aerobus service from the airport to the Verona Porta Nuova train station runs every 20 minutes, every day of the week. At the train station, one can buy a ticket as indicated within the previous subsection. 1.4 LJU Ljubljana Brnik Despite its proximity to Trieste, it is still difficult to reach the city from Ljubliana Brnik airport if you do not use a car. The possibility to exploit the buses relies on a unique solution leaving from the Ljubljana Avtobusna Postaja (bus station) at 06:25 AM and reaching Trieste at 08:56 AM (see Figure 2). 6
2 FROM THE TRIESTE BUS AND TRAIN STATIONS TO THE SAVOIA MEETING HOTEL When arrived, by train or by bus, in Piazza della Libertà (Figure 2), there are still 1500 meters to cover (see Figure 4) in order to arrive at the Hotel Savoia Excelsior, in Riva del Mandracchio 4 (http://savoiaexcelsiorpalace.starhotels.com). Figure 4: From Piazza della Libertà to the Meeting hotel 7
2 2.1 ON FOOT Leave to your left the Piazza della Libertà with her trees and her many bus stops (see Figure 5) and proceed along the noisy and traffic congested Corso Cavour. After a couple of minutes of walk, the scenery becomes more and more attractive, with many neoclassical palaces at your left side and the Northern Adriatic sea on your right. Passed along the unforgettable Piazza Unità, in three minutes you reach the Hotel. Figure 5: From Piazza della Libertà to the Meeting hotel 2.2 BY BUS Inside the Trieste Centrale train station, just near the exit doors and close to the ticket office ( Biglietteria ) there is a Tobacconist (see Figure 6). There one can ask for a biglietto del bus, the bus ticket, which costs 1,25 and allows to exploit all the Trieste Trasporti buses for sixty minutes (Orario intera rete - 60 minuti). If you plan to use again the 8
2 buses during your stay, or you move with colleagues or other Figure 6: a tobacconist sign persons, consider the possibility to buy a 10 trips ticket (Intera rete pluricorse - 60 minuti) for 11,25. Please note that, unfortunately, it is not possible to buy a ticket asking directly to the bus driver. The ticket has to be validated inside the bus by means of the obliteratrici (similar to those of Figure 3). The bus joining directly the stations to the hotel is the number 8. The bus stop is located in Viale Miramare, i.e. in the northern corner of Piazza della Libertà (see Figure 7). You hop-off the bus after having passed the impressive Piazza Unità, and cross the Rive at the traffic light. 2.3 BY TAXI To call for a taxi use the number + 39 40 307 730. Aside the train station, along Viale Miramare, there is a taxi parking. As a matter of fact, it could be difficult to find free taxies when arriving by train during the night or in rainy days. Ask for the Hotel Savoia and in a couple of minutes you will be arrived, with an approximate 8,00 expense. Figure 7: Viale Miramare, taxi parking and number 8 bus stop 9
3 DIRECTLY TO THE SAVOIA MEETING HOTEL BY CAR Before driving, check to have onboard snow chains or snow tyre. Either coming from italian motorway A4 or from slovenian A1 (through the Sežana - Fernetti former borderline, holding the right side of the road), follow on the toll-free motorway RA13 the green traffic signals for Trieste port. After some tunnels the road continues on flyover structures. Proceed without leaving the motorway till the last exit (Centro / Porto / Passeggio S. Andrea). Figure 8: End of motorway. Turn left to Passeggio Sant Andrea Proceed straight along the alley of Passeggio Sant Andrea and Via di Campo Marzio to arrive on the Rive.
