car2go San Diego Parking Rules and FAQs 1. WHERE CAN I END MY TRIP? ONLY END YOUR TRIP IN AUTHORIZED PARKING LOCATIONS When finished, you may leave your car2go in any Authorized Parking Location within the Home Area. Authorized parking locations include: Public street parking with no City signage/restrictions Any parking meter or pay station that is 1 Hour or more Any specially marked carshare parking spot Note: Unless San Diego is separated from California in an earthquake, you must adhere to bylaws set forth in the California Vehicle Code when parking your car2go. 2. WHERE SHOULD I AVOID PARKING WHEN ENDING MY TRIP? When parking, there are specific areas to avoid. Do NOT end your trip in any of the following areas: Parking meter or time restricted zones that are less than 1 Hour These curb colors are not for you: Green, yellow, white, red, or blue Parking lots (private, public or paid) Time restricted areas and/or commuter lanes Areas that become time restricted, tow-away or street sweeping zones within the next 24 hours of ending your trip Underground parkades Private property (driveways, garages, or parking lots even if it s your own space) Commercial zones, Loading zones, Valet, Taxi, or Bus zones Disabled drivers parking spots Reserved parking spaces (that are NOT car2go) Do NOT end your trip at the San Diego International Airport
When parking, do NOT park: Perpendicularly no front or back tires against the curb. Even though the car will fit, it is illegal in California. All vehicles must be parked so that both right tires are within 18 of the curb Reverse angled (unless directed to by the parking signage) Note: The associated cost of a driving and/or parking infraction will be charged to the responsible party s account. A $100 fee will be charged to the responsible party if the vehicle is relocated due to being parked in violation of San Diego car2go parking guidelines. 3. CAN I LEAVE THE HOME AREA? Yes, you may leave and return to the Home Area with sufficient vehicle charge, but you will not be able to end your usage of the car2go until it is returned to the Home Area. Your trip fee will continue to accrue until the vehicle is returned to an authorized parking location inside the Home Area. 4. WHEN SHOULD I USE THE STOPOVER FUNCTION? The stopover function is used when you want to park and make sure you have a vehicle at a later time. You must take the keys with you and lock the door. If you are outside of the Home Area and need to park the car the stopover option must be used. You will be charged for the time you keep your trip open while in stopover. 5. DO I NEED TO PAY TO PARK AT METERS? Not at meters that are 1 hour or more. Meters with less than one hour (15 min, 30 min, etc.) must be avoided when ending your trip. You may share a metered space with another car2go, as long as both vehicles are within the marked guidelines You may NOT share a metered space that is occupied by a non-car2go vehicle 6. ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS FOR EVENT PARKING? Yes, you must adhere to posted time or tow away restrictions relating to any special event. 7. CAN I END MY TRIP IF A RESTRICTION COMES INTO EFFECT WITHIN 24 HOURS? No, not if the vehicle could be cited or towed within the NEXT 24 hours. If the car2go is cited or towed, the associated fees belong to the responsible party. Fees may also be assessed if car2go must relocate the vehicle to prevent a ticket or towing. Street sweeping times (no parking) are posted on a street sign at the beginning of the street, and on parking meters. Street sweeping is never on both sides of the street at the same time.
Avoid parking during these restricted times 24 hours in advance of the posted time Often, vehicles are parked late at night, with street sweeping taking place early the following morning. Leaving your car2go here will result in a citation. 8. CAN I PARK IN RESTRICTED SPACES? No. When completing your trip, restricted spaces such as handicapped, commercial, loading, valet, taxi, and bus zones should not be used for parking a car2go. 9. HOW DO I END MY TRIP AT A CHARGING STATION? If you choose to end your trip at one of the charging stations listed on our navigation screen, the vehicle must be plugged in and charging before the trip is ended. If there are no charging stations available, the vehicle must be relocated to valid on-street parking. You are not required to end your trip at a charging station. Below are some tips for charging: Take the cable from the charging station Connect the cable to the car2go by placing it into the charge port (behind the fuel door) Activate the charging station by holding the car2go fob (on your car key) in front of the charging station s reader for a few seconds. The status should read Charging. Replace key and end your trip. UNPLUGGING Press the button on the charging cable plug Unplug the charging cable from the car Hang the cable back on the charging station 10. WHERE CAN I END MY TRIP NEAR SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY? Parking is available on campus lots A, C, D, E, T, U, V and X. You may end your trip in the G lot, but vehicles must be plugged in and charging at 1 of the 6 designated charging stations. Trips must be ended in student spaces only (no Faculty/Staff).
11. CAN I END MY TRIP AT THE AIRPORT? No. You can pick up and drop off someone at the airport, or put the car in stopover mode if you need to need to go into the airport. A trip cannot be started or ended at the airport as this is outside of our Home Area. The nearest airport parking is across from Terminal 2 at Spanish Landing charge stations. This is about a 10 minute walk across Harbor Drive at the stop light with a crosswalk. 12. CAN I PARK AT FASHION VALLEY MALL? No. Trips cannot be ended in mall parking lots, but can be put in stopover mode in the parking lot. The nearest public street parking by Fashion Valley mall is on the North side of Friars Rd across from Nordstrom. 13. CAN I PARK AT SEA WORLD? No. Sea World is a paid parking lot, so a trip can only be put in stopover mode here and the charges would continue until the vehicle is returned to public street parking. 14. CAN I DRIVE BETWEEN SAN DIEGO AND LOS ANGELES? The electric vehicles have a range of about 70 miles on a full charge, and take up to six hours to re-charge at a public charge station. This will not be enough to reach LA. All trips must end in the same Home Area they started in- that is you cannot start a trip in one car2go city and end it in another.
15. I PARKED INCORRECTLY OR LEFT SOMETHING IN THE CAR If the car is still available simply start another trip to access your item or move the vehicle. Remember to sign out when done. If this process is under a minute you will not be charged. The car is reserved by another member, or otherwise unavailable, please call the customer service number at for assistance. 16. WHAT DO I DO IF I CAN T FIND MY RESERVED CAR? Please call the customer service number at for assistance in locating that specific car, or assistance in finding another nearby. 17. WHEEL CRAMPING Vehicles parked on inclines/hills must have the wheels turned into the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Vehicles parked on a hill with the wheels not pointed towards the curb can be ticketed. 18. HOW CAN I AVOID A CITATION? The best rule of thumb when parking on a public street is to check the posted signage and make sure the vehicle would be safe from a tow or ticket within the next 24 hours. Ask yourself, would I leave my personal vehicle here for the next 24 hours?
