Movie Maker Overview Windows Live Movie Maker is especially created for Windows Vista and Windows 7. This version incorporates a method to retrieve media from a digital camera, import movies, import photos, add music, titles and credits. Most actions can be automated for beginners. The new interface is friendly and intuitive. Once you have perfected your movie it can be uploaded to YouTube or Facebook. Other format options allow you to save to a CD, DVD, or email. Objectives: Create a new movie project Save a movie project Publish a movie Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; 439-8615) 1

1) Add Media Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Live Gallery work together to import, export, upload and modify media from a digital camera. The new movie project can use media stored on the hard drive, external drives or Internet. The list of compatible formats has grown. It is likely that your media will be accepted for import. The process to retrieve media is as follows: Go to the Home Tab, Select the Add Grouping and the Command needed to retrieve media. Add Videos and photos will open the Gallery where you have a collection of images and options to download from your camera or a scanner. Add music takes you to the default music program folder on your computer. Selecting Title will add a slide and text box so you can give your movie a catchy title. Select a photo or movie in the storyboard and select caption, now you can add text directly to the media file. Adding Credits puts a slide with text on the end of your movie. This is a good place to add your name and references to the movie. 2) Edit An imported movie can be split or trimmed by using the Edit Tab on the Ribbon. Use the Preview Window to identify areas to split or trim. Splitting allows the insertion of a still image or text slide Splitting to create sections can be a method to add different music or remove music from sections. Trimming on the other hand is a method to remove a selection. Under the Edit Tab, are the options to change the video volume, background color and duration of slides or still photos. Animations are the effects added to transition between media changes. You can also adjust the duration of the photos. Under the Animation Tab you will find a Pan and Zoom option that can be assigned to individual photos. Visual Effects are effects assigned directly to the media. Options are the ability to filter, brighten or fade a photo. Animations and Visual Effects can be used together. 2

3) AutoMovie This is a quick, easy method to create a movie. Import to the storyboard all the items needed for your movie. Add a sound or song. Create a title and credits. Select auto movie and Movie Maker does the rest. All you have to do is decide what format you want or need for your movie. The best way to do that is to select the option that best fits the plan, such as publishing it to YouTube, Burning it to CD, or emailing it. 4) Save Projects and movies are different. Projects in Movie Maker are the files before being rendered or published as a movie. The projects links to all the media needed to create the final production. While in projects mode all the media being used and edited is still in various locations on your computer. This is why if you save the project file to a disk or to a memory stick to take home you will be surprised to find the images and media are not available for editing. That is because what you see in movie maker projects are links to files. Also, Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; 439-8615) 3

making changes to media in movie maker will not damage or injure the original media. The project is not really shareable until it becomes a movie. 5) Share Movie Maker provides a way to share your movie in many formats. Under the Home Tab, in the Sharing Grouping are options available. Also, as long as you still have your project file you can save the same movie for many different users. Movie Maker, with an add-in makes way for publishing a movie to YouTube or uploading it to Facebook. If you want to create a CD to share with students or family, that option is under the Sharing group drop down menu. Depending on the option you have selected Movie Maker will reduce size or quality as needed to share. Movie Maker common format is.wmv files. Summary Windows Live Movie Maker and Life Gallery are easy to use movie creating software. It has a user friendly interface and an AutoMovie function. With the assistance of a free add-in you now have the ability to publish or upload to YouTube and Facebook.
