Substrate Quality Substrate Preparation The substrate must be clean, dry and free of all contamination such as dirt, oil, grease, coatings etc. which hinder an adhesion. The substrate must be sound and of sufficient strength. If in doubt, apply a test area first. Weak concrete must be removed and surface defects such as blowholes and voids must be fully exposed. All dust, loose and friable material must be completely removed from all surfaces before application of the product, preferably by brush and/or vacuum. Application Conditions / Limitations Substrate Temperature Ambient Temperature Substrate Moisture Content Relative Air Humidity Dew Point +10 C min. / +40 C max. +10 C min. / +40 C max. < 4% pbw moisture content. Test method: Sika -Tramex meter, CM - measurement or Oven-dry-method. No rising moisture according to ASTM (Polyethylene-sheet). 80% r. h. max. Beware of condensation! The substrate and uncured membrane must be at least 3 C above the dew point to reduce the risk of condensation or blooming on the membrane finish. Application Instructions Mixing Mixing Tools Application Method / Tools Cleaning of Tools Potlife Waiting Time / Overcoating Prior to application, stir Sikalastic -450 thoroughly for 3 minutes in order to achieve a homogeneous mix. Over mixing must be avoided to minimise air entrainment. Only for priming a maximum of 15 may be added. Sikalastic -450 must be thoroughly mixed using a low speed electric stirrer (300-400 rpm) or other suitable equipment. By brush: With a thick haired brush. By roller: With a solvent resistant, non-fuzzy roller. By spray: Airless spray equipment, for example: piston pump Wagner EP 3000. (pressure: ~ 200-250 bar, nozzle: 0.38mm - 0.53mm, angle: ca. 50-80 ). On vertical / inclined areas > 4% slope, use 1.5-2.0% Extender T for higher sag resistance. Clean all tools and application equipment with Thinner C immediately after use. Hardened and/or cured material can only be removed mechanically. Sikalastic-450 is designed for fast drying. Therefore the material will cure particularly quickly in high temperatures combined with high air humidity. Skin formation starts after approx. 1 hour (+20 C / 50% r.h.). Before applying Sikalastic -450 or Sikalastic -445 on Sikalastic -450 allow: Substrate temperature Minimum Maximum +10 C +20 C +30 C 36 hours 24 hours 16 hour 1) Assuming that all dirt has been removed and contamination is avoided. After thorough cleaning 1) Sikalastic -450 can be overworked with itself and Sikalastic -445 at any time 3 3/5
Notes on Application / Limitations For optimum application, do not allow liquid Sikalastic -450 to be heated by direct sunlight or other heat sources. Not suitable for permanent water immersion. During the curing process micro bubbles are formed. This is a product characteristic, which does not affect the protective properties. For this reason it should be ensured that the material is not applied at excessive film thicknesses in one layer. Excessive film thickness may create bubbles. The product can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. Work well with a brush in difficult areas. Apply subsequent layers after the first layer has cured tack free. After Sikalastic -450 has been exposed to UV light, it will start to yellow slightly without loosing its physical properties though. We recommend to use Sikalastic -445 as a coloured, UV resistant topcoat for improved aesthetical requirements. Layer thickness of system: approx. 0.6 mm. If necessary, additional coats can be applied. For a layer thickness of 1.5-1.7 mm minimum 6-7 coats are required. The product can be overcoated with itself. In order to cover joints, connections or overlaps of bituminous sheets, use strips of e.g. Sikalastic -120 Fleece to provide additional thickness. Please ask our technical service department for detailed recommendations. The elastic properties are maintained at temperatures down to -20 C and up to +80 C.
