2 The bonded waterproof membrane, which can be verified by non destructive means DENSARE Current technical regulations require buildings and building components exposed to moisture to be protected against penetration of that moisture. This happens through the incorporation of a suitable bonded waterproof system. Mostly these are liquid applied waterproof materials, which once fully cured are overlaid with a wearing finish of ceramic tiles. This type of waterproof membrane has the job of preventing damage to the sub-structure. In accordance with the rules of the profession, two coats of waterproof membrane are to be applied. This is to ensure a defect free waterproof layer, which at the required minimum thickness, guarantees the resulting crack-bridging of the system. Achievement of the minimum thickness of the waterproof membrane laid down in the installation advice supplied by the system manufacturer is of incredible importance. This is especially true with sub-structures exposed to contraction or dynamic loading such as e.g. swimming pool tanks under hydrostatic pressure or with areas exposed to thermal stresses or chemicals in cool rooms, breweries or commercial kitchens. In practice, despite the greatest care during application, there will certainly be unavoidable thickness variations within these waterproofing systems due to application conditions. Up to now, the usual destructive method of checking thickness, e.g. by cutting out a section from the waterproofing layer, made many planners and responsible contractors, quite rightly uneasy. The risk of leaving a weak point in the waterproofing layer, after repair of the test area, is too great. As the first and only supplier, the SCHOMBURG group provides a liquid applied waterproofing system DENSARE -2002, which offers a quantum leap regarding security and quality assurance with the aid of a non-destructive electrical test method. Through the application of a graphite containing conductive lacquer, which is laid out in a 10 x 10 m grid with copper strips, the installed waterproofing layer ASOFLEX -AKB can be electrically checked to DIN

3 What differentiates DENSARE from a conventional class C bonded waterproofing system*? Testing is carried out under a voltage, the strength of which relates to the nominal thickness of the coating under test. Before starting the test, the earth terminal of the testing equipment is connected to the copper strip of the ASO -conductive strip, which is integrated within the electrically conductive ASODUR - V115W in a 10 x 10 m grid. The surface of the coating is brushed with the flush surface mounted high voltage electrode of the equipment searching for pores. Here thickness less than the required level, air pockets, pores and cracks are detected through spark discharges and a simultaneous acoustic signal. The questionable areas are marked and can subsequently be repaired with the waterproofing material, before tiles are installed. The approved ASOFLEX -AKB waterproofing system is merely supplemented with a graphite lacquer boosted with conductive strips to produce a non-destructive verifiable system. With this additional configuration, the DENSARE system gains additional attributes compared with conventional class C systems it is possible to nondestructively assess the entire waterproof layer which offers the contractor considerably more assurances. The 14 day pool tank test with chlorinated water for swimming pools, demanded by the ZDB technical sheet Swimming pool construction is not needed. With DENSARE -2002, it is possible for the contractor or TÜV to efficiently and assuredly test for class C bonded waterproof systems. At an acceptable test speed of 40 cm/sec, the time consumed to carry out the spark induction test is kept within tight limits. The requirements regarding substrates reference age, residual moisture and tensile adhesion strength and the type of preparation measures are no different for DENSARE than for conventional waterproofing systems. DENSARE permits the non-destructive assessment of the entire area coated with heavy duty waterproofing systems and offers assurances against defective areas in coatings.
