Word Work Unit 4 Grade Level: Fourth Timeframe: 5 weeks Unit Overview: This unit of focuses on word knowledge which supports reading and transfers to writing. The reading skills include phonics, word structure, word recognition, word meaning, and vocabulary development. Strengthening these skills will transfer to better writing skills that include spelling, vocabulary, usage and syntax, and conventions. This unit focuses on recognizing syllabication patterns and the utilization of this understanding to decode unfamiliar It is important to understand that 30 minutes of time is allotted daily for explicit phonics and word work instruction. Specific routines are also established for the use of to help students begin to explore words by examining and interacting with them in a variety of sorting activities. Throughout the unit the teacher should model the activity (I Do), students should try the activity as a class (We Do), and students are then released to complete an activity independently (You Do). The Word Study Units outlined in Journeys follow a routine pattern of activities: Day 1 perform word sorts based on patterns or sounds within the Day 2 participate in one of the following word activities: Pattern Sort, Repeating the Sort, or Guess My Category. Day 3 participate in one of the following word activities: Word Hunt, Blind Writing Sort, Pattern Sort, or Buddy Sort. Day 4 participate in one of the following word activities: Word Hunt, Buddy Sort, Open Sort, or Guess My Category. Day 5 Teachers will assess students understanding of the Essential Questions Enduring Understanding Knowledge of phonics leads to improved reading and writing with better accuracy, decoding, spelling and reading comprehension. Developing and applying phonics and word analysis skills to decode words with automaticity will help me better comprehend text. Essential Questions How can syllable patterns help me read new words?
