Lesson 1: Students will experiment with and discover personal choice for preparing clay through the methods of kneading and wedging. Lesson 2: Define terms: ceramic, plastic, glaze, slip, and kiln. Define and attribute element of design to the art form of ancient pottery. Lesson 3: Students will describe the clay and the process the Egyptians used for their vessels. Lesson 4: Students will prepare clay and practice coil construction. Lesson 5: Students will create multiple clay vessels employing the coil method of construction. Lesson 6: Students will define principle of contrast and identify its use in Classical Greek vases. Lesson 7: Students will contrast the narratives found on vessels from the Classical Greek period with the Moche Indians of Peru and the Mayans. Define and compare how parts of a pot correspond to the human body. Comprehension of kiln operations. Execute a functional piece of pottery. Research Red Figure Greek pottery, when it was invented and the significance of the scenes recorded on the vases of the life and culture of Ancient Greece. Complete nine clay pieces from coil construction, slab and wheel thrown. Select piece for mid-term Lesson 1: Students will demonstrate understanding of decorative techniques and terms of wax resist, stamping, slip, trailing, and sgraffito. Lesson 2: Students will define and compare how parts of a pot correspond to the human body. GT Modifications: Subject Ceramics II Calendar: 3 rd 9 weeks Timeframe: Level: Secondary Utilize steps in aesthetic scanning to make a visual inventory of a ceramic piece. Identify traits of form and shape, line, color, space and texture. Create cylindrical and box vessels using the stiff slab method of construction. Utilize steps in aesthetic scanning to make a visual inventory of a ceramic piece. Identify traits of balance, unity, emphasis and pattern Utilize soft slab method and include feet. Create surface tension and incorporate a geometric shape. Lesson 1: Students will utilize steps in aesthetic scanning to create a visual inventory, describe impressions, and sensory qualities relating to elements of design. Lesson 2: Students will create cylindrical and box shaped vessels using the stiff slab method of construction, adding relief to the surface of one piece. Lesson 3: Students will utilize steps in aesthetic scanning to create a visual inventory, expressive qualities of mood, tension and ideals, and technical qualities relating to how the work is created. Lesson 4: Students will identify traits of balance, unity, emphasis and pattern within selected works of Barbara Grygutis. Lesson 5: Students will create ceramic pieces utilizing the soft slab method and incorporate feet. TA GT Modifications: Subject Ceramics II Calendar: 4 th 9 wks Timeframe: Level: Secondary Research Casa Grandes Pottery and deliver an oral presentation. Identify techniques for using color and texture in surface decoration. Describe the history of blue and white ware and its impact on the arts. Demonstrate the successful use of tools, colorants and glazes. Design original surface decoration for ceramic ware. Lesson 1: Students will research and give an oral presentation over the Casa Grandes pottery. Lesson 2: Students will make a slab plate and decorate it in the style of Chinese blue and white ware. Lesson 3: Students will research the origin of glazes and the earliest glazes used by the Egyptians and demonstrate the successful use of tools, colorants and glazes. Lesson 4: Students will research the plants and minerals used by Native Americans to decorate pottery. Lesson 5: Students will design original surface decoration for ceramic ware.
