PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to update the dental provider on current concepts in the non-surgical and surgical management of dental caries. Dr. Donly will provide a review of the most current techniques for prevention, diagnosis, and management of enamel demineralization. He will also review a wide range of restorative materials and techniques, including risk assessment utilization in decision-making, based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry s Symposium on Pediatric Restorative Dentistry. At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to: Be exposed to early diagnosis of enamel demineralization and understand preventive regimens available, as well as appropriate intervention with these agents, using minimally invasive techniques; Discuss pediatric dentistry standards of care using risk assessment in decision-making; Discuss the newer commercially available resin-based composites and dentin bonding resins; and understand their mechanism of action and visualize clinical utilization of these materials; Recognize the clinical utilization of traditional, photopolymerized glass ionomer cements and compomers, including indications and contraindications; Discuss the use of stainless steel crowns and zirconia crowns including indications, contraindications, preparation techniques and cementing agents. GUEST FACULTY Kevin Donly, DDS, MS, Professor and Chair in the Department of Developmental Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Previous positions include Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Clinical Studies at the University of Iowa, Associate Professor, Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston and Associate Professor, The University of Texas Medical School. He received his DDS in 1984, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1986, and MS in 1986 from the University of Iowa. Dr. Donly is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, formerly on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Board of Directors for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, is the previous Chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Post-doctoral Education, Past-President of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and past Chair of the Public Information Committee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served as the Pediatric Dentistry Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. He has published over 350 chapters, manuscripts and abstracts associated with pediatric dentlstry, dental restorative materials research and clinical utilization. AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY FACULTY Steven M. Adair, DDS, Course Director, received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina, and his Master s degree and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Iowa. He is Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and has served on numerous national committees and editorial positions. Adair is currently president of Palmetto Dental Consulting LLC and serves as Senior Clinical Affairs Advisor for the DentaQuest Care Group.
