MASTERPLAN RH ARKITEKTER OKTOBER 2014
WHO WE ARE 02 RH ARKITEKTER is dedicated to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, education and health care. We are experts in the design of clean rooms classified by GMP / ISO standard, and we have amongst others worked with Novo Nordisk, Biogen Idec, Bavarian Nordic, Leo Pharma, Lundbeck and Novozymes. Since our foundation in 2001, we have been developing solutions for large international life science companies and institutions in the design of laboratories, production facilities, clean rooms, pilot plants, medical centers, hospitals, teaching - and university facilities both in Denmark and internationally. With bright and inspiring architecture in the Nordic tradition, we create the optimal conditions for effective, inspiring and safe working and production environments.
CONTENT 03 RH ARKITEKTER has experience with design of manufacturing, laboratory and office buildings in scale from the macro programming to master planning, space management and building design, room optimization and interior expression. Recently we have developed master plans for both Novo Nordisk and Leo Pharma. Most of our projects around overall programming and master planning are confidential. Therefore this presentation is primarily a visual tour of our methodology on all the different levels. 01 MACRO / Analysis and Programming page 04 02 Site / Master Plan page 07 02 BUILDING page 10 02 ROOMS page 13 02 FURNITURE page 17 We use a systematic and analytic approach to our projects. For some, we have developed software applications in order to rationalize the project execution and also provide an improved overview. The software applications are an integral part of our methodology. On the following pages you will also find a description of the contents of each phase. Each phase will contain a presentation of the tools that are used and also examples and case stories of projects where we have used them.
01 MACRO / Analysis and Programming 04 : Location - In order to find the right site, the customer must balance the need for educated employees with attractive price, water supply and great infrastructure as well as other key parameters. : Capacity - Together with the customer we will analyze and determine the need for space e.g. growth in the number of research scientists per year. This is converted to the needed square meters per year for laboratories and support facilities (cooling, storage, gowning etc.) : Organization - Analysis of departments or sections that will collaborate now and in the future, and hence need to be located near each other : Workflow - Analysis of current and future workflow, automation degree and work environment : Branding - Understand what the customer wants to project in terms of corporate branding, and how that is expressed through the building in the architecture as well as the interior design.
01 MACRO / Analysis and Programming 05 RH ARKITEKTER has developed a software tool for the Danish Property Agency which is a part of the Climate, Energy and Building Ministry. The tool was originally used to register current layout and future programming of universities. www.unilab.dk UNILAB focuses on three work areas: : Registration of current building mass and layout : Planning of future building layout : Idea catalogue In addition to this RH ARKITEKTER has developed another tool (KK Planner) for the Copenhagen Municipality to develop environmentally friendly design. In this tool it is possible to map the environmental impact for building projects, set targets and search for inspiration on how to diminish the impact.
01 MACRO / Analysis and Programming 06 Together with engineering partners RH ARKITEK- TER has been in charge of programming and planning most of the newer large Danish university building projects. The customer is the Danish Science Ministry. Here s a few project examples: : BIOVAF, DTU Life Science + Bioengineering, Technical University of Denmark : Niels Bohr Science Park, University of Copenhagen : Extension of the Panum complex, University of Copenhagen : Faculty of Health Sciences, Research facilities to the Institute for Biomedicine, Aarhus University, : New research building, Roskilde University
02 SITE / MASTERPLAN 07 A master plan must ensure an optimal coherence between functions and buildings that must be tied together in a logical infrastructure. : Greenfields must be analyzed in order to take future use and authority requirements into account : Current site usage must be analyzed in the same way, and the current building mass must be registered and their usability evaluated : New generic building types are developed and should be placed or bound together with the current buildings in an optimal and harmonic structure : Phased development plans are developed : The need for surrounding facilities is calculated (x m2 of this laboratory category will require y number of canteens, auditoriums, parking space etc.)
02 SITE / MASTERPLAN 08 RH ARKITEKTER has developed an interactive building portfolio management tool for Leo Pharma. The master plan is the foundation of the tool. By a simple click on a building the tool can tell you what projects are ongoing, who the project manager is and other information like budget and schedule. In this way it is easy to get an overview of all the ongoing projects on the site and see the impact on economy and schedule if a project is postponed or accelerated. Furthermore RH ARKITEKTER has developed a tool for Novo Nordisk that is used when the registration of buildings has been completed. The Vision Lab Planner tool is used to illustrate where the different departments are located, the number of square meters they occupy. It is easy to see where different categories of laboratories and common areas are localized. Vision Lab Planner can be used for initial planning as well as for relocation planning.
02 SITE / MASTERPLAN 09 In 2013 RH ARKITEKTER completed the master plan for Novo Nordisk research facility center in Måløv, Denmark. We have been involved in the vast majority of the current laboratory buildings on site. Currently there are around 2,000 research scientists working on a daily basis on the site. The master plan was updated to make room for further 3,000 scientists. The first stage will be to build 15,000 m2 chemistry and analysis laboratories. This stage is also designed by RH ARKITEKTER and is currently under construction. Another example of a master plan is the one RH ARKITEKTER has completed for the Leo Pharma site in Ballerup, Denmark. This site also contains research and development, commercial manufacturing and administration buildings. RH ARKITEKTER has been the architects behind a multitude of different projects on the site including laboratories, GMP manufacturing, headquarter for the top management, canteen etc.
03 BUILDING 10 As change is continuous, RH ARKITEKTER develops a generic building layout with the customer. This will minimize the impact of changes and relocation later on, as it will be easy to convert offices to laboratories. When the master plan consists of predesigned generic building types the road from decision to realization is very short. In a world of change, time is always a critical factor when developing a new facility. This is why we have developed a concept for prefabricated laboratories. The building modules are the size of a typical room. Each module will be manufactured in a factory, where it will be fully furnished, with all installations in place. This way it is easy to ensure a great work environment for the construction personnel, and a way to minimize the safety hazards that typically are great concerns during traditional construction projects. The building modules are transported on special carriers directly to the construction site, where they are installed and ready for use. In order to align the architecture with the other buildings on site, a façade can be designed as a part of the module or later mounted on the site.
03 BUILDING 11 For the Novo Nordisk site in Måløv we have developed a generic building type we call DUPLO. Within the same building geometry the DUPLPO can be fitted with a series of different laboratory types or offices. The master plan for Site Måløv is a series of DUPLO buildings, that are combined by connecting buildings containing special functions like canteens, auditoriums, meeting facilities, administration, receptions etc. For the planning of the pre-fabricated laboratory modules RH ARKITEKTER has developed another web based tool where buildings and rooms are itemized and then put into the virtual shopping basket. www.modulab.dk
03 BUILDING 12 Here are some examples where we have used one or more of the different tools and systems. Novo Nordisk Building E5 / F5. 8.000 m2 laboratories, animal houses and offices. Generic builing design was applied as this is a part of the strategy for the Master Plan in Måløv. Novo Nordisk Building B7 3.400 m2 analysis laboratories on site Måløv. The building consists of prefabricated building modules with a brick façade to match architecture the other buildings on the site. Lundbeck 4.900 m2 multi flexible administration offices in Valby. Leo Pharma 3.000 m2offices for the corporate management aligned with the master plan for the Ballerup site.
04 ROOMS 13 The generic building is designed with a room layout that is divided by function into categories. Afterwards the needed number of workspaces, equipment and supporting functions is calculated based on customer key numbers as well as our experience. This also goes for the number of meeting rooms, rest rooms etc. For each room it is the function and workflow within it that will determine the type of building module. Then room layout is determined by the workflow between the different rooms. RH ARKITEKTER is committed to ensuring a great work environment in laboratories and offices. Ergonomics, day light, artificial lighting and aesthetic design can ensure a great work environment, and international studies has proven that it has a positive long term effect on the employee s physical and psychological health.
04 THE ROOM 14 In order to facilitate the configuration of each laboratory RH ARKITEKTER has developed Vivid. It is an interactive tool, where each room in the generic building can be configured. It is possible to work with both furniture and installations all the way from the overall building level to a room level. All data is registered and can generate a list of furniture and installations. It is also a 3D visualization tool, in which the user in collaboration with the architect can pre-determine the guiding principles for the furnishing in each laboratory category.

05 FURNITURE 17 RH ARKITEKTER recommends furniture with these key characteristics: : Flexible modules that are easy to move around or exchange different elements of. : Easy access to installations, also to adding new installations : Great work environment. Possibilities of mechanically adjusting the height of tables and other work stations. Integrating work light under cupboards or in the installation bridge. Acoustic panels to reduce noise. Transparency in order to ensure overview and daily collaboration. : A safe place to work, with surfaces that are easy to clean and joint that can be GMO approved. : An aesthetical design. A laboratory in use contains a lot of equipment. A simplistic furniture design with a clean and aesthetically pleasing visual expression creates a calm ambience and hence a good work environment.
05 FURNITURE 18 The Vivid planning tool, developed by RH ARKITEKTER, is used on the building, room and furniture level. All the furnishings can be configured in detail with all installations, surface requirements, elevation functions etc. The architect places the furnishings in close collaboration with the user. Each room is shown in 3D to provide the user with a better idea of what the room will look when it is build. This has proven to avoid unpleasant misunderstandings that otherwise are not discovered until the room is taken into use. Furthermore Vivid automatically generates configuration item lists, which can be used to calculate the price.
05 FURNITURE 19 Type A - High transparency: High portal with cupboards hanging underneath RH ARKITEKTER has designed a new laboratory system called VisionLab in close collaboration with Labflex. The concept is high standards for ergonomics, flexibility, accessibility to installations and clean ability. The cupboards are hung from an installation bridge, and the doors are made of glass in order to ensure as much transparency as possible in the room. The cupboards can be replaced by shelves or removed completely from the bridge to create space for equipment. Type B - Medium transparency: Low portal with cupboards standing on top Lighting is installed in the bottom of the cupboards and also in the installation bridge. The dynamic light can be controlled per work module in order to suit the individual user or work operation. VisionLab is a well thought laboratory system that combines functionality with aesthetics and is compliant with regulatory GMO requirements. Type C - Lower transparency: Low portal with cupboards and all installations
