Have students say the sound aloud as they write the letters with their index fingers on the table in front of them. 5. Review all sounds by holding up the flash cards one at a time. Use the I ll say, We ll say, You ll Say method. Tell students, I ll say the sound first on my own. Listen carefully to the sound. Now we ll say the sound together. Then you say the sound on your own. Construct Words 1. Pass out Word Construction Tiles to each student. You will need the letters: i, m, o, w, f, h, k, p, a, s, t, j, ss, ll, ff, zz 2. So, instead of hearing both of them make the s sound, Suzie is the only one who speaks. Sarah stands next to Suzie, but she doesn t make a sound. Phoneme Boxes Have students line up 3 laminated 2 x 2 construction paper squares (different colors) near the top of their desks. Say the word, kiss aloud slowly. Students repeat the word, kiss. Have students pull down each sound they hear as they say the sounds/phonemes aloud. Ask students how many sounds they hear in the word, kiss. [There are three phonemes: /k/, /i/, and /s/] Please Note: Phonemes are the smallest parts of sound in spoken language. The English language has about 41 phonemes. Phonemes can be individual letters or combinations of letters. For this lesson, the double consonants make only one sound. The phoneme for the double consonant ss, for example, is /s/. Have students move the colored paper squares back to the top of their desks and repeat the steps above with these words, by saying: Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, miss Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, fill Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, off Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, jazz Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, mill Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, pass Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, hill Pull down the sounds you hear in the word, doll [There are three phonemes: /m/, /i/, and /s/] [There are three phonemes: /f/, /i/, and /l/] [There are two phonemes: /o/, and /f/] [There are three phonemes: /j/, /a/, and /z/] [There are three phonemes: /m/, /i/, and /l/] [There are three phonemes: /p/, /a/, and /s/] [There are three phonemes: /h/, /i/, and /l/] [There are three phonemes: /d/, /o/, and /l/] Phonics Instruction Guide Unit #9 2007 Danco Phonics Readers
