Carpathia School News Principal s Message Dear Families, I am hoping as you receive this newsletter that the snow has melted and spring has arrived. I hope that everyone had a safe and happy Spring Break! Congratulations to our students for working hard on their persuasive writing for the contest last month. There were many good submissions and the teachers had a difficult time choosing the writing that best fit the criteria as their works was so well done! We are looking forward to Mr. Michael ManyEagles coming to work with our K-6 students in mid-april. He will be sharing aboriginal artifacts, stories and soap stone carving. He has even offered to run a parent workshop one evening hopefully in June for interested parents! The date will be in June s newsletter. Congratulations also goes out to our students in Grade 5 & 6 that worked on their science fair projects. We have 3 students participating in the divisional science fair this month. Thank you to all the classroom teachers, students and families who are following us on Instagram and Twitter. In addition, please don t forget to check your child s Seesaw account to keep in touch with what they are learning at school. It is a wonderful way to communicate with our families. Thank you for everyone that turned out to Student Led Conferences last month as you supported your child and their learning. We are still accepting applications for our Nursery & Kindergarten program in the office. Please see Katie in the office for the forms and requirements. The earlier you apply the better so you can choose morning or afternoon classes! Hopefully the April showers bring May flowers! Ms. S. Locking of Doors For student and staff safety, the only door that will be consistently unlocked is the main door. According to the Safe School Charter, we need a procedure for controlling visitor access to the school site. It is recommended that only one main door be unlocked. Therefore the other doors in the school will not be unlocked regularly. This is for the safety of your children and the staff of the school that we can see people coming in and out of the building. We realize it may inconvenient to walk further, but safety is the main concern. In addition, if there is a lockdown or hold and secure, we would have dif;iculties making it to every door to lock to prevent an intruder from getting into the school. There have been incidences of students running into the school after 5pm and roaming the hallways when the daycare and teachers are working and other schools have had computers stolen. We are sorry that the door locking is inconvenient, but safety is our ;irst concern. Dropping off your children if you are dropping them off after 8:55am please remember you must use the FRONT door of the school. All other doors are locked at the 8:55am bell. Please DO NOT use the staff parking lot to stop in or park in when dropping off. The City of Winnipeg also enforces the No Parking in front of the dumpster rule. It is clearly marked that you cannot stop OR park in front of the dumpster in the parking lot. If you must use the parking lot, please use the last 3 stalls on the far end of the parking lot and NOT the first 6 stalls by the dumpsters. Supervision of students does not start until 8:45. If students wish to eat in breakfast program they may come at 8:30. Otherwise there is no one to watch the students. Please do not send them earlier! There is no supervision until 8:45. Please pick up your children at 3:30 each day. If an emergency arises, the office is open until 4:00pm but you will need to call to inform us and it cannot be a regular occurrence. Students using the phone in the office is permitted for emergencies only. We always encourage students to make after-school arrangements ahead of time, such as for Boys and Girls Club! These arrangements should be made either before they come to school in the morning or the night before. We do not allow phone use for students to call home and ask their parents if they can hang out with their friends after school or if they need to ask something of a non-urgent matter. If phone use becomes an issue with your child, they will not be permitted to use the phone and office staff will have to call home for them instead in the case of a real emergency. If you are wanting to order your child(ren) s Spring Photo s from Lifetouch, please submit your orders and money to the school of6ice by 3:30pm on Friday April 5th, or order online via credit card. Photo samples and ordering instructions were sent home on March 19th&20th.

Attendance letters will be sent home at the end of every month for those students who have missed 3 or more days in the month. Please note this will also include excused absences such as illnesses or appointments during the month. If your childs absences are in excess of 3 days per month without verification, we may be contacting the school s Truancy officer to make a visit to your home. Late Slips - if you are arriving late for school, please stop by the School Office to pick up your Late Slip. Late slips are also required for Nursery and Kindergarten students. Correct attendance records are very important for the safety of your child. Student Absence Reminder - please call the SafeArrival system before 9:00am for your child s absence. The system calls out at 9:20 AM and 1:20 PM. It will also call if your child arrived late after those times. Thank you to those families that have been using the Safe Arrival system to report absences. Grade 6 Babysitting Course We will be offering a babysitting course for any students currently in Grade 6 during the day on April 26th. This is a NO SCHOOL day for the rest of the school, and for any Grade 6 student who is NOT attending the babysitting course. The cost to families is $15 per student. The course is being partially funded by the Carpathia Parent Council and the amount is capped at 20 students. Registration forms and information went home at the end of March. Registration for the course is on a first come-first served basis. To secure your child s spot, you must pay the fee and fill out the information sheet as soon as possible. You can pay your child s classroom teacher, or the office directly. We will be opening spots to Grade 5 students after April 5th if there is availability.

Michael Many Eagles will be at Carpathia School the week of April 15th to do soapstone carving with students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Students will participate in two sessions one hour long where they will hear aboriginal stories, touch and feel aboriginal artifacts, as well as carve in soapstone. We are looking forward to his visit! Students have access to use a math program at home. This program is called Dreambox and is based on the Manitoba math curriculum. Students are familiar with it as they play it often in their classrooms. It is a fun animated math learning game recommended by our school division. It would be bene;icial for students to use this program at home during the school year. Writing Contest In March students participated in a writing contest. This contest was sponsored by a donation from a community member who wanted to instill excitement and a love for writing in students. Thank you very much to the anonymous community member for this donation as it enabled us to give out $55 cheques to one student in each classroom at Carpathia School! Many students were excited about writing and could be seen practicing in the their free time for the contest! In each classroom, students had to choose the best student s work based on the writing continuum for their grade and the names were hidden. Congratulations to Jimmy, Sasha, Joseph, Alisa, Sebastian, Santiago P, Maryna, Casey and Alexis! Your parent/guardian can sign for your $55 prize cheque in the of;ice after April 1st.

Hello Parents/Guardian, We would like to welcome you to our next PAC meeting! We are always looking for new members! We have a space on a bulletin board near the front of;ice to post PAC meetings, announcements and events. Many of you may have walked by it and noticed that we recently voted in our president (Angelique Baumann) and vice-president (Harmoni Hoffman) for the 2018/2019 school year. I am sad to say that both Angelique and I will be moving on next year, and this will leave the school without any dedicated PAC members. We have now held 4 meetings, with some parents coming to a meeting, but not returning for another. If we do not have any new members commit to next years school year, there will unfortunately not be a PAC next year. This will mean no pizza lunches, no fundraising for the school, and no subsidized ;ield trips. It is not a lot of work, and If anyone would like more information, please come to our next meeting, on Monday April 22nd at 6:00pm in the library, we would be happy to answer any questions. As you may or may not know, the lunch program is run out of the school by the PAC. Jenny Jeffers graciously took on the position of lunch program co-ordinator so this program could be kept running as for the past few years the PAC has been short on members. This year has been a challenging year collecting funds from families and making the payments to the lunch supervisors and having to enforce non-payment or students who are not abiding the rules of the program. This program is a not-for-pro;it program. It is not run by the school; however, spillover has occurred due to these issues, with the of;ice often dealing with the behaviour issues for us or calling home on the lunch program s behalf. We are writing to let the families know that next year there will be an increase in fees to afford to hire more staff. Additionally, any accounts that are not paid in full by the end of this school year, will not be invited to apply for the program next year. There will also be a no tolerance policy put in place in regards to defaulting on payments, and to keep the program a safe space for both the students and staff. Keep in mind, the lunch program is not run by the school, or the responsibility of the school to discipline. The lunch program is provided to you by the PAC. I hope to see you at our next meeting. Thank you, Harmoni Hoffman PAC Vice-President To make a payment for lunch program please see Katie in the school office between 8:00am- 4:00pm. We accept cash, cheque, credit card or e-transfer. We DO NOT accept debit.

Grade 5 & 6 Basketball club will start on Tuesday April 2nd and run until April 25th. The club will go on every Tuesday & Thursday for the month of April, beginning at 12:25 after students have eaten lunch. Letters went home before spring break. Our School will be taking part in the Heart and Stroke Foundation s Jump Rope for Heart Program. All Students in grades 1-6 will attend an assembly for a special presentation in the gymnasium on Thursday, April 4. The presentation will start at 2:45 and highlight healthy eating, heart and stroke awareness and the importance of an active lifestyle through jump rope. Students will also learn how they can support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Looking forward, Running Club will begin in May and will be open to all Grade 4-6 students. The objective of Running Club is to help students learn how to run, to enjoy the fresh air, to be active and to have fun. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in the Divisional Fit Run competition which will take place in early June. Congratulations to Natalia & Lorely who participated in PTE Quantum art gallery classes every Tuesday and Thursday since January. They performed in a ;inal concert on March 14 th at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and did a fabulous job on some musical numbers!

February was a very busy month for the Grade 5 s and 6 s! We spent much of our time working on our Science Fair which was the ;irst one Carpathia School has had in many years. Each student worked independently on a project of their own choosing. We had so many wonderful projects and the students did their best to follow the scienti;ic process and test something. We had projects about Slime, Balloon Powered cars, catapults, bubbles, Traf;ic gloves, crystals, water density, and how your mind works. I am happy to say that many of the students did a great job and showed very well. Each project was judged and three winners were chosen to represent Carpathia school at the Divisional Science Fair on April 10 th, 2019. The Carpathia Science Project winners were Macayla, Kylie and Abagail. Congratulations and best of luck at the divisional Science Fair!

April showers bring May ;lowers April is usually a month that has a lot of rain and that water is very important in a lot of different ways. Did you know that your body weight is approximately 60% water? Our body uses water in all its cells, organs and tissues to help regulate it s temperature. In addition, water helps protect the spinal cord and acts as a lubricant and cushion for joints. It also helps remove waste from our bodies and aides in digestion Water is also important to plants and animals. It helps plants grow, which give us food. Essentially water gives us, and all living things life. We need water for our Earth! About 71 percent of the earth s surface is water-covered and the ocens hold about 96.5% of all of earths water. April 22nd is Earth Day. It is a day to help people to learn about protecting and caring for our environment, our species and especially our planet Earth. I encourage everyone on this day to take a walk, enjoy the sunshine and jump in some puddles (depending on the weather!) Please help to take care of each other and our planet. Be thankful for all the earth has provided. -Ms. Chambers A big thank you to the Tshibamba family for providing the Breakfast Club with all the yummy food!

Things are becoming nice outside, but February was another tough month when it comes to the cold weather. Each of our patrols have persevered this winter, making a strong effort to be on post regularly and on time. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we did have some days where it was just too cold to be on post and we did cold weather crossing which means we walked students out quickly and came back in. I am happy to announce that our patrol of the month is Areka! Congratulations Areka! March Patrol of the Month

Shared by Ms. Bell; Developing Mindful Breathing to Regain Calmness Calming Breathing Exercise for Kids http:// www.pbs.org/parents/adventures-in-learning/2015/09/calming-breathing-exercise-for-kids/ This Adventure in Learning activity is for when the adventure gets to be too much. It s an exercise for slowing down and tuning into our own bodies and awareness. Today, we re going to learn about Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing. It s a great calming breathing exercise for kids. What is Belly Breathing? Diaphragmatic or belly breathing is a natural to all mammals. In fact, we mammals are the only animals in the world to do it. It s a state of deep breathing that s controlled by a large muscle in our abdomen called the diaphragm. When you take air in through your nose, it travels into your lungs. If you take a shallow breath, only the chest cavity expands. But when you breathe in deeply, the diaphragm contracts and the belly and chest cavity expand. Why it CALMS you down? Ever told someone who was speaking super fast or through rivers of tears, Okay, take a deep breath? Why do we turn to breath first? It s instinct. Breathing deeply into our bellies is what our bodies do when we re in a state of total relaxation. Belly breathing and the fight or flight response to stress or anxiety (two feelings we all experience) are mutually exclusive, meaning they can t occur together at the same time. When our bodies switch into fight or flight mode, we engage in shallow breathing. We re ready for battle. On the other hand, belly breathing reduces our heart rate and triggers a relaxation response. It slows us down. Let s BREATHE! Continued on the next page...

Start by having your child breathe normally. Ask them if they notice anything about it. What parts of their body move as they breathe? What does it feel like? Now have them lie on their backs and place their hands on their bellies. With their mouths closed, have them breathe in for four seconds or until they feel their whole chest fill with air all the way down to their belly. Have them hold in the air for four seconds. Then have them slowly blow all the air out until it s all gone. Repeat until the body feels relaxed. Tips Kids as young as three can practice belly breathing. If your child is having difficulty breathing slowly, have him or her exhale through a straw. You can tell them to pretend they re snorkeling. It s important to have kids first practice when they are in a relaxed state. Once they have the feel of belly breathing mastered (have them practice it daily), then they can apply it to when they re feeling stressed. It s hard to have a kid calm down if they don t know what calm feels like, or, they don t have a well-rehearsed strategy already in place. It s great to practice belly breathing at bedtime. It can help kids who have trouble falling asleep. And it s something they can control on their own. Go ahead and practice with your kids. After all, parenting is stressful. You deserve some relaxation vibes too. Shared by Ms. Bell; Developing Mindful Breathing to Regain Calmness
